FFA or and 4-H 44 WMm KAinsnr wjmmum sunsismsn: QMMjOTB POmEWBUL Newkirk Receives Moral Victory in Loss to Bucks FAIRFAX — The ever-sur- prising Tigers of Newkirk came, up with a moral victory if not one real enough to put them into the state Class B playoffs as they came back to throw a scare into the llominy Bucks bffore losing, 6-0, here Friday night. The two teams battled evenly on the field with Newkirk com- ing out on Uie long end of the statistics but on the short end of the breaks. The Tigers out- gained the Bucks 148 to 124 yards, outscored them on first downs 9-5 and, until the light- ning struck in the third quarter, had a tie on penetrations 1-1. The lightning came in the form of a 70-yard touchdown gallop by Hominy’s halfback Doyel Clark late in the third period. It was the one play that the Tigers let get away from them and it was the one play that beat them. Coach Tom Anthony of the' Tigers said. “This was our best game by far. We had a real fine effort from all our boys, but that one play beat us.” The moral victory stems frorrt the 42-12 thrashing the Bucks ‘issued to the then unbeaten •Tigers midway through the reg- ular season. Coach Anthony said he was well pleased at the way his charges got up for this bat- tle. “The defense was real 1 strong,” h said. “We feel we outplayed them. They never really threatened until that one play.” The coach also noted that three potential scoring drives, by the Tigers failed in the sec- ond half of the game when they missed gaining first downs deep in Hominy territory by from ; one to three inches.” Both teams had threatened in i the first quarter when Newkirk drove to the Hominy 19 before | a penalty halted the march. Hominy came back to march to the Newkirk 18 but was also | hurt by a penalty. In the final period. Newkirk was in possession with seven seconds left on the Hominy 15 i but the final desperate play ! failed. 16, FOOTBALL SCORES - 1965 Season Newkirk 30 Lamont 0 Newkirk 28 Pawnee 8 Newkirk 32 Shilder 0 Newkirk 40 Fairfax 14 Newkirk 28 Tonkawa 0 Newkirk 14 Hominy 46 Newkirk 64 Chilocco 6 Newkirk 22 Nowata 32 Newkirk 30 Cherokee 0 Newkirk 26 Cleveland 6 DISTRICT PLAYOFF Newkirk 0 Hominy 6 Howard Cobb-Sr. Tom Rigdon-Sr. Gary Springer-Sr. Darrell Backhaus-Sr. Co-Captain-RT Co-Captain-QB Co-Captain-LG Guard Barry Bickle-Sr. Right End Dennis Butler-Sr. Left Tackle Dale Chapman-Sr. Wing Back Leon Fitzpatrick-Sr. Tackle Gary Smith-Sr. Right Guard Jim Perkins-Sr. Guard Gilbert Rippe-Sr. Tackle Mel Shanks-Sr. Left Back Jim Belair-Jr. Tail Back Lonnie Bradford-Jr. Center Bill Heydenburk-Jr. Half Back s Mike Hull-Jr. Left End Ronnie Johnstone-Jr Guard Irving Love-Jr Full Back Rick McCombs-Jr Half Back Bruce Scott-Jr. End Kim Stalnaker-Jr. Tackle David Turner-Jr. Left Back Bill Brown-Soph. This Newkirk as it appeared in 1905. The history of the city dates from September 16, 1893, when the famous Cherokee Strip was opened for settlement. Jealous of her good name, watchful of her best interests, strong in the bone and sinew of trade, Newkirk goes forth to the accomplishment of still greater achievements in the great race for supremacy.
