Led by Ron Smith and J. P. Mozena (a four year letterman) The Trojans qualified for the district meet. With several returning lettermen led by Dan Mozena and Chris Shalosky, the Trojans should be equally impressive next year. The Trojans were picked to finish the IVC race in fifth place, but instead ended in third place. The Trojan defence was unscored upon in the first four games making them the best defensive team in the league. Congratulations on a great effort and a fine season! Coach Holdsworth took on the job of rebuilding a program. Within 3 years his efforts paid off and Newcomerstown became recognized statewide. In 13 years of coaching at N.H.S.. Coach Holdsworth compiled a record of 79 — 48 — 3. Thanks Coach for the best 13 years of football Newcomerstown High School ever had! Coach Collins. RECORD — FINISH 9th IN STATE Gary had an excellent record this year with a total of 25 wins against only 2 losses. In his 4 year varsity career. Gary had a 63 15 record. Rich had an outstanding senior year, finishing with a 19 — 3 record and a career record of 34 — 18. Brent finished the season with an II 6 record and a career record of 34 — 20. Brent was hampered by injuries throughout most of this season. SECTIONAL RUNNERS-UP For the first time, the sectional wrestling tournament was held at Ncwcomerstown. The Trojans scored 99' points, giving them second place in the meet. Jeff Mathews Sectional Champ DISTRICT: 4th PLACE With first place finishes from Scarbrough and Nolan, and a second place finish from Varner. Newcomerstown took fourth place in the District meet. District Runner-Up Brad Nolan Sectional and District Champ 89 SCARBROUGH, NOLAN FINISH 3rd IN STATE The State Wrestling tournament was held at St. John's Arena in Columbus. Gary Scarbrough and Brad Nolan both took third place finishes by winning 3 out of 4 of their matches. These third place finishes mark the highest individual finish by a Trojan in the state meet and gave the Trojans a ninth place team finish in the state. Under Coach Craig Collins, the Trojan wrestlers had another outstanding season. Coach Collins called the season very satisfying and praised the effort of all the wrestlers. In just four years the Trojan wrestling program has become respected throughout the state. The team finished the season undefeated in dual meets, took first in the Inter Valley Conference meet, won the Newcomerstown Invitational, won the Cuyahoga Heights relays, took second at the Gara-way Invitational and second at the Shadyside relays.
