CC§§IIV’Htic’s 14 ii«, Hliat? Although you may not like to admit it, gossip and hearsay are a major part of your life at NHS. By the way, rumor has it that they broke up ... I’m not one to gossip, but I hear that he’s going after her . .. Did ya hear about the party at L___________’s house? ... Did you see what she was wearing today? She oughta be shot .. . Since when have they been going out? ... Yes! the yearbook is going to be in paperback this year. 1. S. Czaban, S. Dugas 2. F. Simboski, J. Miller 3. L. Carducci, C. Casasanta 4. R. Doyle, J. Feld 5. For others, however, school is a place to socialize with friends, to hear the latest gossip, and to see and be seen. All in addition to getting an education. For most, there is time for everything. Some manage their time well, studying diligently, while others seem to be in a perpetual “senior slide. 1. L. Boccia, Mrs. Brown 2. C. Anderson, H. Bartyzel 3. Mr. Pilotte, S. Scialabba 4. S. Which side of the Coke controversy are you on? New Coke or Coke Classic? Speaking of controversies -Do you prefer the Whopper or the Big Mac - Burger King or MacDonald’s? 1985 was the year of the Nutra-sweet takeover. Good-bye saccharin! Not to mention cafeteria food! -UFO’s (Unidentified Floating Objects!) Right around prom time, how many girls do you find on crash diets to fit into their gowns? Ilie Mi i 1 i« They sure don’t have to worry about finding an extra calorie in their soda! Diet Coke, Caffeine-Free Diet Coke, I Calorie Tab, Caffeine-Free Diet Sprite! And the list goes on! Do you remember when milk costs 6? and your mom used to wrap it in foil so you wouldn’t lose it! Things have changed! 6 1. M. Frate, A. Brown 2. R. Prcndcrgast 3. R. Oses 4. R. Muello 5. A. Skal, L. Pandiscia If you're not eating at MacDonald's, shopping at the mall, or gossipping to your heart’s content, what are you doing? Well, at NHS it's hard to say because of the over-abundance of entertainment available. Maybe you’re going to one of NHS's dramatic or musical productions like “Arsenic and Old Lace” and “South Pacific.” Of course, you could always see a movie: Back to the Future and Rambo are big hits this year. Or maybe you'd like to see The Power Station. Rush, Tears for Fears, or Dire Straits at the Civic Center. But, whatever you choose in entertainment, it’s available to you. 9 fASHCN Hiiat What's the style??! Well, this year, clothes are covered with paisleys, plaids, and prints, and usually accompanied by a “For-enza” sweater. Skirt lengths moved from mid-thigh to midcalf. Picture “Joe Fashion” wearing a plastic “swatch”, Levis 501 Jeans, and a pair of Reebok sneakers! Styling gels and mousse are needed to tame this year’s buzz cuts and bob hair-do’s. On spirit day you can always spot the traditional NHS sweatshirts, team shirts, and sometimes even a toga or two! 10 Diess Cede? 9 1. G. Bohan 2. R. Doyblc. M. Fishberg 3. S. Ashe 4. D. Burgio, P. From Ed Grimley sound- and look-alikes, Jason Taylor and Fawn Shapiro, to our numerous pseudo- Dr. Ruth's, ours is an all-around funny class. But don’t forget the humor from Hollywood. Between the nerdy antics of Pee-Wee Herman and Eddie Murphy’s comedic masterpiece, “Beverly Hills Cop”, there was never a serious moment. Years from now, you may try to convince yourself that such childishness isn’t funny, but, deep down, you’ll be laughing. 5 6 Is Wild! 8 1. A. Curran 2. Anonymous 3. B. Gilmartin, R. Oscs, B. And, during weekends, he can be found in deep depression, a symptom of his “school withdrawal”, right? WRONG! Newington High Students really get around. They can be found in the discotheques, museums, and beaches of the world; places like Spain, Portugul, France, Greece, Italy and even Aruba. Next stop - the moon! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1. Trip to Spain 2. For example, although by the time it reached Connecticut shores it had subsided dramatically, storm Gloria caused quite a bit of damage in Newington. In town elections. Republicans took control of the Board of Education, the Town Council, and even the mayoral seat. An extensive and sordid investigation was made when it was found that one of Newington’s fire houses was being bugged. The new Senior Citizens Center was opened in the renovated New Meadow School. Plans were made for an expansion of Lucy Robbins Welles Library. In addition, Newington's National Honor Society held its annual Arts Crafts Festival where artisans from across the state displayed their wares for the public. 