Schwartz Deadline Timeii Quadrangle Starting the year with an almost entirely new staff, the Quadrangle produced nine issues, including driv- er safety and senior class special editions. Among the nine issues was an eightpage special edition, issued on Open School Night, which showed parents the var- ied work being carried out at Newfield. This year proved to be one of the most successful in the short history of the paper. The Columbia Scholas- tic Press Association judged the Quadrangle as a First Place Award Winner, one of the few school papers to receive this recognition. In the Annual Kemper In- surance Driving Safety Contest, the Quadrangle won second place and $150 in the national competition for the special safety edition. Actively participating in the Suffolk Scholastic Press Association, the Quadrangle staff attended meetings and workshops in several schools in the county. Several members of the staff were inducted into Quill and Scroll, an international honor society of high school journalists.

Laurel Veltman - CLO. Art Chairman - The link between Christmas and school spirit. The General Organization Council is the representative as- sembly 0f the student body of Newfleld. As such, the purpose of the organization is to provide a forum for student expression and to promote the general welfare of the school. The General Organization believes the welfare of the school lies in the indi- vidual and through its many activities, seeks to reach the stu- dent. The council sponsors pep rallies and Red and White Days to instill school spirit during major sports seasons. It provides away transportation and ticket concessions at the gate. The council seeks to impress upon the student the impor- tance of good citizenship and government. The school elections are completely controlled by the council. Through this event the student receives an insight into political machinery as regular campaigning, party platforms and debates progress. Among its many services are the morning announcements of school news over the PA. system, Parent visitation Night, dress-up day to encourage good grooming and the chartering of clubs. The latter is the most important power of the council by which it coordinates the workings of the various smaller Clubs in the school. This unity is derived through the assignment of charters, thereby making available G.0. judiciary and central treasury.
