The Tiger 1988 Newkirk High Sthool Newkirk, OK 74647 Volume 39 Tear into fates...........6 Tear into involvement . . 68 Tear into attion.........90 Tiger Pulse.............113 Tear into tomorrow ..122 Young faces, new faces, old faces... sad faces, glad faces, stone faces... unsure faces, experienced faces, veteran faces... all kinds haunted the halls of HHS during the 1987-88 year. Freshmen eagerly anticipated their first year as high school participants. Sophomores fell into the swing of things after finishing their apprentice year. And the juniors and seniors maintained the awesome sophistication that is seemingly required of upperclossmen. All worked together, along with faculty ond staff, to provide enthusiasm, excitement, and progress to a fast-paced year. There were high times ond low times, good times and bad, but everyone greeted each challenge, survived, and faced the future with determination. After fierce competition ond lote hours working on the floor ond halls, the class received a mere second behind the sophomores; this was a big dis- appointment. Going to school, studying, ond working were also major rime con- sumers, but spore rime was found for social activities such os cruising, mov- ies, donees, ond cheering the Tiger teams to victory. Although everyone enjoyed these activities, senioritis set in or different times for different people, ond say- ings such os Only nine more months, Only 142 more days, or Only o few more hours until I'm out of here, were major symptoms. For many at HHS this escape was found in involvement of another type, involvement in organizations. Providing a means of escape for everyone was no easy task, but HHS rose to the challenge. FFA, student council, cheerleaders, chorus, FCA, bond, yearbook, SCION, and academic bowl oil furnished a variety of escapes to students. And through these involvements, many new and valuoble insights were gained, insights that will eventually help each student escape into adulthood. £ £ •V. £ •X £ •r. £ •a 69 A® x o The V yearbook staff came “flying into the school year selling yearbook sponsorships and boosters to finance the 1988 yearbook. These ef- forts combined two grueling days of pounding the pavement and giving sales pitches. With a major part of the financ- ing finished, next on the agenda was the yearbook assembly which proved both original and different. Instead of an assembly, the entire student body was transported to the football field to create a twenty yard 1988. An aerial picture was then taken which launched the be- ginning of a successful yearbook sales. It was then time to steal a computer. Mrs. Klugh graciously loaned her computer to the year- book staff which sped up copywriting and revision. But each member still had to perfect the art of preparing layouts, cropping and scheduling pictures, and brain- storming for ideas. The steady sounds of tapping typewriter keys and panicked cries from the staff were a few of the hints that proved the coming of one of the four deadlines through- out the year... but as anyone can tell the yearbook is completed, and hopefully it is the best NHS has ever had! Student council members began preparing early in the summer for an exciting year when several members attended Basic Leader- ship Workshop. Then before school started officers met and dis- cussed the year's activities. Creating spirit in special ways by gathering together the student body for dances, assemblies, and other events was the student coun- cil's main goal. Stuco sponsored the back to school dance, homecoming festiv- ities, candy canes, spring break out, Sadie Hawkins, and numerous other activities. Under the guidance of Royce Caldron, the members were led by Scott Bilger, president; John Lob- singer, vice-president; Heather Pratt, secretary; Dan Kahle, treas- urer; and Candace Layton, report- er historian. Scot strives to be all he can be There comes a week every year when the breezes get cooler and routines become set in con- crete and an indescribable ex- citement hangs over the halls and classrooms of NHS. Homecoming week may have seemed like some kind of pagan ritual to outsiders, but for stu- dents its arrival was a confirma- tion of fall and a chance for the student body to get crazy to- gether. To begin the week, Monday students wore ties, and on Tues- day students wore jams; by Wednesday everyone had gone crazy. On Thursday the Romans invaded and most wore bed- sheets giving them a sophisticat- ed “toga” name. Thursday also brought the final rush of perfect- ing skits, decorating, and making last minute touch-ups. Friday culminated the plan- ning, painting and painstaking work which accompanied home- coming week. The bricks of the walls had disappeared under lay- ers of signs, designs, and blue and gold streamers. Posters threatened to Sack Sperry, and students came prepared in their traditional blue and gold outfits. Excitement continued into the evening with spirited cheer- leaders, mums, and Toga with the Tigers t-shirts. It was an- nounced that the Sophomore Class received the traveling tro- phy, an honor given to the class with the most participation during homecoming week. In the opening ceremonies, the juniors presented the prom to the seniors. The ode to the seniors was given by Mr. Caldron, and then it was time to line up for the traditional grand march. After parading down the sidewalk, the couples found themselves walking through a tunnel onto a beautifully decorated dance-floor, with music by the band, White Rock. The cafetorium was decorated with tables covered in blue, hearts and arches made of balloons, park benches, and a buffet of several different kinds of finger foods. All in all it was a respectable evening. Everyone danced, laughed, relaxed, and now has A Night to Remember. First-time prom. locelyn Belot, along with date, Denise Mefford, takes part in a tra- ditional American custom. Rockin to the beat! The juniors and seni- ors dance to the music provided by White Rock. Cheek to cheek. Finally at the top, seniors shared fond memories of the past, good times for the present, and dreams of the future. In April the Maxwell family came to NHS in the senior play, The Boarding House Reach. Dedicated seniors made spare time to present the successful production. Just across the border, just outside of town, just beyond the bounds of justice, the seniors found the Six Flags ground. After a long bus ride and pizza at Showbiz, the class of '88 hit the roller coasters, water rides, and shops of Six Flags over Texas for an eventful evening. The last opportunity for the seniors to be together as a group before graduation was when the time came for them to will un- derclassmen the ability to be as great as the seniors and to have as many misfortunes as the seniors. The assembly was a time to share, mostly the things they would rather forget. These events capped the end of the seniors' high school career. The seniors will always remember the good times and good friends that were made in Newkirk High School. Senior Endings Newkirk Chamber of Commerce P.O. Box 290 Newkirk, OK 74647 A future career? Speaker for the exercise, Mr. Frosty Troy, editor of the Oklahoma Observer, glorified Oklahoma and gave a sense of idealism to the seniors. One by one each senior's name was called and each walked across the stage to receive his diploma. Golf balls were given to Mr. Sinor and flowers were given to the senior parents in appreciation of their hard work throughout the years. To the seniors of 1988, we cannot say goodbye, but we can say Auf Wiederzahn, until we meet again. Tee it up. The seniors bid Mr. Sinor a final farewell. Concentration. Let us take this book and the time spent therein to reflect upon all that was accomplished in the school year 1987-'88 — through victory and defeat, through happy times and sad, through achievement and failure. Only then will the past be meaningful. Only then will the future be significant. Thanks for a super year, staff!
