During the years Mr. Smith taught at Newcomers- town High School he was greatly respected and well liked by his students and fellow teachers. The faculty and entire student body regretted his leaving last year, when the answered the call to the colors by returning to the Navy. BEITER June 10, 1ss9-Apr11 6, 1951 Mr. Beiter served the Board of Education faithfully for twenty-nine years as Presi- dent and later as clerk-treasurer. Not, how did he die, but, how did he liveg Not, what did he gain, but, what did he give. These are units to measure the worth Of a man as a man, regardless of birth. Not, what was his church, not what was his creed But, had he befrinded those really in need. Not, what did the sketch in the newspapers say, But, how many were sorry when he passed away. I have put off writing about it until after the reunion, which was last night. We all had a grand time, and such an elaborate party! I'm quite sure you would not have known half the people there. It was held in Kelleyls Colonial Cartwheel. You know, Melva, that I would not have gone there otherwise, but I just couldn't miss this reunion. You should have seen Mary Ann's dress. There must have been a small fortune in diamonds on it, and she made all of 'her money in that place! Senator Dennis Welch was toastmaster, and introduced the members, who in turn told what they had done in the past ten years. Ronald Vogt, the world famed wild game hunter, made quite a long speech on his exploits in Peoli. The night club has a lovely nursery where mothers may leave their children well cared for. Leaving their children there while they enjoyed the program were Sara Cummins Phillips, Mary Schlupp Tyler, Shirley Stewart Nugen, and Marjorie Addy Carruthers. As we looked around the table we saw Allen Hennis and behind bandages was Dan Everhart. As you know, these fellows are tied for the world's racing championship. It seems Dan had a little accident the other day but came to the reunion anyway. Crooner Clarence Johnson and orchestra leader Keith Dennis entertained the group. Odis and Ruby Lee Dansby, famous dancing team, and Shirley Fillman, songstress, also performed. Donald Best and Gary Jurin, professional football players, flew in from Guernsey for the event. Also flying in from the East was Jerry Beiter, famous painter, who was exhibiting his art in New York City. At 9:00 o'clock station WLW QVVatson-Little-Wolffj gave a salute to the class of '52, Coming up from the winter quarters in Florida was David Daredevil Ross, who is with the Ringling Bros. Circus, with his L'Death on VVheels motorcycle act. TWENTY FIVE Letters were received from those who are in service: Major Glenn Bricker, Sergeant Jack Ellis of the Army, Corporal Mary Lou Portz and Plc. Marilyn Moore of the WAFS. Ann Tilton, who owns the Optimistic Optical Co., and her assistant, Donna Myers, were present. Dr. Max Roeder, Brain Surgeon, Dr. .lim Mullen, Dentist, Dr. Patricia McCants, Veterinarian, and nurses Jane Baumgardner and Grace Angle were all in attendance. Coroner Jack Foraker, and Roger Hart, Undertaker, were seated side by side in case of emergency. Professor Robert Buzan and his assistant, Ruth McFadden, left their atomic experiments in. order to attend. Mrs. Harold Huffman CFaye Caldwellj, Mrs. Wendall Ford, and Mrs. Gerald Liggett, flew in from their respective army camps and husbands. Richard Hackenbracht, accompanied by his wife, the former Carol Triplet, passed out apples. from his Rosy Apple Orchard . Misses Helen Mardis, Thomasina Postlewait, and Moira Saylor, who own a modeling school in New York, were at the reunion. Robert McDonnel, state agricultural agent, and his assistant, Bill Tufford, were in attendance also. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Weaver CLucille Smithj, newlyweds, barely made it back from their honeymoon in time to come. Hunters Donald Buckskin Nay, Max Shotgun Sharrock, William 'LSureshot Shaw, and Richard Nevermiss Nolan had just returned from a hunting trip to Kimbolton. Each told of his own experiences. Sheriff Ted Casey Swigert and his secretary, .lo Ann Walters, were out on a case and therefore were unable to attend. I guess that is about all. I'm sorry you could not come. The kids have surely changed in ten years' time. I hope you can come to the reunion ten years from now. Sincerely yours, Mrs. Jim Lehman fCarolyn Wigfieldj TWENTY-SIX Qllzuas mill We, the members of the class of 1952, bequeath the following articles to the oncoming students. In eight plays the Trojans hit pay dirt with Gary Jurin plunging over from the three yard line. The try for extra point failed but Newcomerstown held a 6-0 lead at the end of quarter. The Massillon running game paid oii' with two touchdowns in the second and third quarters while the Troja.ns were unable to gain con- sistently against the Tiger defense. At the end of three quarters Massillon held a 25-6 advantage. Newcomerstown added its final points in the fourth stanza on a 22-yard pass, Yanai to Jurin. LOUDENVILLE Coach Bill Durtschi's gridmen suffered from fumblitis in the iirst few minutes in the game with Loudenville. It cost them three touchdowns in rapid succession. After the Trojans received the opening kickoff, they fumbled on the third play deep in their own territory and Loudenville scored. On the next kickoff, the Trojans fumbled again on their own six-inch line. Another fumble soon after the next kickoff set up Loudonville's third touch- down. Despite being so far behind in the score, the Trojans kept on fighting. They came close in the second half but couldn't push the ball over. Halfback Gary Jurin prevented a whitewash- ing when he intercepted a pass in the last per- iod and ran for the touchdown. The extra point was lost. SIXT Y-SIX UHRICHSVILLE Exploding for three touchdowns in the second period, the Uhrichsville Tigers romped to a 28-0 victory over Trojans in an East Central Ohio League game. The Trojans opened up strong and drove to the Tiger six-yard line but a Tiger intercepted a pass. That is where the Tigers took over the game. The Tigers outcharged the Trojans 236 yards