Jim Mclly, Harris Swanson. Marilyn Strecler. Sandy Sprague. Jim Ferraris. Dan Michalak Laurel Girls’ State Nutmeg Boys’ State Chosen by faculty members on the basis of leadership and scholarship, Jim Ferraris, Jim Melly, Dan Michelak and Harris Swanson represented N.H.S. at Nutmeg Boys’ State. Sandy Sprague and Marilyn Streeter were representatives for Laurel Girls’ State. This week long program in politics, held at the University of Connecticut, gave preliminary training and practical experience to Connecticut's future leaders. By attending lectures, primaries and elections and joining a political party they learned the various aspects of state and local governments. The highlight of the week was the Inaugural Ball which perfectly ended the program.

DAR Recipient The 1970 recipient of the Good Citizenship Award, going to an outstanding girl of the senior class, was Chris Hannifan. She was chosen for her qualities of dependability, leadership, patriotism. and service. In school, Chris participated in Student Council, G.A.A., Pep Club, and was Homeroom Captain for the Magazine Drive. Her outside school activities included C.Y.O. and being sec.-treas. of the Newington Youth Council.
