We are very proud of her accomplishments. From the days of the First Run, the establishment of towns, growth of civilization, she has made a glorious struggle to become a land we love. Our ancestors have set up freedoms and protections for us. We have established ourselves to keep it that way no matter what the race, creed, or color of man. This memorable Golden jubilee reminds all of us how proud we are of our wonderful state, Oklahoma. ,.,m'f- SEATED: L nda Fulton-Business Manager, joan Horinek-Activities Ed., Marg Wathor-Freshman Ed., Kay Ross-8th Grade Ed., gelores Rademacher-Photographer. We would like to thank the administration for all the guidance they have offered the students in the '56 -'57 school term. They have given help with problems, offered oppor- tunities for education, urged leadership, maintained the standards established by the North Central Association, and provided extracurricular activities. The schools of this community are maintained for the purpose of offering the opportunity for an education. The time, thinking, and research students have invested in their daily life will determine the benefits they derive from the expenditure of the parents and efforts of the teachers. ELLIS F. HISTORY, CLASS OF '57 It seems that only yesterday we were occupying the first grade room and being locked in the clothes closet by Mrs. Ada Jackson-though that was 'way back in 1945- Those who believed they disliked Mrs. Jackson took for the nearest exit, the window, but that was just the beginnin , for some of the boys spent more time locked in the clothes closet than they did in the class room. Shannon Richards was occupied much of the time with the Board of Education. Those in our first rade were, Charles Gamsjager, Phil Clark, Leonard Childers, Buster Davidson, James Beard, Homer Honn, Larry Howard, Leslie Johnston, Richard Kennedy, Arnold Martin, Donald Merz, Shannon Richards and Bobby Robinson who, I might add made A's and B's. Also in the group were Ralph Rouse, Ron- nie Rouse, Billy Scott, Francis Shafer, James Shelly, Frank Swope, Jerry Sutherland, Harold Tally, Wayne Walker, Charles Reaves, Loyd Rhoades, Crai Free, Richard Johnston and DeArmond Wiles. The girfs were Patricia Barger, Jeannean Carson, Annabelle Coate, Ada Sue Cox, Patricia Hunnicutt, Patsy Letterman, Vivian Lockwood, Donna Perez, Barbara Sands, and Frankie Marshall. In the second grade Mrs. Nan Haster helped us estab- lish the general store and the rhythm band. We also added to our class, Donald Roe, Michael Stewart, Shirley Kirkendall, and Larry Glass-but we lost several who moved to other towns. During the third grade little out of the ordinary hap- pened, but as usual the teacher, Mrs. Marie Conrad, was glad ro see us go. Victor Andrews, Raymond Blakey, Lonnie Glenn, Glen Powell, and Terry Irons, and Sharon Helsel joined us. We were all happy to leave the 'little' buildin and go to the big building for our fourth grade. The unlucky teacher, Mrs. Leonard Widener, seemed to know just how to handle us. One day ten boys were sent to the principal and each met with the Board of Education. This was the year we added Carl Gosting, but lost several girls. For our six girls there were twenty-five boys.Patricia Hunni- cutt seemed to take care of her share. 0 We were surely happy to get to the fifth grade and Mrs. Patricia Drake, our teacher, who was the most. We gained Danalee Rowell, Dianne Tremble, and Margaret aten. Our baseball team could beat all but the seventh grade. Our sixth teacher, Mrs. Cora Regnier was very strict, but perhaps even more discipline might have helped Mr. Kelly, who had to keep a ready supply of window glass on hand to replace windows we knocked out with base- balls. We gained Sonya Ames, Mary Isemberg, Jimmy Williams, and Jerry Eckler. Our seventh grade teacher, James H. Ware, we will remember for a long time. We really became interested in football and baseball, but-instead of practicing base- ball at the north park, we usually cleaned it up. Our new class members were David Bamhill, Donna Young, and Billy Boyer. In the eighth grade we took a big jump and moved to the high school building and had the opportunity to change teachers for each class. That was the year DeArmond's heart skipped a beat-Elaine Horn entered our class. We also added Shirley Kaylor, Harry Wolf, Mike McD0well,:-nd Ronald Horton. 1954 was the big year for this active class. Sixty- three eager Freshmen were anxious and yet a bit scared to join the other classes at Newkirk High. The boys kind of took over as class officers. Lonnie Glen was presi- dent, Vic Andrews was vice-president, and Norman Brown was secretary-treasurer. Joan Horinek and Craig Free were cheerleaders. Harold Marcum and Miss Grace Snow were the lucky sponsors that year. They got into the swin of things by diligently working on a home- coming cfass float and winning a prize. Sheralyn Taylor was the candidate for Football Queen. Pat Hoffman was the Freshman band queen candidate with Ronnie Rouse as business manager. At the beginning of the Sophomore year, Sheralyn Tay- lor was elected President, Julia Wathor, Secretary-treas- urer, and Wa ne Walker, Vice-President. Nelson Dutton and Coach All Williamson did very well as sponsors that year b keeping the class meetings as orderly as possi- ble. The football queen candidate that year was Donna Youn Bowman. Wanda Enninga was