The words of George Linnaeous Banks well depicts the life's work of our 1956 dedicatee, Annie Clare Vinson. As a way of saying thank you for school, civic and social work, the 1956 Yucca Gloriosa staff takes pride in dedi- cating this publication to Mrs. Vinson. IN THE PINK . . . This may well describe the setting of the backyard garden of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Vinson. The garden has served as a Worthwhile pastime and hobby for the Vinson family as well as being the site of numerous local social occurrences. The early bird head executive also served as Newman High School principal before becoming superintendent and can be found in his office early in the morning mapping out plans for improve- ment of Sweetwaterls educational system. Under Mr. Southis leader- ship, a large building program for Sweetwater school is underway. During the 1955-1956 school year, students moved into two new school buildings in Sweetwater-at New- man High and at P. Cowan Ele- mentary School. Mr. South, a member of the First Methodist Church and the Rotary Club, also holds membership in sev- eral other civic organizations, and is well known as a conscientious civic leader. ' eaatilope ' TYPING, FILING, AND GENERAL OF- FICE WORK are among the duties of Mrs. Caffey Welch, secretary to Superintendent Olaf G. South. Mrs. Welch serves the en- tire school staff, along with filling the sec- retarial position for Mr. South. A part of her duties is figuring and writing faculty and staff pay checks. The men, elected by local taxpaying citi- zens, represent several businesses and pro- fessions and have a good educational back- ground. With Superintendent South, the Board of Trustees has as its goal more and better schools and educational opportunities for the community's children. President of the Board this year is Wade Forester, elected by other trustees. C. E. Lambert is secretary. Other members are Hudson Lincoln, J. M. Lawrence, Dr. june Young, Kirby Kinsey, and Dr. A. N. Mrs. Billy Savage, secretary to the prin- cipal, does a part of her daily work, as she prepares a new schedule file. Mrs. Savage sells cafeteria tickets, keeps of- fice files, and advises student helpers ay part of her daily routine. B I0 K Wikia? li WX During this school term, Prin- cipal john White completes his second year as Sweetwater High School's' administration leader. Mr. White's sincere efforts and efficient work have greatly contributed to the standing and prestige of Newman High as a public monument. Mr. White is also an eminent church and civic worker. His friendly manner and individual traits serve as an inspiration and guide for students and teachers. X! Excuses seem to be the order of the da for at least 25 or 30 Newman High .,,,,.,a-.- Y School students every day as they face Ben Brock, assistant principal. Mr. Brock completes his second year as assistant to the principal, and finishes his seventh year as journalism teacher and publica- tions director. Keeping attendance rec- ords, scheduling, and assisting the prin- cipal in general, are duties of Mr. Brock. KEEPING THE FILES Among the duties of office girls Shirley Whit- worth and Beverly Pruitt, as they go about their daily work, is helping Mrs. Billy Savage, secre- tary to the principal. These girls earn non-academic credits in this manner, as well as receiving practi- cal office training. ew!! Graduates of Newman High School have re- ceived a well-rounded schedule of academic and extra-curricular subjects. They have studied Eng- lish, Spanish, mathematics, homemaking, vo- cational subjects, music, and religion, to name a few. A diploma from this school may remind stu- dents in the future of social life, studying, inter- scholastic League participation, and the like. It may remind them of colorful and joyful events and of the implied sadness of com- mencement day. In retrospect senior students have led the trek down the highway of high school life and have served as an example for juniors, sophomores and freshmen who still have part of the trip to complete. 5 MWWW - Reporter ..,,Y..,.. ........ Big Spring ma W63t6,Zd463,f6Z, The Amarillo Palo Duro Dons' first hopes of pull- ing a district victory out of the bag were completely smashed when the thunderous Mustangs unravelled to whip the Dons, 61-0, despite Pony Coach Elwood Turner's efforts to keep down the score. Richard Fer- rell, defensive halfback, intercepted three stray Palo Duro passes and scored two touchdowns. Sweetwaterls aerial attack displayed itself, as six touchdowns came through the skyward route. This was the first team that the Mustang forward wall held scoreless. clyde jones adolph olvera guard fullback In what many Mustang gridsters described as their toughest game of the season, Sweetwater plowed its way to a 20-15 decision over the brawny Big Spring Steers. james Harvey played one of his best games of the season, scoring two touchdowns on long runs and running over one extra point. Bobby Hartgraves, running like a steam roller, pushed across the other Mustang tally. jimmy Feagan, defense captain, showed his versatility as he set up a Pony TD on an Aiken aerial from mid-field to the 20 from which Feagan jogged to the four.
