Early in March, students, faculty, and indeed the entire population of Newington was overcome with grief as the news of the death of our Principal, Mr. Bowes, was made public. Who will ever forget the assembly at which the entire school came to a standstill in remembrance, and everyone prayed for the soul of our deceased Principal? Mr. Bourque took over as acting principal and guided us through the remainder of the year. In the spring of that year, Patty Collins was chosen to be our A.F.S. representative in Spain. 24

Now we had become Juniors. After the first realization of our newly acquired positions wore off, it became time to elect our junior officers. Nilus McAndrew became our President; and under him Jim Chesney, Pat Collins, Janet Wolf, and Nancy Hancock served as Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Social Chairman, respectively. The foreign exchange student at Newington High that year, as you recall, was Grade Moyano from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her expressive eyes, warm smile, and cheerful disposition made her a welcome member to our student body. Early in the year the third event sponsored by our class was held in the form of a fund raising dance. 23

On May 20, our biggest social event of the year took place, as dozens of starry-eyed couples took part in the festivities of the annual Junior Prom. Dancing to the music of Richard Linson and Orchestra, under a canopy of stars accented by Moonlight and Roses, everyone had a memorable time. Pat Collins and Nilus McAndrew were chosen King and Queen, attended by a court of five couples. 25
