Sequin Nineteen Sixty-Seven Newington High School When we entered the halls of N.H.S. as sophomores, we were in the dark as to what would result from the years we would be spending here. Then, as we took part in classes and activities, we began to see the light. Now as Seniors we face the future wi.th open eyes and eager hearts. SEABOURNE Guidance Office In September, 1964, the Class of '67 entered the halls of N.H.S. as a confused and rather boisterous group of sophomores to begin a new chapter in their lives. We were to make lasting friends and have innumerable and unforgettable experiences. After a few weeks we overcame our shyness and it became easier to find our way through the crowded halls. After surmounting this first problem, we faced our first official act as a class. We had to elect responsible people to our class offices. This first year would be an important one and whether it would be successful or not would be determined by the leaders that we would choose. The election results were as follows: Gene Bourquin—President: Mildred Zeldes—Vice President; Barbara Desmond—Secretary: Janet Wolf—Treasurer; and Claire Barrows— Social Chairman. 20 Perhaps some of us remember Ahmet Erkal, the foreign exchange student that year from Manisa, Turkey. He came to Newington High School thanks to the American Field Service, which grants students the opportunity to study abroad. The first event sponsored by the Class of '67 was the Sophomore Hop, which was held in October. Since this dance was worked out and presented by the students themselves, it served to bring us closer together and to distinguish us as a class. 21 Now we had become Juniors. After the first realization of our newly acquired positions wore off, it became time to elect our junior officers. Nilus McAndrew became our President; and under him Jim Chesney, Pat Collins, Janet Wolf, and Nancy Hancock served as Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Social Chairman, respectively. The foreign exchange student at Newington High that year, as you recall, was Grade Moyano from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her expressive eyes, warm smile, and cheerful disposition made her a welcome member to our student body. Early in the year the third event sponsored by our class was held in the form of a fund raising dance. 23 Early in March, students, faculty, and indeed the entire population of Newington was overcome with grief as the news of the death of our Principal, Mr. Bowes, was made public. Who will ever forget the assembly at which the entire school came to a standstill in remembrance, and everyone prayed for the soul of our deceased Principal? Mr. Bourque took over as acting principal and guided us through the remainder of the year. In the spring of that year, Patty Collins was chosen to be our A.F.S. representative in Spain. 24 On May 20, our biggest social event of the year took place, as dozens of starry-eyed couples took part in the festivities of the annual Junior Prom. Dancing to the music of Richard Linson and Orchestra, under a canopy of stars accented by Moonlight and Roses, everyone had a memorable time. Pat Collins and Nilus McAndrew were chosen King and Queen, attended by a court of five couples. 25 R. Janson, J. Johnson, J. Wolf, P. Collins, E. Bourquin Now we were Seniors, and we were anxious to behold what our final year at N.H.S. had in store for us. In late September we elected our Senior officers. Roger Janson took over as President, Gene Bourquin became Vice-President, and Patty Collins and Janet Wolf retained their offices as Secretary and Treasurer, with Jean Johnson as Social Chairman. The first dance of the year, the Charles A. Bowes Scholarship Fund Dance, sponsored by the Student Council, took place. In honor of this special activity, The Latins volunteered their services, and everyone had an enjoyable evening. 27 “Be to the Darkened World a Flame.’ - Untermeyer 29 Dean Anderson Dino . . . popular school organist . . . also plays piano, guitar, and tympani . . . enjoys skin-diving and boating. Throughout our three years at N.H.S. Miss Davis, as class adviser, has given most generously of her time for the betterment of our class, and has taken an active part in every event sponsored by the Class of '67. For your devotion and service, Miss Davis, we thank you! “What in me is dark . . . illumine. - Milton 105 Also in the fall we held a Sports Rally, at which the students were acquainted with the various fall-sports teams. Captains: Marsha and Gen© The annual magazine drive started off with a bang. Several seniors reached their quotas that first weekend, as they strove to achieve top sales and homeroom recognition. This year the senior class did better than did any previous year. We exceeded our class quota by more than $2,000.00, a fact every member of the Class of '67 can be proud of. Bruce Mortensen, Jim Chesney, Bob Prentice, and Peter Buckingham walked off with the top prizes; Shirley Kircheis was the winner of the $50 drawing. On November third we had our magazine party at which senior class members provided entertainment. Thanks to the American Field Service, the Class of '67 had the privilege of having as one of its members Teodore Oliveros from the Philippines. Teddy, as she became known to her classmates, became an indispensable part of the senior class. 