Alex Rios, Mary Austin, Chuck Potts, and Gerri Caldarola werethe officers elected to head the student council. This year the Student Council was revived at Newman. Most of the students presently at Newman did not realize that there had been a Council here before. Although there had been no active Student Council since 1955, it was at one time an important organization in the school. Sister Ellen Mary, previous principal, started to revive the Council when in 1957 and 1958 she called meetings of all the heads of organizations of the school. Sister Francis Therese again called the heads of the clubs and groups and suggested to them that the Council be revived at Newman. After this group una.ni.mously voted to put it before the student body. 'I'he students voted 186 to 89 in favor of the Student Council. The faculty then voted to approve the Council and on Friday February 16th, Al Rios, Mary Austin, Chuck Potts, and Gerri Caldarola took over as officers of the Newman Student Council. Before the students were asked to vote for the Council they were told that the purpose of the Council was to promote unity between the students and the faculty. They were told that the group making up the governing power of the Council would have the power to petition the faculty and make request for the entire student body.
