At the outset of the 1951 football campaign the Comets were expected to have a fairly good record. The coach work- ed hard and the boys worked hard to make it a good season, but fate was against us. First we met our cross-town rivals, Sterling Township and took the bitter pill of defeat to the tune of 19-O. The score indicates nothing of the game which was the best played with the Warriors in many a year. Next came Savanna who had all but four returning letter- men of the championship team of 1950. It was a big upset for the Comets to take the Indians by a score of 13 to 6. Lyons overwhelmed Community 52-13 with a great dis- play of blocking and tackling. After a brief chat during halftime we outscored them 14 to 13 in the second half. The Comets went to DeWitt to play an inspired ball club on homecoming night and came home on the short end of a 19 to 7 count. The Morrison Mustangs with their split T whipped the under- dog Comets on homecoming night 26-6. In this game as in all the games the Comets outplayed the Mustangs in the sec- ond half. On a hot, wet Sunday afternoon Community went to Iowa to play St. Mary's ofClinton. We lost againg this time by the score of 13 to 0. Fulton played Community at Sterling stadium and the fans really got their money's worth this game. With the backfield and the line really clicking together the Comets won 44-0. The backs swept the ends and drove off tackle for 15, 20, and 25 yards at a time, but time and time again the referees had penalized Community, and the plays were called back. Community went to Rock Falls on a sub zero night, Nov- ember 2, and were beaten by the Rockets 39 to 6. It was a game where nothing went right for the Comets. Wawity Saou.: C.C.H.S. 0 ............
