On Halloween night, members took children from the Regional Center trick or treating around town. A Fall Festival was held in November, and baked goods were sold, with the pro- ceeds going to the annual food drive for needy families in Newington. In December, members organized a student Christmas card mailing service and sold candy canes to spread holiday spirit. The National Honor Society spreads good will throughout the year. ROW 7: S. The group was opened up to include many new members, which resulted in successful planning of activities, increased student awareness of the workings of a school and their place in it, and a greater social awareness. Despite minor difficulties in its operations, many successful activities resulted. The Homecoming Dance, which should become an annual event, and a Valentine mail service for students, were made possible. It is hoped that the student council will continue as an active, spirited group for many years! CHANGES BRING UNITY 115 SENIORITY SETS IN The Class of 77 started their final year with images of the Senior Ball and graduation floating through their minds. Their bubbles were quickly popped, however, when they realized all the work ahead. After an extremely successful magazine drive, work was started on the Senior Ball. The class has worked hard these last four years, but it was all worth it. Their very successful fall bake sale brought in a substantial profit, as did the combined Freshman-Sophomore Pancake Breakfast and Pizza Dinner. The First Annual Sophomore Dance was also a tremendous success and enjoyed by everyone. The sophomore class now hopes for a successful and exciting Junior Prom. CONFUSED FRESHMEN COME THROUGH The Class of 1980 started out its year as any other freshman class does — in a state of total confusion. The eternal questions such as Where is the money? , Do we have any homeroom representatives? , and Does anyone have any suggestions? came up at their early meetings. But the ever-faithful bake sales got the class of '80 off to a good start. Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a freshman ... 117 D. Salmari, J. Kehoe, B. Block, D. Summa, M. Hernandez, C. Although the group derives its members from the high school, school activities are not their primary concern. Under supervision of Parks and Recreations director. Bob Stanley, the group has helped bring activities to the town, such as their annual Halloween party at the Hartford Regional Center. The group, which is also responsible for the organization of Saturday night dances, will never forget the dance Fox Fire played at. The Chicken Heart Story and the cry When is the banquet? will long resound in members' minds. 118 BOARD REPRESENTS US The Student Board of Education is a voluntary association presently consisting of twenty members. It is open to any upper or lower classman interested in having a say about what is directed to the student body from the administration. The accomplishments of the Board are made in conjunction with monthly meetings with the school superintendent, Mr. William P. Ward. This is in addition to their bi-weekly meetings. The Student Board also meets with the Senior Board of Education to air grievances and give suggestions four times a year, based on members' contact with the different student bodies of the school system. They run a mock town, city, and state government. The participants will never forget the perils of watching late night television at the cadet's lounge, belly dancing, Ma' name's Baabra , and frequent arrests and court cases for such major offenses as not pushing the elevator button with your nose. It was some week! OPERATION: FACELIFT Scribe, our beloved school newspaper, was given a slight facelifting this year. Through the cooperative efforts of our Dicta-tor-in-Chief, staff, and advisor Tony G., we attempted to publish a good-looking journilistically sound, and informative paper which the entire student body would enjoy, free of charge. Upholding freedom of the press was our credo and we lived up to it for the most part. Neither ads, nor gnawing deadlines, nor pasteups deterred us in bringing Scribe to the students every month. A sometimes thankless task it was, with light moments here and there, crowned with the sweet smell of achievement. ROW 1: C. Sinatra, R. Reale, T. Mattorocci, ROW 2:). Namnoum, B. Meade, S. Established by NHS's Principal, Mr. Herb Sheppard, the group consists of students from all four grades who meet every other week. Its main purpose is to bring many different opinions about controversial matters to the attention of the administration. 