107 Magazine Drive Homeroom Captains Claire Barrows with Mrs. Hathaway Dave Merrill with Mr. Ashton As the fall came to a close, we began to think of our future plans, and thanks to the helpful advice of Mr. Ashton and Mrs. Hathaway, we all were able to find a school or organization that suited our needs. These special events will forever remain highest in our memories, but our senior year consisted of much more. Everyday occurrences also have some significance on the make-up of a class, as we will realize as we look back upon the classes, sports, and activities that made up our senior year at N.H.S. 108 D.A.R. Recipient Each year the Daughters of the American Revolution honors one girl in its area with the DAR Good Citizenship Award. This year the Newington Chapter has named Barbara Desmond the recipient of the award based on her qualities of dependability, leadership, patriotism, and scholarship. Barbara has been given a pin signifying her award and in the spring she will meet all the Connecticut DAR recipients at,a tea where the one state recipient will be named. Barbara is a most active member of many school clubs and is President of the Student Council. She has also attended Laurel Girls' State. She is a credit both to her school and to her community and is most deserving of this honor. Barbara Desmond 109 “Let such deep hours not fade with the day.” - Benfet in APPLIED MATH First Row: T. The group meets during activity periods only two days a week, so the members must put extra effort into their rehearsals, which are expertly directed by Mr. Lenoce. The concert choir performs in most of the school concerts. Pleasure, fulfillment, and experience are received by all its members. 117 Choir Come on, people, work! Feet on the floor, sit up straight. Take thirty. These are familiar sayings to any member of choir, which is probably the most popular course at Newington High. Choir meets three times a week, and its members receive a half credit toward graduation. Under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Lenoce, the choir performs at the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Memorial Day assemblies and also at graduation. The members of choir work especially hard during the year in preparation for the annual Christmas and spring concerts. The week before the concerts is filled with rehearsals in class, during activities, and at night. After the concerts, it has become a tradition for a member of 118 the choir to hold an open house, looked forward to by all. In the spring the band and orchestra present a major program with the choir. The band comprises forty-two members and the orchestra seventeen. The purpose of the Dramatic Club is to develop interest and appreciation in the dramatic arts and literature. The club seeks to provide all members with a chance to participate in the year's activities and to entertain its audiences. Membership consists of sophomores, juniors, and seniors with interest, ability, and potential. Under the guidance of Mr. Hall, adviser, the Dramatic Club took on such projects as a Film Festival, consisting of popular films no longer offered in theaters or on television, which were shown monthly for five months beginning in November for a small admission price. Also, a Fine Arts bulletin was published listing the 130 dramatic presentations in the area for those interested in attending. For the Christmas Program, an adaptation of Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas In Wales was produced by the club. In the spring, A Thurber Carnival was staged. This year proved to be a very successful one for the Newington High School Dramatic Club. The Chess Club of Newington High School is the focal point of the age-old, timeless game of Chess. Anyone with an interest in Chess is eligible for membership in the club. Knowledge of the game is not a prerequisite, since the chief aim of the club is to promote interest in Chess and Newington High. The activities of the Chess Club include intra-club tournaments with an over-all winner proclaimed the champion and interscholastic meets with other schools. President: Jack Greenshields Secretary: Bruce Mortensen Treasurer: Robert Alexander Recorder: Dave Merrill Adviser: Mr. Melvin R. Parrette 132 The Auditorium Committee renders services of administration in coordinating auditorium programs. It provides opportunities for its members to gain experience in programing and organizing public speaking. This club meets twice a month, or more often if heavy scheduling so demands. Most of the details of planning, however, are carried out by the individual members before or after school or during activities. Some of these duties are: selection of programs, meeting and introducing guest speakers, correspondence, and close work with A.V.E.S. The club's membership consists of two members from each class and is consequently on a selective basis. 