The distant rumble of an intercom. A bell rings, and students flow around me; Earnest bespectacled, laden with books. Some to public notice and others quiet as they serve. But some minds and hearts are of stone for they are the apathetic Yet to live may be to dissent for only through protest can they be recognized. Some trudging down the hall, carefree and confident. A bell rings and the corridor becomes filled with the sound of learning. 1 enter the classroom of my memory Where I have read the lines of Shakespeare and known a reverence for wisdom. Where I've felt the breath-easy security from passing in a term paper or experienced the exuberance upon receiving an A. I’ve felt embarrassment from asking a seemingly foolish question or the pride and childish joy in victory and success. Moments and feelings I have known Will take a step backwards From the present to the past; For, when times are changing, Only our memories remain the same . . . 1'iimmr Silence fills the empty hall 1 stand, and in my reverie 1 hear the slam of a solitary locker. These years dangled before our eyes visions of excitement and sadness, wisdom and folly. As much as we strove to be independent. we depended on others to help pull us through difficult, serious, or ecstatic times. It is with these thoughts in mind that we. the members of the Class of’70. dedicated our yearbook to Miss Harriel King in deep appreciation for her strength, kindness, humor, and wisdom. We hoped that in some small way Sequin ’70 expressed our sincere thanks and cherished memories. There existed the chill bleakness of a winter's twilight when we were dismissed at five-fourteen. Junior Class Officers: Pal Whitney, social chairman Sue Jones, secretary Carol Chudzik. vice-president Cindy Armstrong, treasurer Felix Sarubbi, president Most of us were confident we could move mountains, if somebody would clear the foothills out of our way. We learned that there were three kinds of people: those who made things happen; those who watched things happen; and those who had no idea what happened. 19 Paula Vance, Lynn Arnold, Alison Lindsay, Sue Jones, Carol Chudzik, Pat Whitney, Felix Sarubbi. John Soderherg 24 My year as exchange student in Newington has contributed much to my knowledge of this country as well as my understanding. I realized that this world is but one home containing all kinds of people wherever one may go. Above all I should like to thank all of you for the efforts and sacrifices you made to make my stay here successful. Thank you very much. s John Mark To be transferred from American society to a completely different far Eastern one can be quite astounding. This situation, which I found myself in last summer, was the greatest experience of my life. My months in the Philippines were ones of meeting, learning, and understanding new people, things, and attitudes. To Newington students and sponsors, I am extremely grateful. If more of us were as lucky to travel, maybe we could learn to walk together, talk together, give a damn about our fellow man, and consider ourselves not citizens of any one country, but citizens of the world. DAR Recipient The 1970 recipient of the Good Citizenship Award, going to an outstanding girl of the senior class, was Chris Hannifan. Typing Editor Joyce Muisener Typing Editor Germaine Parent Business Manager Marilyn Streeter Business Manager Dick Bailey 286 Time is a peculiar concept to understand. While thinking in terms of the present, time soars forward to the future. This constant progression of time leaves us with a past which is definite and sure; it is only the past which provides our memories with substance. Our years at N.H.S. have left us all with thoughts and remembrances. Thus, it has been the aim of Sequin ’70 to capture these abstractions and create a meaningful, lasting book. Prepared through the efforts of a diversified selection of students, our book endeavors to please all to some extent. However, as we intended our book also to be a work of art, many new techniques and methods have been incorporated in Sequin ’70 to render it a truly distinctive annual. Special thanks go out to Mrs. McGloin and Miss Rucinski along with Brian and Mare, for their part in raising the finances; Joyce and Germaine and their staff who typed our material; Marge and Sandy and their staff who designed our book; Laurie who created the cover design; Joan and Harris for efforts in our planning; Willy and Marcia who scheduled pictures and helped in everything; Dickie and Mare who kept our books and composure; Gill and Lynnie without whom our book wouldn't be; Mr. Catani who took pictures, and took them . . . and took them; and most assuredly to Miss Santacroce and Mrs. Erlandson who “really” knew what was happening. Editor-in-Chief
