Try To Remember 1968 NEWCOSEAN Published by Newcomerstown High School Newcomerstown, Ohio Volume 45 ________________________I Try to remember the kind of September When life was slow — or was it? Always remember the kind of September When you were young and innocent 4 5 6 Deep in December it’s nice to remember Although you know the snow will follow Deep in December it’s nice to remember Without a heart the heart is hollow. 9 Deep in December it was nice to remember — 10 The new high school became our home in March ii ■I Through the halls of our dear high school many times we pass. But the happy days we spend here all must end at last. These Alma Mater words hold true as the Class of 1968 discovered. What a wonderful last year it was, though. The community, faculty, and students of Newcomerstown gave the Seniors an exciting, memory-laden year. Dedicating Lee Field and entering the new Newcomerstown High School were an integral part of the year, but the Seniors also remember the everyday occurrences—standing in line at the cafeteria, classroom discussions, and report to the office for being tardy to class. 12 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION AUTUMN Administration Faculty Football Homecoming Hi-Y Pep Club Marching Band Mr. Gallion's School Seventh Grade Eighth Grade Freshmen WINTER Y-Teens Basketball Talent Show Concert Band Sophomores Juniors SPRING Choir Future Homemakers of America Thespians National Honor Society Student Council Science Fair Brigadoon Spring King and Queen Newcosean Sweetheart Library Club Track Student Honors Junior-Senior Prom Newcosean Staff Seniors Baccalaureate Commencement Senior Trip ADVERTISEMENTS INDEX The air was cool and crisp, heavy with the smell of popcorn, and tense with excitement as the proud Trojans of Newcomerstown beat Scio's Panthers for their first victory at Lee Stadium dedication night. The basis for each student's education in written communication is built throughout junior high school as he studies sentence structure, correct usage, spelling, and the other basics he will use in writing. The student's knowledge of these skills is adapted for use in oral communication as he learns the correct methods of discussion and debate. While learning to appreciate good literature and the mass media, students are also instructed to use both for research and study. In high school students are taught to combine their skills in oral and written communication, hopefully producing well organized papers or oral presentations. Enjoying their first season at the newly christened Lee Stadium, they compiled an impressive 6-4 record. A major reason for their success can be attributed to the record thirty-nine boys who turned out for the squad. Each man pushed his buddy for a starting position but team unity was never lost. Possessing the best defensive team in the county, the Trojans, led by Dan Sweitzer, the only three year letterman, limited their opponents to an average of eleven points a game while averaging twenty themselves. The 1967 Trojans will be remembered as a team who not only voiced their desire for victory, but also went out on the field and attained it. 41 TEAM LEADERS L. to R.: Burt Beaber—line coach, Alan Osier—Freshman coach. Curt Hinds—line coach, Ward Holdsworth—head coach. Seniors, Tom Little and Tim Goett-ge served as our 1967 Trojan cocaptains. Due to these two boys, team morale ran high. When the going got tough, Tom and Tim made sure the tough got going. They cheered their team on to their first victory in the newly dedicated Lee Stadium. From then on, much more excitement was experienced throughout all the games. The spirit from the first victory was continued by the numerous and well-planned pep rallies. The team's spirit along with that of the students, brought a successful season in basketball. As tournament time rolled around the hopes and dreams were high. Yet the waiting and the hard work for the tournament was well worth it, for the Trojans won their first tournament game in eighteen years. The cheerleaders had no trouble creating spirit, for the spirit was shown tremendously by all. As part of the team, the cheerleaders realized that they had done something to be proud of, for a lifelong dream had already been a reality—winning the first tournament game—1968. 55 MARCHING The eighty-three member marching band displayed an excellent performance at each football game. WES HARDING-Sr. JEFF SCHMIDT-Sr. RESERVES IMPROVE THRU 6-12 SEASON L-R: Donnard Haver, Dave Barber, Ron Whyde. Mark Warner, Tim Peoples, Rick Storck, Mike Bricker, Steve Lower, and Ron Van Voorhis. This year's reserve basketball team displayed a fine mental attitude. Coach Sam Cutshall placed an accent on the fundamentals of the game. Fine shooting ability was discovered in Freshman, Mark Warner, and Sophomore, Mike Bricker, did a commendable job on the boards for the little Trojans. With continued hard work the varsity should have some talented youngsters to choose from in future years. FROSH GAIN EXPERIENCE Kneeling, L R: Tom Addy, Tom Heller, Roger Quillen, Jay Parks, Steve Shaw, Jeff McCune, Mike Barthalow, Don Brown, Rodney Price. Standing: Coach Holdsworth, Bill Judy, Steve Castle, Carl Smith, Dusty Wilkin, John Stewart, Greg Bliss, Randy Hoffman, Ivan Hickenbottom. The Freshmen finished their season with a 1-10 slate. Coached by Mr. Holdsworth, the squad played a long tough schedule losing some games by only a basket. They were only out of one ball game and this was due to illness. If success can be measured by experience gained, then the Freshmen were indeed successful. 