133 Row I: F. Leiber. M. Zeldes. Row 2: P. Fisher. C. Webb, L. Braithwaite, P. Knight. The club sponsors various fund-raising activities throughout the year, including the sale of art supplies. The club's members engage in both novice and varsity debates with other schools in the Greater Hartford area in addition to debates within the club. Highlighting each year are the tournaments which are held in the spring. These consist of three Greater Hartford Conference tournaments and statewide toOrnaments held at Wesleyan College, Trinity College, Central Connecticut State College, and the University of Connecticut. During the past few years, our debate teams have put Newington High in the position of one of the top teams in the Greater Hartford area. 135 Row I: L. Belas, M. McGuiness, Row 2: M. Moser, A. Suggestions from both the student body and the faculty are welcomed. The major part of the Student Council work is-car-ried on in the committees. All members must participate in at least three committees which hold meetings during the week. Reports are made by the committees to the council as a whole, on each Tuesday, All regular meetings are conducted according to parliamentary procedure. Membership consists of one representative and one alternate from each homeroom at the beginning of the school year. The four Council officers are elected in the spring of the previous school year. Under their new advisor, Mr. Flynn, this year's Council has begun some new projects such as a Holly Ball during the Christmas season, and a school supplies store. The Student Council is affiliated with the Connecticut Association of Student Councils and the National Association of Student Councils, and participates actively in the various workshops and conferences of these organizations. The members, who are primarily seniors, are selected on the basis of their outstanding ability and upon recommendations from their teachers. The club consists of four groups: the literary staff wrote articles on the various school functions and identified the many happy faces that appear within the pages of Sequin; the art staff created the cover and layout designs which were used throughout the yearbook; the business staff canvassed the area for advertisements, patrons, and friends; the typing staff recreated the scratchings of the literary staff to bring reading order out of chaos. The club had their meetings on Tuesdays, after school in room 201, with the exception of the Art Staff, which met in the art room. A yearbook should reflect the spirit of a class. The Sequin staff hopes that they have been able to put into words and pictures that special character which sets the Class of 1967 apart as an individual, unusual class. As a daughter of the Asua family, residing in Balboa, I lived and learned the Spanish way of life, which itself develops from the closely-knit family unit. Religion is an influential aspect of their slow-moving culture, as are their fiestas which are celebrations rooted in their religion. The fiestas manifest the happy character of a people as proud of their nationality and traditions as we are of our American heritage. Barriers are meant to be broken and our most powerful weapon is understanding, which I have learned. I can't find the words to express my gratitude to the student body and all the people of Newington who supported the AFS program and me as their representative to Spain. I can no more easily express all the benefits of such a rewarding experience. I do hope to share these with all who are interested and will listen. Men and women, old and young, students and graduates whom I met; from informal Hi's to formal How do you do's to assembly introductions; all make me feel at home. Here and there I find warm welcomes; helping hands whenever and wherever I am in need, and friendly smiles. I feel secure both at home with my family and outside with nice people. When I go home, I will go to the University of the Philippines, hoping to major in agricultural chemistry. I know I will occasionally live in the past when I go back, but how can I help it? These memories will be my inspiration to try hard and find a way back. For me to travel in a foreign country, like the United States, to live for one short year with new people, in a new environment, is wonderful; but what makes it more thrilling and wonderful is that I am here in Newington, Connecticut— which is but a tiny speck in the universe, but has lots to offer. A new chapter in my life has opened here; one that can never end. I thank you all. Teddy visits Newington 143 French Club The French Club consists of students in French III