Such is the life of Hoyt Byrd, Sweetwater High School Diversified Occupations instructor. During his six years at Newman High School, his work has been to place students enrolled in the D. O. classes on jobs according to their various interests and to train them for jobs in the future. In so doing, he has helped numerous students choose their life's vocation. Under his sponsorship, the D. O. chapter of the Vocational Industrial Club has won an array of honors, including the V.I.C. district contest held in Abilene. Mr. Byrd does not confine his interests and talents to D. O. alone. He has used his mathe- matical ability to good advantage, also, and several years, under his guidance, S.H.S. has won t-he district and regional slide rule contests in the Inter- scholastic League meets. The dedicatee is an active member of the Pres- byterian Church, the Lions Club, and a participant in civic affairs. Because of his interest in and guidance of stu- dents, much of which may be classified as beyond the call of duty, the staff dedicates the 1957 Yucca Gloriosa to Mr. Byrd. 5 F1 Y . w V Q Y 8 . , 5 3' Aff K1 5 4, Hi 5- pk , lygzv 3 1. Yuccas, cactus, six beautiful girls, and Newman High School's Little Red, mascot of the Mus- tang students, supply the scenery in this case. Although West Texas rain makes its appearance more often than does the moist type, we don't have to travel far to find a hue of green and harmonizing colors. Beauty galore is here-yes, and all about us if we but seek it. i , h,,,,u,.v 1? ff 3Wqg'-Mx'1ff 'xA H., W- .M -.r -J M, A - ff' 1 I ww wi 'gf' is 5 'fa A s : - , 3' ,, ay? G. SAVAGE MELVIN ROBERTSON 61515555 Beauty of life is expressed in a student who is well-rounded in school activities. More than 730 students in New- man High School. Each student has an equal chance to a well-rounded schedule of academic and extra sub- jects. The students have studied Eng- lish, Spanish, mathematics, homemak- ing, vocational subjects, music, and religion, to name a few. To graduate from this school, a student must have 16 academic credits and non-academic credits. Graduates may look back on the years in high school as the most beautiful years of their lives. They have had an opportunity to take part in numerous colorful and joyful events. As seniors complete their last year and start concentrating on the future, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen should also concentrate on their last years in high school, trying to make them the best and beautiful yearsf' II 7 only the educated are free' . . .
