PROPHECY Case No. 101-102-105 Subject—Class of ’58 The prophecy you are about to read is false. Only the handwriting has been changed to protect the author. It was Tuesday. I was working die noon watch of Eastern State. My partner's name is Sam. My name is Monday (lost weekend, you understand!) 12:01 I got a call on the 419, Don Mulvane had been caught impersonating Jerry Lewis. Jim Penrod was in on the deal, thinks he's Dean Martin. Brought 'em to headquarters for questioning. After a grueling 5 minutes they began singing. It was a sad tale--Becky Leonhard, Barbara Poorman, Sandy Hicken-bottom, and Martha Murphy had been pulling hair over who was to be Marilyn Monroe’s successor. I booked them on the 304 and turned them over to the chief, Simple Davis, known for his ability to dig, dig, dig. 12:02 The chief sent me and Sam over to the world-famous Egler Bakeries, caterers to all the elite and Jean Pappas. Someone had been stealing Brownies. We nabbed the thief, Patty Marstrell. Her getaway car was driven by the notorious Blaine Tish, and his gunmoll, Dolly Buss, was perched in the rumble seat, swigging a fifth of Three Snoots Distilled Sparkling Water. Got a call on the 3-way ankle television from chief. The facts, just the facts, pointed to Gary Paulum. We booked ’em on the 303 and started to grab a gooey sandwich and a muddy cup of coffee at The Greasy Spoon when a 4-alarm call from our spy and all-round stoolie, Gene Parks, sent us over to P.U. (Podunk University.) 12:03 Melva Marquand, world-renowned Olympic star, famed in the walking race and discus throw, had been caught trying to stage a tee-shirt raid on the Uga Uga Uga fraternity house. Her accomplices were Patsy Ahle, Cora Arth, Betsy Stout, Beverley Bowers, and Gretchen Ellis. The president of the college, George Fenton, gave us a list of the victims. He stated that these HUGE girls were picking on the smallest boys in the fraternity - Married Man Marlatt, Cuz Rothenstein, Bunk Dulaney, Dumb-Head Burky, and Flirt Price. When suddenly a chick began moving my way - kept mumbling something about I must keep in step. I must keep in step. . . Heard someone mention her name - Sandy Peoples - and her occupation - trying to keep up with Shortie Craigo. 24 PROPHECY 12:04 Saw a suspicious-looking character. Followed it into a dive. Just happened to be my favorite dairy bar, Johns', run by Hoiman. The bartender. Sue Miller, said to look in the back room. I did. Found Lefty Polk, Chewing Gum Kid Stecker, Carla Crater Hall, Judy Opphile Fairchild, and Judy Deanft Moore in a hot game of Old Maid. They said they hadn't seen anybody come in, however, they said that the mysterious stranger had been carrying a trombone case. I heard a weird noise. Didn't know whether it was human or not. Looked and saw Joy Triplett, Nancy Rogers, Diana Ross, and Sharon Porcher quarteting, the famous, Boone Ballad. Triplett said with a raised eyebrow, Saw Dan Loader shagging down through here a minute ago, Dick Patton creeping after. Drooling Welsch said, I saw a trombone case with brown hair go thataway. Went thataway. Stumbled over the richest begger in town, John D. Watson, with his accomplice, Glenn VanVoorhis. They said that they had seen a trombone case with brown hair go into the Y.M.C.A. There standing in the middle of the floor was Pat Walters and her magic trombone. Asked what was in her trombone case. She asked why I wanted to know. I said, Just wanta get the facts, mam. I looked in the case. Just what I had suspected all along - melted ice cream. Booked her for smuggling melted ice cream. 12:05 Got a tip from Ears Johnson, a reliable stool pigeon, that he had traced Fred Nay, an F.B.I.man for the Communists, and last year's top undercover man in the Country, to a waterfront dive run by Bouncer Mason. Took a run down there. My eyes roamed to the torch singer, Slinky Bord-enkircher. She was some doll. We had a rough battle with Nay's bodyguards, Betty Wolff, Maxine Watson, Linda Stocker, and Florene Shearer, but finally hooked 'em and took 'em on a 319. Through a tip from Nay, we got a lead on Rebecca Flash Kelly, ringleader of the notorious Space Patrol, who had been suspected of trying to smuggle laughs in Home Economics Class for some time. Her co-pilot, Ten-Star-General Jean The-Last-Name-Cant’-Be-Spelled-Read-Or-Pronounced was a shady-iooking character too. I took them in on 407. 12:06 Got a call from Rush Town. Fat Man Peoples and his band were disturbing the peace. Some of the band members were: Phyllis Courtwright-tuba; Sandra Sumers - bass drum; Larry Lewis - piccolo; Jim Tedrick - chimes; George Farris-guitar; Judy Loader - violin; and Judy Stewart - triangle. Pug Mayhew and John Mallet insisted on giving us a sample of their famed hoochy-koochy dance, Double Trouble, before we booked ’em on a 407 and the Red Jeep came, with Virginia Heston at the wheel. 