40 41 Dawn M. In South Africa, the anti-Apartheid movement grew tremendously as black unrest heightened. President Reagan boycotted Libya and urged other countries to do the same in response to Qadafi’s terrorist attacks against Americans. Wham! was the first Western group to perform in Red China. Soviet leader, Gorbachev met with President Reagan to discuss the issues between our two countries (primarily Star Wars). Numerous airplane hijackings and airport bombings plagued the world’s travellers during 1985. As a result of the efforts of Live Aid, led by Bob Geldof, millions of dollars poured into Ethiopia to help the starving. The war in the Middle East continued with almost daily reports of fighting and bombings. 72 Joanne N. Roy NJ No go SQ-ing . Great times w RR, AS. KB. KC. MP. TM, JL, JL, ML. JT, SC, MC, LM. EU. The theme, “When the Lights Go Down”, was a success because of the hard work done by many people. There was a romantic atmosphere as the Prom song “Just You And I” played, and everyone danced to the live band. When the night started to come to an end, the court was chosen. The King and Queen were Tom Stack and Jody O'Connor. Along with them, as members of the court, were Jason Taylor and Lisa Boccia, Neil McMahon and Diane Charamut, Jason Barnett and Lauren Aguiar, and Kirk Pekrul and Kathy Cotter. 95 A Variety Of Talent “Showcase ’86,” the annual Newington High School talent revue, was held on February 6 in the Charles Bowes Auditorium. The show was sponsored by the Newington High School Band and featured some of the top musical, comedy and dance performers at the school. The event was produced and directed by NHS Band director, Mr. John Mills. The Jazz Ensemble provided accompaniment for several acts and did two feature spots of their own. Many vocalists prepared their renditions of popular favorites from a multi- tude of recording artists. Dance talent was displayed by the NHS Dance Team and also in the form of breakdancing, jazz, and a mime routine. Original comedy was featured in the traditional senior skit, and by a stand-up comic who presented his observations on coping with life. Three bands, all with great new talent, were highlighted. The two emcees for “Showcase”, Doug Chara-mut and Jason Taylor, introduced this potpourri of talent throughout the night. 97 All NHS Is A Stage This year’s Drama Club productions of “Help”, The Haunted Carousel”, and “Arsenic and Old Lace” marked the end for many one, two, three, four, and seven year members. Their many 7-11 runs quenched their thirst and cured many black eyes. Of all their adventures, one thought remains: “Listen, LMF, the law’s the law. I can’t marry you. We only have one week to build the set!” K. Cotter, J. Miller, L. Aguiar, T. Valori, D. Swift Practice Makes Perfection S. Ashe B. Finnegan, C. Holland T. Ponte, S. Katz To the members of the Symphonic Band, it may have seemed that all they ever did was practice, practice, practice. But, the practicing paid off. They were terrific! They took trips to Montreal and Florida and had “fun” fundraisers to pay for them. Babysitting at the Crafts Fair, selling Entertainment books, and making 411 bags of popcorn are experiences they will never forget. Next year’s group is going to have to try hard to do as well. “Complaints, Complaints” This year’s Concert Band, composed primarily of freshmen and sophomores, seemed to be a battle ground between director and musicians. Shouts of, “Flutes, get rid of the gum.”, “Don’t pack-up yet!” and “Can I have some quiet please” were typical. Yet this band of musically talented youngsters pulled together to do what they do best: play in beautiful harmony to the delight of all those fortunate enough to have a chance to hear them. This year’s concert band is to be applauded. D. Bzowycky. S. Santilli 99 Look Out Montreal! If anyone has spent 5th period in the choir room, one knows what an “active” place it is. The Concert Choir consists of seventy of the most uncontrollable musicians NHS has ever seen. The basses and tenors never returned their tuxedoes or sat in the right places. The majority of the group claimed that it never received music. Mr. Treggor’s