elected to represent the class as band queen candidate. We gradually began to be noticed around school as members of our class were elected to serve on thePaper Staff, Student Council, Annual Staff, Pep Club, FFA, FHA, Band, Honor Society, Office and Committee helpers. Junior class officers were Jerry Sutherland, Billy Boyer, Veva Dunn, and Mike McDowell. Nelson Dutton and Superintendent Ellis Nantz had the task of class sponsor. The class really went to work on the ticket sellini, contest and were rewarded by their candidate, Julia athor, reigning as Homecoming Football Queen. They really fumished their share of queens. Joan Horinek was Basketball Queen and Donna Yoimg Bowman was FFA Sweetheart. Juniors entered into the Who's Who contest and Ronnie Rouse, Julia Wathor, Bob Robinson, Larry Glass, Donna Young Bowman, and Pat Casey won honors. Many long and tiring hours were spent in re- hearsing for the junior play under the direction of Miss Alma Lazenby. She had quite a time keeping the entire football team from sneaking in the fire escape. Jerry Sutherland and Jim Williams shared top billing in duel casts in 'Rest Assured'. The cast had a big party after- wards with simply bushels of mistletoe. The Tigers, many of whom were juniors, were undefeated in play-off games until the Area State play-off game with Lindsay which they lost by one penetration. The busload of sob- bing Pep Club girls will remember this game always. Lonnie Glen, tackle, Donald Wanko, guard, Francis Shafer, centerg Leslie Johnston, guard, Larry Glass, back, Harold Tally, back, and Frank Swope, back, are some of the boys who did outstanding work for the team. Larry Glass was co-captain of the basketball team. Victor Andrews, Carl Gosting, Francis Shafer, Mike McDowell, Harold Tally, Frank Swope, and Larry Glass helped with the highly successful year in track, with Lonnie Glen as the captain. The juniors worked especially hard preparing for the jr-sr banquet and prom. Neptune's Courts' in aqua and white carried the sea illusion over the entire hall. Giant seashells, a large octopus, brightly colored and strange looking tropical fish, ships, mermaids, fish nets, and other clever ideas helped make this banquet one that the students will never forget. Dorothy Sappington and Jim- mie Huster received the American Legion Citizenship award. Francis Shafer and Mike McDowell were chosen to represent their class at Boys' State while Marilyn Horinek and Joan Horinek attended Girls' State. At the closing of the l955'1956 school we bade farewell to the senior class and prepared to step into their shoes. We'll never for et this senior year with all its happy times and its difgculties. We've had the thrill of being able to enjoy the new addition to the high school. Mrs. Robert Holland was our new teacher for English IV. Mrs. Joanne Breshears took over at the beginning of the sec- ond semester with the Literature class. Joan Horinek was the representative for football queen. Julia Wathor and Jeannean Carson were basketball queen attendants, and Wanda Enninga was chosen to represent the class as band queen candidate with Bob Robinson her manager. The football team, with Larry Glass and Harold Tally as co-captains soared to victory until the Weatherford Eagles whacked Newkirk by winning 27- 20 in the semi- finals. The basketball team had a very good record with I3 wins and 5 losses. In the magazine sales, Julia Wathor and Ronnie Rouse were team captains, and Julia spent most of the time wearing the convict shirt of the losing side. Ronnie served as the capable and hard- working president, Kathryn Suedmeier served as secre- tary, Jerry Sutherland was vice-president, and Mike McDowell handled all our money. Joan Horinek and Jim Williams led the seniors in some roaring yells at assem- blies. Wayne Walker was editor of the Gold and Blue, Joan Horinek, president of FHA, Pat Casey, president of FFA, and the senior division of typing edited the paper each month. All the offices on the Student Council were held by members-of the senior classg Francis Shafer, president, Sheralyn Taylor, vice-president, Julia Wathor, secretary, and Ronnie Rouse, treasurer. Several members of the class helped fill the busload of Newkirk talent that traveled to other schools for exchange assemblies, Wayne Walker, Bob Robinson, Joan Horinek, Julia Wathor, Kathryn Suedmeier, Jeannean Carson, Katie Trenary, Wanda Enninga, Pat Casey, and Jake Clover. The entire school voted on the Who's Who nominees electing Harold Tally, Pat Caseyg Mike McDowell, Larry Glass, Bob Robinson, Joan Horinek, and Julia Wathor. As years go by, so the future students will not forget the 1957 senior class, they are leaving their pictures in the halls of N.H.S. By his high scholastic record, Ronnie Rouse was recognized as valedictorian and Francis Shafer as salu- tatorian. Other outstanding members of the class are on the State Honor Society, Joan Horinek, Francis Shafer, Ronnie Rouse,.Mike McDowell, Wayne Walker, Pat Casey, and Billy Boyer. This year has passed-almost too quickly-leaving some seniors heaving big sighs of relief and others sad at the prospect of leaving old N.H.S. where they have shared many happy experiences. These four years have been the unforgetable ones of the Newkirk Senior Class of '57 and we wish to extend all the luck and happiness possible to the future classes of Newkirk High School.