121 AND THE BEAT GOES ON . . . Practicing every Tuesday and Thursday to the sounds of many different drummers, the Marching Band and Flag Corps prepare for home football games. Under the direction of Flag Corps captain Merryl Turkowitz, Drum Major Mary Westgate, and General Mills, the groups polish their marching and maneuvuring. The overall result is an infinite variety of dynamics and color. The orchestra has traveled to Bermuda, Quebec, and Washington D.C., receiving numerous medals for their participation in international competition. Butch Sinatra and Patty O'Sullivan CONCERT BAND ASPIRING MUSICIANS The Concert Band, consisting of many instrumentalists, practices in the band room every seventh period under the direction of Mr. John Mills. In the fall, the band dons uniforms of blue and gold and, combined with the Symphonic Band, becomes the Newington High School Marching Band and Flag Corps. 123 VERSATILE AND SELECT The Chamber Orchestra, consisting of approximately twenty-five selected members from the symphony orchestra, uses a variety of shadings and detailed workmanship to create a strong contrapuntal style. This instrumental en- semble has toured Bermuda, Washington D.C., and Quebec, performing works from the classical to the contemporary. JAZZ GROUP ADDS SPIRIT The NHS Jazz Ensemble, led by Mr. John Mills, adds a spirited beat to the music department. This versatile group participates in the Berklee Jazz Festival, holds an annual Swing into Spring dance, and performs at the NHS Variety Shows. 124 SYMPHONIC BAND TRAVELS The Symphonic Band, directed by Mr. John Mills, is a group of talented people involved in music in many ways. First and foremost, they must audition in order to play with the group. The band practices their pieces, which range from classical to modern, every day. Their travels have taken them from Canada to Washington, where they received a bronze medal for their performance. These people are accomplished, both individually and as a group. Remembering previous trips to Canada and Washington, the group plans an exchange concert with an Atlantic City High School. 126 CLUB OPENS DOORS Consisting of nine boys and two girls, the Key Club of Newington High School is a service organization for the school and community. Under the direction of its advisor, Mr. Ruggiero, the club serves the community in many ways. The turkey baskets distributed at Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Christmas Toy Drive for children, and the raking of leaves for the elderly in the fall are some of the successful projects sponsored by the Key Club. Their main goal is to better the community. BOY, CAN THEY MULTIPLY This year's Math League consists of 25 students who participate in monthly contests involving various aspects of math. With their school advisors Mrs. Bannon and Mrs. VanDeuser guiding them, the NHS team attends an annual banquet where recognition and awards are given to those individuals and schools who hold the top positions. 127 DARKROOM TECHNIQUES WORK How many people can you fit into a darkroom at once? It is a non-profit, nonpolitical, school-centered organization. A totally youth-oriented group, its purpose is to develop future leaders for marketing and distribution. Their activities include the operating of the school store and various fund raisers. DECA also enters many competitions throughout the year. Some of the competitions that were attended were the Narcon convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, area and state conventions, and a national convention in California. At these conventions members compete in different events such as advertising, job interviews, displays, shadow box, manuals, and other job-oriented qualifications. HOT OFF THE PRESSES Did you ever sit down and wonder where our great No Exit signs come from? Well, the answer has finally arrived! It's the Graphic Arts Club. In case you're wondering just what the graphic arts club is, they are a group of students, headed by Mr. Bajek, who are responsible for such things as printing tickets for various activities and fund-raising projects. FRENCH CLUB MAKES RAPID COMEBACK Bonjour! After being out of the picture for a few years, the French Club has recently made a great comeback. Led by Mr. Maggiora and Mrs. Pepin, the group is working on many activities. The highlight of the year for the club will be a trip to Canada. They have been busy raising funds for that purpose. Other trips were to the Hartford Stage Co. to see a French play and out to eat at an authentic French restaurant. They started a new tradition for future French clubs to continue: handing