rebuttal to all of this was his infamous watch which deprived members of valuable lunch time on many occasions. Also “ 6” was found on many report cards which translated into “erratic behavior. Despite all of this, much good did emerge from the choir room, such as excellent performances and lasting friendships. Even Mr. Treggor’s socks are beginning to match. Thus, the Concert Choir is a defiant, noisy yet loveable group! Look out Montreal, here they come! D. Swift, K. Anderson, T. Valorie too K. Cotter, V. Huschke S. Marcellino, G. Prill On The Road To Success The Girls’ Choir had a few minor problems: excessive talking, chewing of gum, and tardiness were only a few. But, they pulled themselves together under the guiding light of Lisa and Sara, the President and Librarian respectively, and more importantly Mrs. Dunham. In the end, everything turned out just fine for these “vocal” girls. Mrs. C. Dunham Diligently rehearsing. 101 102 The Experiment Works Newington’s latest experiment was to make Chamber Choir a one-quarter credit course instead of an extra-curricular activity. This past winter, they were triumphant in all their holiday concerts, despite their old-fashioned dresses, baggy tights, and the ill-fated Canoe Club. Throughout their two week concert period, one motto reigned: “No eat, No sing”. Their most impressive performance was the Wassail Feaste. All through their many rehearsals, they had one major problem: the lack of forks at the dinner table. So, they asked Mr. Treggor, “What about forks?” He replied in a catty manner, “No forks, just KNIVES!” They would like to extend their greatest appreciation to Mr. Josef Treggor for his time and dedication. “Thus, we leave you, Jose with this final thought- Nun Dan-ket Alle Gott.” (Montreal 18:86) M. Uliano, K. Taylor K. Grimes, T. Valorie, J. Miller L. Aguiar J. Johnson S. Sponzo, R. Hirtle They’ll String You Along Orchestra was a great organization. The rehearsals were fun, but sometimes hard. Either the trumpets talked too much, Sonia was too “loud , or “Swa-mi” Dave didn’t watch. And Mr. Trcg-gor had several pins. If it’s not “whimpy”, it’s “bah, hum bach”, or “save the whales”. The trips were unforgettable! The locations were Washington, D.C., Quebec City, Florida, and this year Montreal. “Thank you, Mr. Treggor. We’ll miss you.” i F4 Mr. Treggor C. Joseph, J. Guite 103 The Best! Late nights of rehearsal and hard work made the NHS Chamber Orchestra what it is today - the best. Thus, they represented Newington High garbed in baroque dress in performances at the Civic Center, City Place, West Farms Mall, the Kellogg-Eddy House, and the Hartford Steam Boiler. “Good luck next year, guys. We love you Mr. Treggor.” Ah, Success! This year’s Jazz Band was, once again, outstanding. Last year, they traveled to Boston for the Berklee School of Music High School Jazz Festival. Through much hard work, they prepared for the year’s big competition - their trip to Montreal. As usual, they were very successful at the competition. They also thrilled the audience at “Showcase ’86” with their unique style and flare. Even though seven seniors are graduating from the band this year, next year’s band looks to be just as successful. “Thanks, Mr. Mills, Good Luck! Keep up the tradition.” J. McMahon T. Clark, G. Justo A. Anderson, J. Asmus, M. Sirik Jazz Ensemble For Your Half-time Entertainment The NHS Marching Band, under the field direction of drum majors Linda Kelly and Diane Peak, had a tough season on account of inclement weather conditions. Many times they braved the rain and the cold to perform half-time shows at weekend football games. Some of their more memorable musical numbers were: “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Bird-land , and “Los Cotoras . Despite the weather, a good time was had by all, once the performance began on the field. Applause to the Dance Team who doubled as this year’s Flag Corps, and the Band wishes to extend to Mr. Mills — “Thank you for everything!!” Dedication Pays Off Through all of this year’s rain and snow, with the dedication of mailmen, the Dance Team was out on the field to support the NHS football team. They managed to get their practicing done in between trips to 7-Eleven and Abdow’s breakfast bar. The team’s hard work paid off. They won the State Dance Drill