and French IV. Every other Friday a regular class period is turned into a club meeting. At this time the members have a chance to become acquainted with French culture and to gain facility in speaking French by listening to records, singing, and playing games, under the guidance of Mrs. Mara. Membership is open to juniors and seniors who have submitted some form of creative writing or have shown interest in joining the club. The club meets every first and third Monday of every month. The Editor-in-Chief, Roger Janson, presides over the meetings and the advisory duties are attended to by Mrs. Marion O'Donnell. The club publishes nine issues of Scribe during the year. Monthly features play the biggest role in the paper. Senior of the Month, the most notable feature, spotlights one boy and one girl from the senior class, each chosen on merit, achievement, and school spirit. The Athletic Spotlight is a column that places recognition on an individual who excels in one of the school's varsity sports. The editorial, the Shadow, and club reports are also included in the publication. Cartoons on various topics are to be found in every issue, thanks to the creativity of the Art Editor, Linda Tenukas. 148 Row I: W. Marshall, J. Wolf, P. Emard, M. Softer, R. Janson, E. Janson, H. Membership in this organization is limited to the upper fifteen per cent of the class, chosen at the end of the junior year. Members are admitted on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The objective of the Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate the desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the pupils. This is carried out through various service projects and a tutoring service available to all students. Meetings of the National Honor Society are held on the first and third Fridays of each month. Junior Red Cross The Newington High School Junior Red Cross is a long-established organization. It has maintained a fine record of service to the community and to the school. Some of the projects that have been carried out this year are the making of posters for the Veterans' Hospital and a call for volunteers to work at the Newington Center for Retarded Children. This year, for the first time, the club has set meetings for once a month. The members meet more frequently when they are involved in one of their service projects, such as the annual Red Cross Drive. The Junior Red Cross of Newington High School is affiliated with the New Britain Chapter of the American Red Cross. President: Jane Rames Vice-President: Crystal Wentland Adviser: Mrs. Mackimmie L. The club not only functions for the school, but for the whole town. Any and all equipment and operators are available when town affairs are held in the school. Under the guidance of Mrs.-O'Donnell, the members of the Library Club further their interests by helping fellow students in the library. The members give their time to library tasks during study and activity periods, as well as before and after school. They perform many of the routine duties such as shelving books, working at the charging desk, taking charge of magazines, filing book cards, and keeping books in order on the shelves. The purpose of this club is to vary assignments so as to investigate the different aspects of Roman life. Two elected consuls serve as leaders of the activities, similar to that of the Romans. In April, the group organizes its annual Latin Banquet. The members dress in togas and eat in Roman style. Entertainment is supplied by the different classes, which makes the event enjoyable and educational. This year the club hopes to formulate plans for a trip to Rome. The Welcome Teddy picnic honoring our AFS student, Teddy Oliveros from the Philippines, which was held at the home of President Millie Zeldes, ushered in this year's activities. In order to promote better understanding of the foreign policies of the United States and learn more about the countries and peoples of the world, the club invites foreign students attending local colleges and universities to come to N.H.S. and address the group. Slides and a question and answer period make each assembly an educational, as well as an entertaining event. As a final event for the year, Mr. Lee, the club's adviser, evaluates the members' participation and help in organization of all activities, and an award is given to the most deserving student. Folk Music Club This year, the third year after its creation, the Folk Music Club has taken up new and varied activities. With Mr. Gordes as adviser, the club has spent various informal sessions learning to play the guitar and listening to folk records. During some of the Thursday meetings in room 5A, arrangements done by members have been tape-recorded and replayed for their enjoyment and appreciation. President: Jean M. During these meetings, members see films or hear speeches given by members of the profession. Also during the year, the club engages in a special project. This year the club hopes to be able to make favors for a convalescent hospital or the Hartford Regional Center. Also on their program is a visit by a nurse from one of the military forces. 