Around Our School 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Seniors Classes Junior High Grades Sports Activities In Memoriam Theme When we think of the tremendous plant of knowledge we have in Newfane, we do not consider it an assembly line arrangement where each pupil must conform to a pattern. However, if we think of our school in terms of a large, progressive plant such as that which might be found in the automotive industry, with each depart- ment's taking on its proper function, the possibilities for development and expansion are endless. For example, the members of the Community might be considered stock holders, the Board of Education, brokers, and the Administrators, plant superintendents. Overseeing the activities are the Faculty Members, or Sales Managers. Let us look in on the functions of the various departments. The Elementary Grades are the personnel of the department which handles raw materials, while the Juniors High resembles the section which constructs the frame and chassis. The Sophomores, in their pre-carrier year, are responsible for the varied paint jobs on the automobile. The Juniors, as shipping room clerks, prepare the vehicles for shipment to the display room. In the school, as in the factory, the Custodians, as mechanics, keep the building in good working order, the Cafeteria staff provides food for all per- sonnel, as does the gas attendent supply to industry. The Office Staff handles the clerical work. The Bus Drivers transport the students to the school in much the same manner as some transport drivers deliver the carsto various sale rooms. Sports supply variety and competition for the students, as the makers of foreign cars supply variety and competition in the automobile industry. Activities also add to high school life, as accessories add the extra touch to the automobile. Upon completion of the product, it is sent to the display room personnel, which corresponds to the Senior Class. However, neither the Senior, upon graduation from the school, nor the Auto- mobile, upon leaving the factory, is really finished. As the auto is added to by its owners, the student adds to his experience as he gains in knowledge to go onward and upward. 5 WORK SHEET REPORT OF THE SENIOR CLASS FOR THE 1956 MODEL OF THE CENTURY Dedica ti OUR JUNIOR AND 1 SENIOR ADVISOR T0 THE CLASS OF '56 55 A i'Q gf' 3' QQ? Taylor Board of Education Since the Theme of our year book nCenturyn is the automobile industry let us draw a parallel between that industry and the whole of our school program. The automobile industry starts with the raw materialsandends withthe finished product. Whatis the product? An expertly functioning and beautiful new car in the possession of a satisfied owner and user. The money to uegin this whole process comes from the people, or investors Cgood citizens like you and mel whose investment is directed toward the production of the finest product it is possible for dedicated minds and geniuses to evolve. These stockholders place the functional details in the hands of the Board of Directors, which in our particular functionis the Boardof Education, who are elected by the people, known as tax-payers, who in reality are stockholders in our school system and endow them with authority to create American and Democratic personalities in our children, who are the new materials with which we work and whom we believe are endowed by God with certain inalienable rights, whichit is our privilege and duty to direct toward the fulland sacred achievement the freedomof each human personality. The Board of Education cooperates and works with the Administration Staff in securing the best qualified teachers both in terms of educational qualifications and personality outreach. Also, the efficient management and operation of the plant and equipment. This involves much work, thinking and planning together for a successful program, which will result in the finished product desired by the stockhold itaxpayerl and Board of Education. Similar in many respects to the expert who works on the drafting board is the lr. R. Beutel Mr. L. Treichler Faculty who takes the raw materials given and works into each piece of material the ideals of the great American Educational Program that will train our children to be efficient working models, useful in every respect for the purpose with which our Democracy believes they were created. f f ,-49 ,yr fl X,f' ,.,, ' , X, f,f yof Z n-LQX ii- P ,X Brokers MI- C- Mott Mr. J. The Industrial Arts Club sponsored a dance for the seventh and eighthgrades in January, and the Std in January, and the Student Council gave a dance in February. larch brought forth a new kind of party in the form of a Junior-High Game Night. This year, the ninth graders had their first glimpse of different clubs and organizations of which they could become members. Many students have become useful and energetic members of the various organizations. Holly Hanging was an important feature of the year for the Freshmen, and the students worked well together on their plans for successful decorations. All the Junior High boys had an opportunity to play basketball on the seventh, eighth, or the ninth grade team. This good training for future basket- ball teams is under the direction of Mr. Wilcox and Mr.Lederh0HSe Can you find it, boys? Really hitting the books! 41 Senior Band refer to page no, 84-85 This year the senior band, under the direction of Mr. Albert Nemeth, con- tinued to be built up by the addition of several new members and several new instruments. The risers also were new and proved to be a great help. Band rehearsal was scheduled as a regular class and was given a full fifty minute period. The senior band held rehearsal three times a week and each member of the band had a lesson at sometime during the week. Officers elected by the band were Bill Jackson, Dick Wemple, and Carol Morey, The fifty-two piece band played at several assemblies and also at the Halloween Parade and the Memorial Day Parade. The biggest event, of course, the regular concert held in May. Many varieties of music were played, ranging from novelty numbers to over- tures. Much emphasis was placed on reading new music and also on tone quality. The Niagara County Music Festival was held this year at Newfane Central. It was a busy time for all members of the band and especially for those who played in the Niagara County Band. When these members are qualified, they move up to the Senior Band. Senior Chorus refer to page no. 80-81 The Girls' Senior Chorus consists of girls from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. The second honor came as Lucius Cbetter known as Bill Britt! scored 44 points against Akron to break the league individual scoring We are still proud of the players who entered the tie off game with Lewiston-Porter at the Niagara Student Center of Niagara University Yes, we lost, but our team practiced good sportsmanship Indeed, they were a tribute to our school and we sincerely hope that future years may be as successful. Neary Future Homemaa kers - of Ame rl ca The Future Homemakers of America, advised by Miss Mary Gertrude Viverette, elected officers for 1955-56 in June of 1955. They are as follows: President, Pat Linderman: Vice-President, Nancy Palia: Secretary, Marian Smith, and Treasurer, Judy Large. They began the year with a skating party, September 14 at the Olcott Skating Rink. As a service, the F.H.A. continued to sell milk, cookies, and ice cream to students staying for after school activities. October was initi- ation month. It started with a tea on the fourth for F. H. A. pledges. The tea was followed by a week of informal initiation and finally the formal initi- ation at the Park Hotel, on the sixteenth of October. In November, a very successful Barn Dance was held, with music furnished Rudy Coumont and his orchestra. This was followed by a bake sale, and December the annual Holly Hanging once again took place. February brought about another bake sale and a winter party for F. H. A. members. In March, there was a bowling party for members only, and the sale of magazines to the people of the community once more took place. In April, a dance was held, and in May, another party. The close of the year found F. H. A. sponsoring another skating party and also attending a Western District meeting. Besides their many events, the F. H. A. girls went on a field trip to celebrate five years at Newfane Central School. They attended meetings at other schools and served at many dinners. The sale of sportswear and taking of individual pictures completed a very successful year. by in 79 gmg' hu? 1 t ia. A-.A g H E As g S A . . Row 1 J. Roger: C. Harris: S. Harrington: M. Smith: N. When Donald's parents moved to their home on the Ewings Road, he joined Judy Large, Patricia Neary, and Franklin Larkin at the Ewings Road school. Donald still lived on the Ewings Road when our Central building was com- pleted and he attended classes here from 1949.