Competition!! “Good luck to the team and future captains. “Hail to the newest addition: male dance team members. terrlBi ■■■ Row I: S. Dugas, K. Anderson, S. Dugas Evening Of Fun And Dancing The Harvest Homecoming, held on Nov. 16, was a night of great music and fun. The theme song for this traditional affair was Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are . The autumn atmosphere was successfully created by the seasonal decorations. They included the rustic haywagon, cornstalks, and leaves. As the night came to a close, the court was chosen. The King was Tom Stack and the Queen was Jody O’Connor. Their court consisted of Jason Taylor and Wendy Wojtusik, Paul Gamble and Diane Charamut, Gino Giansanti and Diana Olschefski, and Jason Barnett and Kathy Cotter. 107 Service = Fun The National Honor Society is based on three criteria: leadership, scholarship, and character. These top students used these characteristics inherent in their personalities to do such good works as tutoring students and serving their community by volunteering at the local library and hospitals. Their main fund raiser this year, the Crafts Fair, was a huge success and a lot of “fun”. This was a group of hardworking, responsible, and caring people who worked to make this year memorable, productive, and fun. Congressional Seminar After showing interest in government and answering a battery of essay questions, Tom Wankerl was chosen to represent NHS at the 1986 Washington Workshops Congressional Seminar. During his week in Washington D.C., he and the other students from all over the U.S. formed a model Congress , debated timely national and international issues, and spoke with powerful figures in our country’s government. When asked whether or not he met President Reagan, Tom responded in true political style, “No comment.” DAR Daughters of the American Revolution Jody O’Connor ''If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world, and that his heart is no island cut off from other lands, but a continent that joins to them. - Francis Bacon tin Civitan The Civitan trip to Colebrook was a rewarding and educational experience for its winner, Sondra Rocco. A major quality they attempted to develop in each participant was leadership. One was taught how to handle oneself in leadership situations. In doing so, one learned how to settle arguments concerning a specific problem and how to deal with people. During Sondra’s stay, a guest speaker discussed tips on how to succeed in life and also the nature of politics. Through discussions such as these, and social activities, many new friends were made. As a whole, it was a great experience!! State Student Advisory Council In 1981, the Commissioner of Education established the State Student Advisory Council on Education. The purpose of this council is to provide students with a voice in educational planning. This year, our representative was Sarah Sponzo. The commissioner annually selects twenty-seven high school students to serve on the board. Students are chosen for activities, school involvement, and the ability to communicate both written and orally. Each year, students on the council choose topics and problems that effect high school students. Through projection papers, special research projects, and other methods, they presented these problems to the commissioner and the Board of Education for possible action. In the past, the Student Advisory Council has been very successful and hopes to continue its work. “Thank you Dr. Tirozzi and Judy.” in The Best Of Times Chosen for their outstanding academic and extracurricular records, Tom Wankerl, Bill D’Angelo, Chris Pandiscia, Jason Taylor, and Robert Sohn attended Boys’ State in late June 1985. During this week-long government seminar at Eastern Connecticut State University, the boys elected municipal and state government officials, debated issues facing our state’s government, and gave audience to a variety of political figures. But, it was not all work. They made lasting friendships with many of the other four hundred delegates from all over Connecticut. And, who could forget the Saratopolis incident or the Variety Show? They had only one complaint - no girls! Susan Ashe, Jody O’Connor, and Tracy Clark were chosen to be a few amongst two hundred girls from all over Connecticut to attend Girls’ State this past summer. Because of their excellent school records, they were able to attend the week-long government seminar. They participated in both mock state government (including a Senate, House of Representatives, and even a gubernatorial race), and several mock town and city governments in which each girl held a position. Throughout the week, speakers of all kinds came to speak to them. For them, the week was perfect except for one thing - no boys. ii.’ Senior Officers: T. Valorie, S. Ashe, K. Cotter, J. O’Connor. D. So, to this end, they decided, with the approval of a vast majority of our class, that the Senior Prom should be held outside the school. But where? After a long and trying search and many 7 a.m. meetings, Marc Antony's, they decided, was the perfect place. Leaders Lead A certain pattern in the work habits of the member of the Student Council surfaced early in the year: 1. Officers, Jody, Di, Di, and Sondra, diligently planned meetings. 2. Members went to meetings. 3. Members filled out cards. 4. Members signed up for committees. 5. Members did not show up at committee meetings. So, the officers, with Mrs. Gossoo’s help, humored the members into shape, and, because of their efforts, had a successful year- “Thanks Mrs. G., good luck S.” J. O’Connor (Pres.), D. Charamut (V. They ran the Sadie Hawkin’s Dance, Santa’s Workshop, a carol sing, and a car wash. As always, the highlight of the year was the Holiday Tea put on by the club members for the entire High School staff. This year the group undertook as a fundraiser the delivery of the New York Times to subscribers within the building. Club members were also involved in running the Library’s computer system and were asked to try out several programs being considered for purchase. The annual picnic in the Spring capped another productive year for the club. E. Rothauser, B. Giddings, G. Rothauscr Copy Cat Club The AV Club consisted of those students who had an interest in photography, electronics, and computers. This organization was a necessary component at the various stage productions. They helped to produce and run these productions. Also, most members served as student aides to the teachers during the day. Most had the opportunity to be compensated for jobs they did during the evening hours. This club was open to all students. 12 Internationally Conscious The United Nations Club was a powerful voice of truth and international awareness that kept watch and spoke out on world affairs. They questioned Senator Dodd on foreign policy and when he tried to side-step the issue, a cry rang out, Just answer the question. Senator!” When they were asked their opinions of the South African situation, they chanted, Freedom, YES, Apartheid, NO!” When questioned. “What’s wrong with Central America? , they replied, “Hondorus and El Salvador: The lands of sun-drenchcd beaches, crystal blue waters, and a self-perpetuating series of bloody power struggles and violations of basic human rights. They were the United Nations club and they were internationally conscious. Many thanks to our political guiding light: Vince” Lombardi. Key Elements of the Coup d' etat: A. Koun-aris (Dictator), M. Simcone (Premier), S. Rubbo (Sec. of War) 123 (M + A)(T-H)= (LxE)A + G(U + E) The highlight of the Math League's successful year came at Avon High School. In this ironic turn of events, the members feigned a bus hijacking, spoke out against sexual discrimination, and had milk carton fights. With this win, the team cemented a divisional first place rank at the meeting. Hills And Valleys The Alternative, the school’s literary magazine overcame its many difficulties to complete a very successful year. They showed dedication in their work by handing their articles in on time. During their sometimes lengthy meetings, they all pitched in to improve one anothers’ stories. The fact that they did not have a production manager did not get in the way of these students. They tackled each task with great enthusiasm. “Thanks, Mr. Boorman.” B. Isikoff, A. This is due to the valiant efforts of Mrs. Guerra, the Scribe advisor. Without her help, the newspaper, which proved to be a valuable artistic and editorial outlet for NHS students, would have been nonexistent. “Thank-you enormously Mrs. Guerra!!” As Schools Match Wits The As Schools Match Wits team