to 184, the Trojans taking 10 of the marked to the Tiger's 13. Tigers attempted eight passes, completed three for 56 yards and Trojans made good on four of 11 aerials for 36 yards. STRASBURG The game with Strasburg was the first victory for the Trojans. Coach Durtschi's boys ran up 27 good score onthe clock, beating Strasburg -0. Jurin took the kickoff on the 15 yard line and went around left end for 85 yards to a touch- down. Harris blocked a Strasburg kick and went for a touchdown. In the second quater from the 4 yard line Mullen went over left tackle for a touchdown. Jurin went around left end for the extra point. Later in the game Roe ran around right end for a touchdown. Jurin ran for a 25 yard touchdown around left end. Little went up over center for the extra point. Little went around right end for a 4 yard touchdown in the third quarter. Weaver went through center for a 40 yard touchdown. In the fourth quarter Walkenspaw threw a 20 yard pass to Roe for a T.D. Weaver ran the ball over for the extra point. Then Gadd took the ball around right end for a T.D. Carol Triplet, queen, and her court reigned over the homecoming festivities. After the game a dance was held at the high school. WINTERSVILLE Newcomerstown's Trojans ran up 33 points against high-powered, undefeated Wintersville, ggt lost to the Golden Warriors, who chalked up Jurin paced the scoring with two touchdowns and an extra point. He tossed a touchdown pass to Hashman and also threw extra-point passes to Hashman and Harris. The Trojans pulled a breath-taking thriller with only a minute and eight second left in the second quarter. Mullen found himself trapped behind the line. Mullen had other ideas. Instead of being downed, he cut back in a wide arc. From his own 39 yard line he heaved a long pass to Jurin. The receiver was nailed from behind. As Jurin went down he flipped the ball to his left into the arms of Hashman, who crossed the goal line un- touched. Yanai contributed a touchdown on a line play. Little turned in the longest Trojan run of the evening, running 73 yards to set up a touchdown which he made on a later play. BYESVILLE Scoring virtually at will, Newcomerstown's Trojans slaughtered the hapless Byesville Fal- cons, 86 to 0, in a game at Pine field in Cam- bridge. Mullen circled around right end for an 8 yard touchdown. Best kicked the extra point. Shortly afterward, Yanai passed to Harris for 21 and netted another TD. Another Yanai and Harris pass netted 22 yards and another score, Best kicking the point. Little hit right tackle to reach pay dirt. Early in the second period, Sherman's pass was intercepted by Mullen on the Byesville 42, and he ran all the way. Jurin's kick was good. The Trojans sent Little around right end for 35 yards to score. Mullen scampered around right end for the TD. Beiter plunged center for the extra point. Receiving the third period kickoff, Mullen re- turned to his own 41 and Gadd promptly broke around left for 59 yards. Later Mullen knifed over left end for 18 and a TD. Hackenbracht added two more points when he brought down Sherman in the Falcon end zone for a safety. Little made another touchdown around left end. Resuming the frolic in the fourth quarter, Walkenspaw made two touchdowns. Yanai passed to Little for the extra point. Near the end of the game, Sherman passed from his own 26. Mullen intercepted and romped into the end zone. Hall drove through center for extra point. CARROLLTON It seemed like the Trojans used most of their touchdowns in the Byesville game. All they man- aged to get was one six-pointer from Carrollton. Neither team could hit pay-dirt in a scoreless third period. Don Little saved the Trojans from a white- wash, when, after a teammate had recovered a fumble on the Carrollton 17, he broke through tackle for a touchdown and Jim Mullen plunged for the extra point. Despite the decisive defeat, Newcomerstown chalked up 14 first downs to Carrollton's eight and outgained the winners 301 yards to 188 yards from scrimmage. Nine fubles, only three of which were recovered, also aided in the Trojans' down- fall. Mullen turned in the longest run of the game when he romped 40 yards just as the final gun sounded. CADIZ With the gridiron covered with snow, the line markers were vitually obliterated and only a handful of fans were in the stands for the Cadiz game. Most spectators who did turn out sat in their autos, and the wintry weather curtailed the Dads' night program. Newcomerstown Trojans lost the game on fumbles. We couldn't blame them for fumbling a little bit because it was a very bad night to play ball. For awhile it looked as if the Trojans were going to take the game. That was when the fumbles started rolling and that messed it up. Three plays gave Cadiz only six yards and when Mason dropped back to kick, a bad pass from center resulted in his being tackled on the one-yard stripe. Little knifed right end for the T.D. Jurin's attempt to carry the ball over left end failed for the extra point. The Trojans got back in the game when Jurin took Kelly's kick-off on his own 15 and outsped the whole visiting team in a sensational 85-yard runback to cross the goal line. Yanai passed to Harris for the extra point on an end run. DENNISON The Trojans won a close game from Dennison, 14 to 6, as they wound up their 1951 football season on the Dennison gridiron. Newcomerstown got a break early in the game when Polen of Dennison got away a bad punt that netted only 10 yards, going from the home team's 34 to 44. Mullen smacked the center of the line for a first and 10 on the Railroaders' 33. Jurin went off right tackle for another first and 10 to the 21. Little gained two in a plunge over left tackle. Mullen was stopped without gain, but on the next play he completed a pass to Jurin for a touch- down. Jurin kicked the extra point. On the Dennison kick-off, Jurin took the ball from his own 20 to the 34. In seven plays, the Trojans marched to the Dennison nine, where Jurin circled left end for a touchdown. He kicked the extra point to make the score 14 to 6. SIXTY-SEVEN Opponent Qmdall 1927 1931 1935 N.H.S.