out cupcakes to the teachers at Christmas time. Bonne Chance Notres Amis! AFS - LINKING US WITH OTHER NATIONS American Field Service (AFS) is a club which has become a very active group at Newington High. It has successfully combined profitmaking and fun. This is not always the easiest thing to do, but the rewards of being able to meet people from all over the world, and especially having someone to stay in the community, makes it totally worthwhile. While the forty students who belong to this club have discovered the art of running a successful money-making project, they have much more importantly discovered the art of turning work into fun. The group plans a spring trip to New York City, with fund- raising activities such as a car wash and a bake sale, hopefully paying for the excursion. 131 M. Neiman, B. Sack, P. Scrivano, L. This year's officers are: Sue Connolly, president; MaryLynn Kinney, vice president; Eileen Dumeer, treasurer; and Janet Uccello, secretary. The girls work hard, but enjoy it. SYNCHRO IN TOP FORM 133 WE DID IT! The Sequin staff of 1977 wanted something different, something special, and we set our goals from that first day at the Josten's Amer-ican Yearbook Company seminar. After all, who can pass up loads of good food? After finally deciding who does what, and where it's done, (the office had been moved three times) we set up business in the executive suite. We grew increasingly inspired as the results of our endeavors started appearing. February 10th marked a great triumph as we added the finishing touches and sent the book to print. It was a tough game with a final score of 3-1. The Bloomfield game will long be remembered by the team. Bloomfield scored two goals to take an early lead in the game. Then Newington came back and scored 5 consecutive goals to win 5-2. The team's seasonal record was 7-7 with a 0-1 tournament record. 1i8 M. Rogers, J. Although there seemed to be a mutual dislike of those laps around the field, the girls, led by co-captains Sandy Schaller and Mary Ann Colandro, worked diligently to become a real team. Braving the rain, the cold, the wind, and those small puddles which threatened to flood the whole field, the team was encouraged along the way by their coach, Mr. Davidson, with his favorite words, I've got some good news and some bad news. With the everpresent support of their mascot, Soccertes, the girls were always ready and eager to face an opponent. The season proved productive, evidenced by the development of a straggly group into a well coordinated, effective soccer team. ROW 1: L. Cyr, M. Brennan, M. Colandro, S. Schaller, C. Sliksbier, K. The girls' team which started with ten people, ended with only 5 regular members. In contrast to other team sports, five members is the least you need for competition in cross country, so Newington could compete and did. Led by the five captains John Aiello, Dave Page, Jim Parry, Doug Malinowski, and Charlie Sykes, the Indians came from behind to beat Wethersfield in a nerve-racking game. Opening the season with four losses in a row, Newington launched their comeback with an impressive win over Windsor Locks and then with South Windsor, Bloomfield, Windsor, South Catholic, and Wethersfield all falling in the hands of defeat to the Indians. The team showed great pride and courage and most of all they kept together as a full unit and played through to a winning season. The Indians ended the 1976 season with a 6-4 record. Coach John Ludko, Coach Larry Marsh, Coach John Balducci Coach Balducci 1 146 Coach Marsh 147 D'ANTONIO AND BERGLUND LEAD TEAM TO The Boys' Cross Country Team this year had an excellent season with an overall record of eight wins and two losses, and a CVC record of four wins and two losses. Led by Coach Frank O'Rourke and captain Paul D'An-tonio, the team members put forth a tremendous effort, but were unsuccessful in capturing the CVC Championship, losing to a tough Rockville team. The strong running of senior Mark Berglund gave Newington first place in almost every meet, with captain Paul D'Antonio acting as strong number two runner. P. D'Antonio, D. Boehm, M. The Newington High School Cheerleaders are lively, energetic girls who take pride in the sports at NHS. Their efforts are a big boost to all our teams. But they are seen not only supporting the teams, but also raising money by selling calendars and candy to purchase new uniforms. Captain Lisa DaMonte, co-cap-tains Ann Melly and Carol Mag-noli, along with the rest of the squad are dedicated sports enthusiasts. They will always remember the “deformed megaphone, meeting new people, and