consists of a dedicated group of students who meet twice a week and ask each other questions concerning music, history, art, literature, and general knowledge. In an actual match, a team has five seconds to answer a question given to them. The initial question, when answered correctly, allows the team to score points. This year's members were seniors Sue Ashe, Bill D Angelo, Daniel Fu, and Frank Malloy; juniors Prakash Mishra, Jim Stascavage, and Kim Thomsen; and sophomores Abe Katzman and Eric Wisnefsky. They took field trips to art museums, shows, and exhibitions, and decorated the school windows for holidays and other events. They also worked on individual art projects as well. Members agree that the Art Club exposed them to a variety of art forms and enhanced their artistic abilities. Future Chefs A small group of NHS students leave school early everyday and go to the School of Culinary Arts in Wethersfield. They all hope to pursue a career in the field of gourmet cooking and become chefs. These students are learning that the way to a person’s heart is through the stomach. Row I: B. Much of the credit is due to both Mr. Perotti and Mr. Maleto, who devoted their time for organizational help. Doug Charamut (President), Jason Taylor (Vice-President), and Beth Hollfelder (Treasurer) were memorable officers of this club. One of their outstanding trips was taken to New Hampshire. It was great! The skiing conditions were perfect, too! This trip made club history, and we’re sure the members will fondly look back on this high school memory. With the ever-increasing membership, one can look forward to next year with just as much enthusiasm. 127 The Byline The various staffs of the yearbook, small as they were, worked together slowly but well in the production of Sequin '86. The editors and art staff met every Thursday in a dank, little corner of the school, uncharted territory lor many students, and mulled over stacks of photos, bills, receipts, write-ups, and typing paper. And, after nearly a year of working their fingers to the bone, they brought forth this book that you now hold in your hands - quite a feat! However, their success was due a great deal to Mrs. Erlandson, Mrs. DeNa-poli, Mr. Alfano, and Bruno. - “Thanx! K. Cotter-Sports Editor M. Ancona-Activities Editor L. Aguiar-Senior Editor 128 T. The fun began at camp when they “confessed” their abilities and how much they “loved their Coach”. As the season progressed, the team improved, and so did their record. Some of the highlights of the season included: AG’s fainting spell, KA’s spasmatic screams, RP’s excess in bruises, MP’s extra laps, KM’s “accidental” splits, JL’s famous J-moves, and BW’s original T-shirts. They ended their season with their annual run to Friendly’s, “Up Camp, Down Willard.” 1. A. Guzzo 2. A. Guzzo 3. K. Manyon 4. It has been a different year with many changes, but it was fun! They will all remember the rainy football and soccer games, megaphones, tournament games, and muddy Thanksgiving! Although there were only three seniors: Diane, Kathy, and Wendy, it was a year to remember. Because of the time that everyone put in, it was a successful year. The team couldn’t leave until Petrizzo got there, but when he did, they took their nice short trip down 1-91, asking- “Hey B.T., Where is Staples anyway?” They thought their coach, B.T. was God and Newington was very proud of their infamous “Staple Removers”- the Golden Boy, Gumby, Roach, Stemmer, Pecker, A.J. Things weren't exactly “perfect” when their season started: they lost their first game, Liz was always on the ground, Michelle forgot her cleats, miscalculations were made by Kim, Lisa got in a scrap, and they lost 3 vaulable players to injuries-Michelle, Jessie and Jen. But those soccer smurfs, led by Liz, Kelly and Alicia, worked together putting forth 101% effort. “Cats in the Cradle”, Pinkies, and “Who da Best” were all essential parts of each pre-game procedure. The Boys’ Cross Country Team started out with a great season, concluding it with a record of 6-9. Their team “tradition” was to always make fun of everybody and everything. Following this tradition, one of the senior boys, Luis, always had to be reminded, “Run with your legs - not with your feet.” They would like to wish good luck and a winning season next year to Mr. O’Rourke and the rest of the team. 1. “They're off! 2. Melissa, Cheryl, Katie, Kari, Theonne, Allison, Sylvana, Parvine, Nikki, and Joanne spent many dedicated hours practicing at the West Hartford Reservoir by the light of Parvine’s reflectors, resulting in, disappointingly, a losing season. Even though they were not exposed to the outdoor elements, running tights were often worn by Lou Matt, much to the other runners’ dismay. This dedicated group of guys put a great amount of effort into their meets and were quite frustrated when there was a delay in the results as many often said, “When will we get the meet results? Next year, maybe?”