It is the desire of many that each student will take the keys that he has received here at Newkirk and use them to unlock the doors to a successful future. The Gold and Blue Staff sincerely hopes that they have recalled a few of the key impressions that have made the school year of 1966-67 memorable. After weeks of painstaking planning and work, the juniors presented a lovely banquet and a beautiful prom to the seniors. Flower arrangements and lighted candles graced the long tables at the banquet. Dinner music created a pleasant atmosphere for the guests as they were served by sophomore girls. For the prom, the gymnasium was transformed into an exquisite fairyland of beauty. The stately fountain in the center of the floor was in keeping with the theme, Three Coins in the Fountain. The fountain was surrounded all evening by admirers, and it was used as the background in dozens of pictures. During the evening hors d’oeuvres and punch were served to the guests. Music at the dance was provided by The Centuries.' filled the air and it was truly a night to remember. Laughter and gaiety the Fountain” Does my hair look alright? A scene from the banquet. Honors and Achievements The saying Achievement is a Cornerstone is very true at Newkirk High School. Each year many of our students receive various honors and awards for the goals that they have attained. These honors show the ability of these students to work diligently, to get along well with others, and to accept the humble responsibilities that go with the honor. Whether it is a social honor or an academic award, N.H. S. is proud of each and every one that has been earned. 1 Gold and Blue Awards Assembly Coach Hunter presented Athletic awards to Mike Hull, Most Outstanding Ath- lete and Best All-round Athlete to Irv- ing Love, not pictured. Introducing the Newkirk Tigers • • • The Tigers lost their head coach and several top offensive players, but are still picked to take it all again in the 14-B District race this year. ” This excerpt taken from the Ponca City News of September 7, 1966 shows the enthusiasm and pep going into the 1966-67 football season. We started the season with a series of three games played away from home. These were Pawhuska, Pawnee, and Chilocco. We won two of these. Pawnee and Chil- occo. Boys who were spotlighted during these games were Jim Belair, Dennis Gray, James Stuemky. Junior Harris, Boddie Harris, Bruce Scott, Mike Hull, and Da- vid Turner. In the next four games there were many highlights. At one point in the Tonkawa game, quarterback James Stuemky threw a 70 yard pass to Bruce Scott for the first points of the game, then went on to throw another pass to Mike Hull for the conversion. The Hominy-Newkirk game is a big spot in each football season--an important game for the pride of Newkirk. Besides playing a tough opponent we also had the job of playing against our former head coach, Tom Anthony. It was a good night—we won with a score of 24 to 8, we crowned our football queen, Connie Hayes, and we celebrated with a Homecoming dance. On Friday, October 21, we captured the District 14-B Championship for the second year running by win- ning over the Shidler Tigers. Among the several players spotlighted during this game was Jim Belair, the work- horse of the offense . Though we lost the Nowata game we came back with flying colors to win over Cherokee--20 to 9. Again we upset the balance and lost to the Cleveland Tigers with a score of 8-0. We had our chance for areal come- back, though as we played Cleveland again in the play- offs. A 14 point edge advanced us to the second round of the District playoffs. Our game with Jenks, at Jenks, was one of the most decisive games of the year, because the winner of this game moved on to the Class B semifinals playoff. Our boys, through intensive effort won 28-6 and we were that much nearer to the goal we wanted—State Class B Champions. The last and most exciting and heartbreaking game of our year was played in Blaine Stadium at Ponca City. We met Talihina Tigers, and the game was one to keep every football enthusiast on his toes, with eyes and ears open for the outcome—a fast and furious game. During this game three of our players were injured. Junior Har- ris, Bruce Scott, and Boddie Harris all suffered injuries during the game. As 2,000 Talihina and Newkirk fans watched the game to its end in the chilling 20 degree weather, Newkirk's dream of Class B Championship slowly faded. Our boys tried very hard for that honor, and merit our appreciation for their work and efforts. To the future Tigers of Newkirk High and to the two coaches, Luther Hunter and Garry O'Meally, we wish the best of luck in reaching what the 1966-67 Tigers almost accomplished. 58 Freshmen Enjoy Last Marie Engle, president Jeri Werneke, vice-president Bob Allen Nancy Backhaus Greg Bickle Frankie Blenz Kelly Burnette Dale Carson Kenneth Chuculate Sheryl Cline Larry Coleman Sandy Coleman Joyce Dowler Douglas Eisenhauer Diana Eitzmann Dianna Fisher Neal Gardner Suzan Goad Kay Goddard Delma Gray Karen Greenhagen Stephen Greenwood David Grose 2 Toy Guthrie Deana Harragarra Ruthie Hazaleus Clifton Hines Bill Horinek Debra Horinek Douglass Horinek Gary Horinek Steven Horinek Rodney Horton Daryl Johns Cinda Johnston Billy Kekahbah Debbie Kennedy Sue Kennedy Leslie Kirkendall Debby Kdmma Year of Junior High Linda Larssen Rosalie Hobbs, secretary Pam Johnstone, treasurer Marsha Laughlin Eddie Law David Leavitt Dale Lesemann James Lockwood Debby Masters Glenda McGowen Mike Moore Carla Neal Billy O'Dell Carol Oliver Lavona Olsen Dale Pitts Jerry Ramey Jim Roe Cinda Rogers Theda Sheets Ronnie Shurtz Beulah Sissons Barbara Smith Kathy Smith Tommy Smith Steve Springer Kevin Stalnaker Larry Stockton Bob Sutherland Chris Testerman Bonnie Tull Roger Van Hoy Diana Vap Linda Walker Jeri Warren Jeannine Welch James Wilhelm Randy Wood Eighth Grade Claims Junior High Football Queen Victor Stroup Sponsor Beverly Armstrong, Mike Belair, Connie Coleman, Steven Dunn, Linda En- gle, Deborah Folk, Wayne Foxworthy, John Free. We, the 1967 Gold and Blue Staff, hope that we have given you an accurate picture of the happenings here at Newkirk High School during the past year. It has been a long, slow, and tedious job that has required the help and cooperation of many outside the staff. We want to thank the administration and faculty for their help and understanding, Jerry's Studio at Pawnee and Osburn's Studio at Stillwater for taking our pic- tures, and you, the students, who provide the memories in this book that will be relived for years to come. We too wish to thank you advertisers in Newkirk, Ponca City, and Arkansas City for their help in financing the Gold and Blue. A special word of appreciation goes to our advisor, Mrs. Simmons, for her much needed advice. We realize that the bickering, the panic sessions, the mounds of photos, paper, glue, typewriter ribbons, and copy sheets represent to us the highlights of this school year. We hope that you, the reader, will enjoy reliving the past year with the compliments of the Gold and Blue Staff, because we feel that we have done our best.