wild bus rides to away games. Through their pep and spirit, many teams were cheered on to difficult victories. ROW 1: L. Magnoli CARING COUNTS MOST Co-captains Pam Sykes and Anne Balicki led this year's Girls' Swim Team to a 5-5-1 season. This is commendable considering the changes that took place in the team. Two new coaches, Miss Bonnie Hittleman and Bob Glass, a new division, and stiffer competition have all been factors. With all of these changes, the feeling of team unity and closeness has remained. Every girl has a special feeling for the other girls on the team. When a swimmer does her best time or a diver does well, everyone is there to congratulate her. This capacity for caring is the most important ingredient for a successful team, and is found on this year's girls' swim team. A. Shurberg B. Glass, P. Sykes Mrs. Morley, Miss Hittleman, P. Sykes, A. S. Goodrich Petrozzi 152 153 A GREAT SETUP WORKS! The Girls' Volleyball Team, led by Coach Eckersley and Captain Pat Kingsbury, succeeded in reaching the State Tournaments this year. Showing skill and devotion, the team placed fourth. The highlights of the season, the matches against Pulaski, were exciting as well as gratifying. One away match was the longest match played this year, lasting two hours. When first seeing the height of their opponents, the girls felt their chances were slim; but the team made a fine effort and won the first and third games. The home game against Pulaski was just as impressive. Pulaski won the first game, but Newington came back to win the second and third. Being one of the finest teams around, their overall record was eleven wins and seven losses. 154 Sue Giansante Suzanne Combes 155 ROW 1: M. Walker, V. Westberry, P Kingsbury, S. Ciansante, S. The Girls' Field Hockey team is a very young one this year, with only two returning seniors, cocaptains Lisa Impellusoand Jeanne Wotjowicz. With all the hard work, dedication, and practice, the girls learned to work together to become a team. In the process, the vampires became very close. Oftentimes during practices the team would develop a southern accent and could be seen talking to doorknobs and light switches. The effort of their coach Miss Karen Erlandson and the entire squad made the season a great one with a 4-6-1 record. Coach Erlandson 156 ROW 1: M. Deconti, N. Leggo, J. Wojtowicz, L. Impelluso, S. Sectionals, and placed second. At the sectionals. Sophomore Steven Rowland took a silver medal on the rings and Junior Co-captain Steve Malinowski took a bronze on the high bar and a silver in the all-around. Senior captain John Montano took a bronze on the parallel bars and a gold on the high bar. Without any serious injuries, the team showed consistent improvement throughout the season, particularly freshmen Mike Jordan and Mike Pelton. With these two freshmen and the other hard-working members of the gymnastics team, the 78 season looks like a good one for the boys and their head coach, Mr. Costas Constantine. Even though we horse around and may be found hitting the bars (at 3:00 in the afternoon?), we all beam with pride to be members of the NHS Girls' Gymnastics Team. Whether we're gettin' down to music or gettin' down to the floor we're always up on top when meet time comes around. We'll remember Miss Halb's first season, aerobic dancing, Pan, Boney, Barrel, Pea, Pin, Pail ... what rhymes with Beverly?! We won't forget our false securities, mental blocks and You little chicken! The returning seniors, co-captains Tom Cassell and Charlie Sykes, play very emotionally and give all the defensive hustle needed. Charlie, the big man on the team, is also the top rebounder. Tom is the second leading scorer and rebounder and the top assist man. As Coach King puts it, The two boys are great co-captains and great leaders. Although the season opened with some disappointing losses, the team is hoping for a successful turnabout such as their first win against Conard. The team's spirit will keep the ball bouncing! Paced by point performances of departing seniors Mary Ann Co-landro, Pam Sykes, Shirin Khan, and Sandy Schaller, the NHS Girls' Varsity Basketball team routed Rockville 62-27, despite worries over MaryAnn's problem, a situation which may have cramped their style. Leading by 20 points at the half, the team boogied into the locker room to the tune of Sweet Georgia Brown , led by the overjoyed trio of Boom, 'Fro, and Dip. Coaches Turner and Slack (together again) commented on their appearance in the new warm-ups and instead of game films, they provided entertainment with Gidget Goes to Pakistan . Starting the season strongly, the