. The team considered ‘aerodynamic hairstyles”, and worried about their phobias, including “frightening toes”, size 13 feet. “They were a crazy-go-nuts team, fer sure!” 1. Team 2. One of these problems took place when the gymnasts practiced. The V-ball players thought the gymnasts were putting on a private show for them and felt they should watch. Coach didn’t agree! Things began to run smoothly after coach told them to warm up. This consisted of bumps, sets, and spikes. The players loved Chris, but they missed SM, CL, LF, RK, and AB. They wish to thank their coach who constantly reminded them of the phrase: “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.” 1. J. Eliason 2. C. Layton 3. J. Wallace 4. But they had the little boys too: Cheese (W.B.R.), Rogor, Smitty, and Booch. Placed last on the pre-season poll, the team considered this a “building” year. And build they did! As for Irene and Beth, they will go on, but their memories will remain. They'll never forget Chuck E. Reflected in their record equipment setup and clean-up times, (up in 17; down in 7) the girls strived for perfection, keeping their bellies up and struggling to stay on the beam. Not only were they successful, but they even had a good time at their games. They liked playing South Catholic so much that they always asked Coach C, a “smooth operator”, if it were possible to play them again. One spectacular game that provoked many locker room chats was Newington vs. Windsor. Also, their scrap with New Britain will never be forgotten. Phrases like, “Hit the rock,” and, “Ya gahn! originated from these games. A common question amongst Shebop, G, Dingl Dingle, “E”, Clarrk, Gila, Oilcun, Ella, Barkley, and Scud developed about the crash between Condon and Benny. They all asked each other who won. After their away games, the team always wanted Ella to drive the bus because he knew that the pizza parlor was only a few blooks away. The seniors on the team, Brian Hed-strom, Mike Kapij, and Tom Stack, provided a strong backbone for a well-developed team. Practices were held at the Indian Hill Golf Course. At times the players were a bit confused as to exactly which fairway they were on or what the par was on a specific hole. But the team knew that they had a tough act to follow. Hardworking seniors: Bill, John, Luis, Mike, Rob, Sean and Steve made their practices memorable - including hard fought battles of frisbee football, dynamic hurdlers, lightning fast sprinters, high-fling long jumpers, herculean shot putters, the unknown pole vaulter and all 6 or 7 of their loyal fans. “Thanks Kevin and Todd for your time and patience.” 1 2 3 4 1. Their coach wasn’t too tough (250 push-ups in the mud in 20 degree weather is reasonable). Equipment was always everyone’s main concern. They NEVER lost anything. They also had a strange breed called “throwers”. No one was able to figure out what they were, but they’re working on it. They also were very dedicated - during April vacation, since one person went to Florida, three fourths of the team went along with her (just so they’d be together). Kath, Beck, Sue-Sue, Mel 3. Muskrat, Herdo, Bob, Dan, Capt. 4. George F, John, Schmed, Ted 210 Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture the strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. - Max Ehrmann Compliments Of - STEVE'S PLACE Douglas Kuzoian, Prop. 211 PARTS MART INC. We have attempted, as does a newspaper, to recreate the prominent events of your years at Newington High School. We feel that in years to come, the yearbook will act as a window to the past, enabling you to view and remember the various scenes of triumph and failure as if they had occurred only yesterday. ►