12:07 We returned to headquarters-time sure seemed to have passed quickly-we began putting 419, 304, 303, 206, 319, and 407 together-they all added up to just one thing - the class of 1958! How did we get the answer? We just played a hunch- Dum-da-dum-dum Pat Walters Carol Ann Rush Don Mulvane Jim Penrod Witnesses for the Class of 1958 of Newcomerstown High School 25 CLASS OFFICERS OF ’59 PRESIDENT: Marshall Fisher; VICE PRESIDENT: Marian Gaskill; SECRETARY: Harold Best; TREASURER: Dianne Gross; SOCIAL CHAIRMEN: Mary Ann Mullen, Tom Atkinson. ACTIVITIES At the hop! Splash! DESERTED BUT REMEMBERED The wall came tumbling down. Look out below! Alone and deserted now it stands Dry Leaves on the ground lie still. No children with joy now clap their hands; No happy shouts of voices shrill. Cars park now where once were swings, Where girls skipped rope and boys played ball. Dark windows lack bright colored things, Like the leaves and acorns of the fall. The paint, once smooth has long since cracked. From the rain that has leaked down through. Some windows are broken and it's a fact That this building if known is far from new. Some look at it now and go right on. But then they don't feel as we Who used to run and play on the lawn And raise our voices in glee. The bell that used to bid us come Is silent; no more it will ring. And after recess there were always some Who would take one last great swing. Yes, we think of it oftentimes and sigh, As we think of good times we knew In Maplewood in years gone by But now those years are through. It's deserted now, its duty done. As a school it is no more. But still it's remembered by everyone Who ever went through its door. She'll soon be gone. Goodby, Maplewood. WE SALUTE YOU We, the seniors of fifty-eight, As it comes time to graduate, Would like to salute our teachers fine Who helped us all along the line. In our homerooms when we raised such commotion, To their jobs they must really have had great devotion. The patience they had was really great, So to them we salute as we graduate. To Mrs. Phillips who was really grand, With her sense of humor and helping hand. Her advice and counsel she gave with pleasure, And the friends she had were truly full measure. To Mrs. Swigert who taught the girls The way to a man's heart is not just by her curls. Her home making tips were really great, And as teacher or friend she was truly first-rate. And to Coach Leonhard we'd like to say, We'll always remember his genial way. The way that he coached our Trojan team, He ought to be rated with acclaim and esteem. And to Mr. Gary and Mr. Roeder, too, We would like to express our thanks to you. For you have worked with the Board of Education, To establish good student-teacher relation. We wouldn't forget to mention these two, For Melba and Lynn, we hail to you, For the great work in the offices you've done, Yet you were always ready for a little bit of fun. A newcomer to our school this year, Was Mr. Kennedy for whom we now cheer. He made our band and choir fun With his good-natured joking with everyone. And to our janitors Mr. Neal and Mr. Clark, Who worked to keep our building clean many times 'till after dark. They were always very patient with us when we carelessly threw things around. And we realize now the work we caused. When no longer we'll be around. And to all the teachers not mentioned here We wish to give you one great big cheer. For all of you have helped in some way, To make us what we are today. So as we go our separate ways, We'll always remember our high school days, The things that were said and the things that were done, The disappointments as well as the fun. Janet Boone 72 The Board of Education that ended its term of office on December 31, 1957 has had some tremendous challenges to face and overcome. The construction of two elementary school buildings in itself is a tribute to the encUess efforts of these members to provide for the educational opportunities of the youth of the community. Serving on a school board does not ordinarily win public acclaim. Much of the most effective work done is behind the scenes. There is no personal glory and little monetary reward--but the retiring board members Atkinson, Heller and Titus feel they are fully repaid, we are sure, in the knowledge that they have had a part in enabling the schools to influence profoundly and for the better, the life of the youth of Newcomerstown. BOARD OF EDUCATION The 1958 Newcomerstown Board of Education consists of Mrs. Marvin Loader and Mr. Arthur Oaklief who have formerly served. Newly elected members are Mr. Parker Burge, Mr. Donald Wolff and Mr. Wendel Yanai. The new board of education is accepting its duties during a time when greater stress is demanded in scientific achievement. Whatever the American public education system has accomplished in the past, Communist imperialism is challenging the very foundation of our American way of life. For this reason the tasks of the present board will be great to find ways and means to provide the materials to improve the total educational program, and to encourage its youth to strive towards richer scholastic achievements. 74 75 BACCALAUREATE Newcomerstown High School Auditorium SUNDAY, MAY 25, 1958 2:30 P.
