Mr. Edwardts keen perception, kind humor, and sincere understanding of student problems have endeared him in the hearts of the entire student body of Newman High School. Covey To the Staff and Sponsor of the Yucca Gloriosa I extend congratu- lations for publishing another fine Year Book. To the students, and especially to the Seniors, I Want to express my sincere appreciation for your loyalty, co-operation, and valuable con- tributions Which you have given to Newman High. Today practically the whole World is at war. We read our papers and listen to our radios, hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. Whatevei' may come, I hope that each of you Will be found doing your very best to do those things that must be done. When the storm is over, the War clouds have drifted beyond the horizons, and clear skies again appear, may each of you be prepared to pursue a life of peace, happi- ness, and success and secure all the bountiful blessings that your Divine Creator has in store for you. Your friend, ROSS S. COVEY. PRINCIPAL FA66'S MESSAGE To the Students of Newman High School: My introductory year in Newman High School has been a most pleasant one. I should like to express my heart felt appreciation for the most hearty cooperation both on the part of faculty and students. We have had the doubly interesting task of learning your customs out of school as well as studying your characteristics, attitudes, and ideals in school. We have found in Sweetwater the highest type of High School student body. After graduation here, may you keep the sense of loyalty, integrity, self-reliance, patriotism, and industriousness that you have acquired in your homes and upon which we have tried to build while you were in school. Congratulations and commendations to the staff for another excel- lent year book. This type of book justifies our high rating among the year books of Texas. Best wishes to you all, Your friend, R. C. FAGG. Miss Dorothy Langley, office secretary, and Principal R. C. Fagg BCDARD OF EDUCATION Left to right-standing: Dan G. Shields, vice-president, C. S. Perkins. Sitting: A. G. Lee, presidentg Marshall Pior, Dalton Moore, and R. S. Covey. Other members include John Pepper and Walter Baucum. The supervision of our school system is of vital interest to us. Just who is responsible for the efficient service in controlling and managing the Sweetwater Public Schools? The duty rests with the Board of Education-a board which sees that the students may enjoy the services of capable teachers, fine buildings, and excellent school grounds. To these capable leaders, who take time from their business to direct school affairs, we, the students of Newman High School, wish to express sincere appreciation. We are proud of our school. We feel that it is among the best in West Texas. PARENT-TEACHERS ASS'N The Newman High School Parent-Teacher Association this year, as it has in the past, occupied a prominent place in sponsoring school activities for student education and enjoyment. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. Nelson and her staff of workers, aided by a commit- tee of students-Nisson Pearl, Bettye Brown, John McLaughlin, Carl Bardwell, Betty Lou Scott, and Towne-r Leeper-they have worked to- gether to make a better understanding among parents, teachers, and students. They have carried out the theme of the association-to pro- mote the welfare of youth in the home, the school, the church, and the community. ' V7 I. is ,, , uhm, at 5 357, . A lf wr! SEASON'S REVIEW The Mustangs started the ball rolling in the early non-conference tilts by defeating Mineral VVells, Brownwood, and Graham. Gaining momentum, they took conference victories from Midland, Colorado City, Abilene, and Lamesa. Then on November 11, at the hands of the Odessa Broncs, they suffered the first defeat of the '41 season in which 13 Mustangs played their last game in the new bowl. Getting their stride, they swept down upon Big Spring and San Angelo, from whom they won the District Championship. Then came the El Paso game with the Ysleta Indians, who defeated them 14-7 in the last game of the season. The Mustangs played six of the eleven games in the Mustang Bowl, only one of which was lost. Twenty-one boys won their letters on the A squad and fifteen on the B squad. The fact that 10 per cent of the student body participated directly in the sport is proof of the popularity of football in Newman High. . V! 1 A li - Johnny Hedrick displays good form while blocking. How FAVORIT Quan Qfcmtma .Queen The Yucca Gloriosa Queen was elected in a contest between the three classes. The contest started on Monday, October 20, and lasted through Saturday, November 15. Before the contest started, each class elected a girl for queen candidate in the contest who was to receive a certain number of votes for each time someone from her class had his annual picture made or bought an annual. Anyone Who had his picture made the first Week of the contest automatically gave the candidate of his class 400 votes, the second week, 300 votesg third week, 200 votes, and the fourth Week, 100 votes. Each penny paid down on an annual counted one for the class candidate. No class funds were used in any way in this contest. Only money used in buying annuals or payment for pictures was counted for votes. Thelma Carter, who Won the contest, was crowned Yucca Queen on November 18. RE SELECTED QZQMQMWZM The senior, junior, and sophomore favorites were elected by popu- lar vote of the classes at a time when solicitation of votes was im- possible. There was no campaigning, and the students were given ballots to vote for their favorite boy and girl at a time known only to the annual staff. Wad What Members of the W'ho's Who were selected by the high school faculty on the basis of personality, attitude, scholarship, and leadership. Each teacher was asked to recommend three seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore for consideration in order that students from each activity represented in Newman High would have a chance to be considered. From these names they then selected sixteen outstanding boys and girls from the three classes. A larger per cent was selected from the senior class because they have had two previous years to prove their ability. Qeafimea What emotion does this register? Hels kind to dumb animals!