158 Ski Club The Ski Club has been organized for its third consecutive year as a club in which both experienced and novice skiers soon improve their skills. American Legion. The purpose of this program is to teach the selected young men good citizenship and the operation of government. The boys are chosen by the faculty of their schools on the basis of leadership qualities. Boy's State is set up to be similar to the actual government of Connecticut. On the first day, each boy is appointed to a town or city and to one of two political parties. During the next few days, each boy goes around making new friends and campaigning for his party and, sometimes, for himself. Elections are held on the town and city levels and then later in the week, after much campaigning and a huge rally, the elections for the state offices are held. Boy's State, however, is not all work, for Connecticut is the only state that has Boys' and Girls' State at the same time. Because of this, there are mixers, sport activities, a barbecue, and the Inaugural Ball, in which the boys can meet the girls. Above all, Boy's State teaches every boy present the true meaning of brotherhood and comradeship. J. Greenshields. P. Emard, G. Bourquin. R. Janson 160 Laurel Girls’ State Every year the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a program for the benefit of high school girls. Held for a week after the end of school, it teaches the girls leadership, fellowship, responsibility, and patriotism. Laurel Girls' State is a fictitious state, divided into five towns, each with its own town officials. Two legislative bodies, the Senate and the House of Representatives, act on bills drawn up by the towns. Two parties, Federalist and Nationalist, nominate candidates for state offices. It may be noted that this past summer, for the first time in the history of Girls' State, two girls from the same town, Newington, were elected to state office. Citizens of Girls' State are privileged to hear from many distinguished speakers, including Ella T. Grasso, and the highlight of the week is a talk from Governor John Dempsey. The week is drawn to a close with an Inaugural Ball at which time the state officials are sworn in and give acceptance speeches. Once over, the week is never forgotten. It is an experience to be cherished for life. In another early scrimmage, the Indians conquered the tough Derby team. The team played hard during the whole season under the guidance of its coaches. However, various injuries to valuable members held the team back because of the squad's small size, yet spirit was always present. A most important leader in regard to team spirit was this year's captain, Don Balducci. Each player had the opportunity to display his versatility since there were many position changes from the previous season. Because of all the hard practice and backing the team received, the Indians ended the season like a lion in victory over Rockville. Row I: S. Argosy, B. Gutt-mann, M. Swane. R. Dunn, R. Giarcia, D. Veleas Varsity Club The Varsity Club is the boy's athletic association of Newington High School which strives to promote high standards of physical fitness, scholarship, and citizenship in the entire student body through self-example and worthwhile club projects. The club is composed of varsity lettermen from each sport who serve as hosts for visiting teams, coaches, and officials and who act as ushers during school athletic events. The members are also instrumental in assisting the Faculty Manager of Athletics in organizing and planning the annual Athletic Awards Banguets. The governing body of the Varsity Club is the Executive Board which is made up of two lettermen from each varsity sport who meet twice monthly. 185 Track HJUifr it GOOD ■fPTWG OiO Coach Frank O'Rourke Row I: D. It is an individual sport with pressures on each player, though it takes an overall team effort to win. Under the coaching of the respected and competent coach, Mr. Frank O'Rourke and led by Captain Craig Schroder, this year's team should prove to be one of the strongest ever. Further adding to its strength is the return of many experienced runners, and the arrival of many new and promising members. Indeed, this year's schedule of both indoor and outdoor meets should demand the most of each athlete's perfected abilities. 