83 EIGHTH GRADE STRESSES FUNDAMENTALS Kneeling, L-R: Jjm Taylor, Jim Fletcher, Dave Weber, Richard Smith, Don Baker, John Harding, Steve Calhoun, Don Funk, Rick Sharrock, John Starkey, Danny Wilkin. Standing: Coach Hinds, Rick Hooker, Gary Crosswhite, Jim Harstine, Steve Gates, Paul Simpson, Gary Hoffman, Bruce Gaumer, Steve Wright, Dave Hawk, John Lyons and Greg Gadd, managers. The eighth graders concluded their season with a 3-10 ledger. Coach Hinds possessed exceptional height in Steve Gates, Paul Simpson, and Gary Hoffman. Coordination and fundamentals were stressed. It was the goal of each boy to strive for improvement. As these boys prepare for their high school careers a tough road awaits them but success can be attained if they are willing to pay the price. 84 SEVENTH GRADE PREPARES FOR FUTURE Kneeling, l-R: Coach Hamsher, John Hendershot, Jerry Beiter, Coach Oder, Coach Snader. Standing: Tiger Mason, Rick Moore, Mike Weber, Danny Gibson, F. H. Gates, Anthony lenzo, Gary Myers, Jeff Jurin, Terry Smith, Eddie Hammersley, Tom K. Mason, Chris Cornell, Greg Hackenbracht, Kenny McCants. The seventh graders closed a long campaign with a disappointing 1-12 record. The boys gained a new experience since this was the first year that they played in regulation games. They must now forget the past and prepare for the future. It is hoped that the work begun by Mr. Osier this year will better prepare the team for the next five years of basketball ahead of them. 85 TALENT SHOW IS The Annual Talent Show sponsored by the Senior Class, scored a remarkable success in February. Bill Snader and Robin Rice acted as the Masters of Ceremonies for this event. Jessie Trotter was presented with an award for first place with her songs, Juvenile Delinquent and The Soul of a Man. The keys to the new school were presented by the architect to Mr. Hamsher. Senator Oliver Ocasek was the main speaker. On April 26 the flag pole and flag were dedicated. Rev. George Shurtz gave a stirring patriotic address. At the annual All-Sports Banquet on May 17, it was announced that a Newcomers-town Hall of Fame was being formed for former Newcomerstown athletes. Brothers Woody and Ike Hayes were the first to receive this honor. Spring was a time for talking. Much of this talking took place in study hall. 102 OF EVENTS Featuring music and dancing, both the Newcosean Sweetheart Ball, on the right, and the musical Brigadoon, on the left, were thoroughly enjoyed by those many, many people who attended. As the season of spring events broke forth upon activities, so did it break forth upon the land. There was much landscaping to be completed around the new school. 103 Spring was also a time for concerts—both band and choir. MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. The Junior High Choir has excelled greatly during the 67-68 school year. Both the girl's and the boy's choirs sent select ensembles to the district competition. Apparently their effort was well-made, because each ensemble received superior ratings. 104 Skip Black was featured in the Spring Concert where he sang a solo entitled Ole Man River . Skip has been a baritone in the All-Ohio Youth Choir, and he will travel- to Europe this summer with other top-notch vocalists. The Newcomerstown High School Choir has grown in both quantity and quality under Walter Heck's capable direction this past year. But most important, the quality of workmanship has enabled some members to participate in the District-8 Contest. During the school year, the choir presented several very interesting concerts. The theme of the Christmas concert was religious and meaningful, but it also had a touch of light humor. Several ensembles from the choir were privileged by being invited to sing at the PTA Banquet, the Newcomerstown Choral Society, and the Business and Professional Women's meeting. In addition, the entire choir sprang into spring at the annual Spring Concert. The real highlight of the year, though, was in April when all choir members took part in the school's second musical Brigadoon . Much hard work was rewarded by long-lasting memories. 105 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA L. to R., First Row: Debbie Mallory, Effie Trotter, Shirley Hayes, Ruth Ann Dorsey, Marsha Yanai, Donna Sharpies, Marilyn Casterline, Terry Cox, Alice Belt, Kathy Swigert, Teresa Landis. A MIRACLE IN Apparently, miracles do happen, for on April 5th and 6th in the high school auditorium, the village of Briga-doon reappeared. After 100 years of undisturbed silence, the village emerged just as it once was in the Scottish highlands. Actually, Jeff Douglas and Tommy Albright stumbled on the village during a hunting expedition. Soon the wonder of the lives of the villagers unfolded before them. Briga-doori, the Spring play was presented by more than 100 students under the direction of Mrs. Ralph Portz, Mr. Walter Heck, Mr. Dennis Belle, Mrs. Bev Shar-rock, and Mrs. Walter Heck. Tommy was played by Richard Tidrick. His friend, Jeff, was played by Charlie McPherson. Susan Hawk played Fiona McLaren, and Peggy McCants played her sister, Jean. Jay Parks played Charlie Dalrymple, the jubilant bridegroom. Harry Beaton, the shunned lover was played by Bill Snader. 132 THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS 133 A LOT OF 134 HARD WORK . . . the Juniors made decorations for the Junior-Senior Prom. 135 AND THE CHARLIE How about a Hawaiian punch? A large fireplace and a mural of the Neuschwan-stein Castle highlighted, the hall. Swiss boy and girl figurines and wax-dripped wine bottles accented the tables. Large, billowing clouds, Swiss shops, and snow-capped mountains transformed the gymnasium into an Alpine setting for the dance. A picturesque mountain chalet was the main feature of the room. Following the dance a movie, The Cardinal , was shown in the Middle School auditorium. The bowling alley was opened at two-thirty for the students before they returned to the high school for breakfast.
