ruuiisnea by.- Annual Staff NEWKIRK HIGH SCHOOL Newkirk, Oklahoma GOLD AND BLUE Editor; J0 Alice Heydenburk Assistant Editor: Janet Troxel Advisor: Mrs. Minnie Simmons Mary Eula Cowles began teaching in Newkirk in 1941-1942. Through the years Mrs. Cowles taught by example, manners, ethics, grace, unselfish- ness, and community service to the many girls in her Homemaking classes and to the students she influenced through sponsoring classes, the Student Council, and Future Homemaking groups. To Mary Eula Cowles we dedicate this yearbook, and recognize that with her passing “a better fame is hers, for, though the busy hands are folded, the cheery voice stilled, and the kindly smile hid forever, she lives in the love of her de- voted family; in the hearts of all who came within the circle of her wonderfully magnetic personality; and . . .” we shall not forget her. Mr. Jack G. Gordon, always busy doing some kind of work. He is usually surrounded by a seemingly endless parade of paper work. There might be an assembly to sched- ule, correspondence with neighboring schools, school records to maintain, and then, when his desk is almost clear, it is time for nine week’s tests and grades to record. Next time our Tiger might find Mr. Gordon checking on build- ing maintenance, arranging necessary schedules for the teaching staff, and co-ordinating the facilities for athletic events. Our Tiger looking another time finds Mr. Gordon trying to help a student with his problems ranging from a forgotten locker combina- tion to obtaining an admit to class. The responsibility of discipline is a great one and it is handled with patience and justice in Mr. Gor- don's inner office. In addition to his various duties he is the sponsor of our Student Council and is constantly striving to do what is best for the students of Newkirk High School. A Valley of Ghosts” Greasepaint smells beckoned these Juniors to a fun and folic romp in a haunted house. For most of them, it was their first taste of the theatre. The actors found acting not so simple, and the stage crew found their job more important than they had imagined. However, whether on stage or behind the scenes, they found the world of the theatre to be warm and exciting. Help! A ghost's got me! The library is a source of both information and pleasure and is an important asset to our school. Anyone who has ventured into the world of books can understand why we at NHS value our collection so highly. New Books' Welcome additions to our library. Head Librarian: Mrs. Agnes Ha it Librarians: Cecil Hill, Roy Pappan. Librarians: Carol Turner Sandra Eitzmann Joe Weatherman For the first time at NHS an activity credit has been offered to students interested in the workings of a library. They received informative and practical experience. A valuable asset to our school library as well as a beneficial activity for the students participating, we at NHS hope it will become a permanent part of school life.