188 Steve Girls’ Field Hockey Affiliated with the Girls' Athletic Association, the Girls' Field Hockey team is a varsity sport under the direction of Miss Bemis. The last game of the season, delayed a week, was at last played on a muddy field, and the undying effort of the girls made them victorious. As an anticlimax, the girls challenged the boys' soccer team to a game, which was quite an experience. This year Miss Bemis is leaving N.H.S. for England. All the girls appreciate her devotion and guidance to the hockey team as well as to all the girls in this high school. Our best wishes go with her. With Roger Janson, the tall rebounder at center; Captain Joe Van Camp and Nilus McAndrew as the talented forwards, and high scoring Steve Tonucci and Leo Veleas at guards, it was easy to see that we were out for victories. Hampered by early season injuries, the team fought back with a desire to play the game and team effort which soon put them back on the path to victory. Under the able direction of their coach, Mr. Reisner, the boys practiced long and hard and produced the kind of team of which Newington High School can be truly proud. They are hoping to make a good showing in the Central Valley Conference and are not overlooking the possibility of getting into the Class A tournament. 198 Dec. 9 Rockville Away 79-66 13 East Catholic Home 56-91 16 Plainville Home 66-53 20 Glastonbury Away 70-58 23 Southington Away 53-69 27 St. Thomas Away 57-58 30 Middletown Away 50-60 Jan. 3 Windsor Home 54-44 6 Wilson Away 47-59 13 Rockville Home 71-60 20 Middletown Home 68-82 27 South Catholic Home 63-87 31 Wilson Home 71-68 Feb. 3 Southington Home 62-68 7 Windsor Away 66-51 10 Plainville Away 65-48 17 Glastonbury Home 21 St. Thomas Home 23 South Catholic Away 200 201 Truda and Claire 202 Laury The Girl's Gymnastic Club this year is under the direction of Miss Eckersly, a gym teacher at Martin Kellogg. It is operating on the level of a varsity sport including several competitions with other schools, rather than as a club as in former years. Members of the gym club perform in the various areas including tumbling, balance beam, trampoline, unevens, horse, and floor exercise. Tryouts are held in January, at which time the girls must present a routine in one area. The highlight of the season for the gymnasts is the annual exhibition presented in March after weeks of preparation. Girls Gymnastic Club Row I: J. Boncal, N. James, T. Beveridge, C. Barrows, A. The largest organization at Newington High School, the Girl's Athletic Association, serves to promote athletic activities for girls, and to develop leadership and fair play. The nucleus of this organization is the G.A.A. Executive Board which meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month. The members of this board promote the functions of the association, such as the annual dance from which the proceeds go toward scholarships. The final event, and perhaps the most remembered, is the Farewell Campfire, which is held in honor of the departing Seniors. At the campfire, letter awards are presented, and seniors receive their final honors. President: Laura Augustine Vice-President: Sue Casioppo Secretary: Jean Johnson Treasurer: Sharon Fitzpatrick Advisor: Miss King 205 Tennis Henry Tennis, one of the world's best known sports, is increasing in popularity here in Newington on both the individual and team level. It is a sport which taxes the physical stamina and agility of the player to an extreme. This year, Newington's tennis team will 206 207 again be coached by the competent Mr. John Paskavitch. The team, which will rely heavily on the strength of seniors, Captain Henry Kalman and Ted Swanson, promises to make a fine showing in the Central Valley Conference. T. Swanson, B. The Indian Hill Country Club is again the scene of pars, birdies, and eagles as Newington High's Golf Team breaks the quiet air with cries of fore in its attempt to better the outstanding record that it produced last year. The possibilities of this year's team are favorable. With the return of Brian Connelly, John Doyle, Jeff Hewett, and several promising others, Coach Rogalski appears to again have a fine team. 208 The Newington High Baseball Team for 1966 is a promising one. Under the direction of Coach Davis, the team will be able to generate sportsmanship, competition, and school spirit. There will be many lettermen returning; Leo Veleas, Steve Ferriera, Tom Keltonic, Bob Prentice, Frank Ciarcia, Bruce Marino, George Hart, Mark Swayne, and Barry Wentland. A select group of junior varsity will be added, after numerous tryouts. With such a fine variety of ballplayers, the team should make a fine showing in the Central Valley Conference. 210 213 215 Junior Leaders’ Corps Row I: M. Kilmartin, L. Augustine, L. Tenukas, M. The girls in this organization are provided with valuable leadership experience by being trained to accept the responsibility of assisting in gym classes and intramurals. They are selected on a competitive basis according to skill, knowledge of sports, and leadership potential. The forty members meet every first and third Friday in the gymnasium to preview the material which will be covered in the gym classes the following week. Girls in this club act as gym class leaders, checking equipment, leading warm-up exercises, assisting in demonstrations, officiating during games, and supervising showers.
