safe: I . i., ffarzariug ,Mn Hoyt Kyra! . . A beautiful life is made through service and in helping others. Such is the life of Hoyt Byrd, Sweetwater High School Diversified Occupations instructor. During his six years at Newman High School, his work has been to place students enrolled in the D. O. classes on jobs according to their various interests and to train them for jobs in the future. In so doing, he has helped numerous students choose their life's vocation. Under his sponsorship, the D. O. chapter of the Vocational Industrial Club has won an array of honors, including the V.I.C. district contest held in Abilene. Mr. Byrd does not confine his interests and talents to D. O. alone. He has used his mathe- matical ability to good advantage, also, and several years, under his guidance, S.H.S. has won t-he district and regional slide rule contests in the Inter- scholastic League meets. The dedicatee is an active member of the Pres- byterian Church, the Lions Club, and a participant in civic affairs. Because of his interest in and guidance of stu- dents, much of which may be classified as beyond the call of duty, the staff dedicates the 1957 Yucca Gloriosa to Mr. Byrd. 5