Indians broke two records at the Bul-keley Relays. Led by the cry of Savior-faire is everywhere , the team, under the leadership of Coach Bill Davidson, proved itself a worthy adversary in the CVC. The combined efforts of seniors Mark Lang and Brad Edge, Juniors Pete Tozer and Steve Buden, and sophomore Brett Rajotte helped the team to victory. The successful diving escapades of the Malinowski brothers, Doug, Steve, and Ed were also a boost to morale. With many returning underclassmen, next year's team shows much promise. On any winter afternoon, one must beware when entering the third floor. This is Indoor Track territory! Starting at 3:00, the team, led by Brian Boorman and David Boehm, do their two-mile warm ups. The seniors are Bob Potter, 600 yard run man; Mark Berglund, runner of the one and two-mile races; Brian Boorman, the 60 yard high hurdler; and Dave Boehm, a 1000 yard runner. They all agree that the team will lose their best talent when the class of 1977 graduates. Ironically, all of the home'' games are held at the West Hartford Armory. The Indoor Track team is always on the move traveling to both their home and away meets. Could you keep track of them? 168 BATTER UP The Boys' Varsity Baseball team plans a very promising season this year. Along with coaches Robert Petrovic and Robert Davis, six seniors, John Aiello, Tom Cassell, Vin Donato, Doug Kuzoian, Mark Rinaldi, and Don Sullo return this year. Private jokes get passed around the field as much as the ball with favorites such as, How would you like a 36 inch bat? , What are you going to do with that mask? , or Chicken salad, but out of ... ? During the course of a year, Newington gets together with Cape Elizabeth, Maine for a weekend of baseball. Parties, a dance, and more parties are on the schedule. Last year's record of 6-9 was a hard fought for record. Playing Rockville, undefeated and ranked first in the CVC certainly was tough, but Newington defeated them 10-4. Every individual had their own outstanding achievements, but John Aiello, Vin Donato, Doug Kuzoian and Mark Rinaldi made AII-CVC, a great accomplishment. ROW 7 B. Donahue, R. Womer, D. Horan, ). For the past two years the team has been CVC Champs and they hope to gain that title once again this year. Arch-rival, Glastonbury, is to be run into the ground this spring through hard team work and those 3rd floor practices. The girls are looking forward tp more rowdie bus rides, a lot of hard work, and a great time. 17« 175 Sandy Schaller GOAL: UNDEFEATED SEASON This year's Boys' Track Team, led by tri-captains Dave Boehm, Brian Boorman, and Mark Berg-lund, has high hopes for a successful year. Although it will be difficult to top last year's record of 9-1, the combination of returning members and new talent has the capability of achieving an undefeated season. Memories of last year's silent clapping and finger lifts will be heightened by the prospect of a new field house. Dan Wartschow Paul D'Elia LOVE MEANS NEVER HAVING This year's Tennis Team looks strong and competitive with all but two of the varsity players returning. The two seniors on this year's team are captain Tom Mat-tarocci and Mark Pertrozzi, while the bulk of the team is composed of underclassmen. Matching uniforms are new additions on the team. Coach Ludlow purchased them, creating a first for the team. This element of matching uniforms, however, does not make a team. It's hard work that results in a successful season. Having the spirit and the talent, the team is looking for a victorious season. 178 Mark Petrozzi Mike Rogers TO SAY YOU'RE SORRY Coach Ludlow T. Mattarocci Sue Giansante M. Colandro, T. Being only the third year as a varsity sport, there are many advantages. One is the fact that in a total of two years, only four girls have been lost to graduation. The team started with the majority of players being underclassmen. It also began without uniforms, which meant they had to improvise. But last year, the stenciled t-shirts and baseball caps gave way to new uniforms and jackets. Last year had other vast improvements, with an 8-6 record, and giving the team a berth in a state tournament game. Another accomplishment was that NHS beat every team in the CVC at least once, with the exception of Glastonbury, which was lost by one run each time. Coach Eckersley is looking for another season of excitement, still more improvements, and a return of experience to the team. Olga Tartaglia Coach Eckersley, ROW 7 O Tartagua, C. Magnoli, G. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture the strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful.
