STAGE 2 SET 12 , 0-fl DONALD B. BORDER MANCHESTER COLLEGE, A.B. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, lVI.A. .1 .dl This production is dedicated to the Superintendent of the Newcomerbstoivn Public Schools, Donald B. Boeder, who has been our capable and efficient executive for the past seven years. During this period of time many important events have happened which have affected our school and its program. Winiiing the war and educating boys and girls to take their places in a period of strife was the emphasis during World War II. Now the focus is turned to the problems of adjustment to the post war period and to living together in one community, one state, and one world. These influences have made the work of a school executive a most im- portant and far reaching task. Building a better school program for boys and girls so that they may learn the democratic vvay of life is the goal which our superintendent constantly keeps in sight. Because of his tireless efforts in striving to reach this goal, his wisdom, and his foresigiht, we deem it an honor to dedicate this volume of the New- cosean to Mr. Boeder. J. Stokes Construction Company. Mr. Stokes is now pulling up in front of the Club to attend the alumni party for the Stars of '49 given by the Club owners, William Thomas, III and Ralph Neal. Other guests are arriving. Among them are actresses Margery Dorsey and Pat Evans, escorted by Albert Beall. The girls have just finished their latest picture Faithless . Albert Beall is currently starred in the stage play Lover , written by Graedon Cornell and Audrey Groff who are also among the guests tonight. Kenneth Carruthers, who won the Indianapolis Speedway this year, can be seen passing car after car as he approaches the Club. The doorman, Earl Tyson, is greeting some famous guests of the sports world. These are: Ruth Art, Coach of the World's Championship Girls Volley- ball team of Peoli University, Dick Hannahs, Football Coach at Northeastern, with his wife Marjorie who is a nurse at the Herbert-Russell Hospital, Booty Moore, Basketball Coach at Northeastern. These two Northeastern teams have brought honor to their coaches by going undefeated for the past three years. Just inside the door way we see Doris Robinson and Audrey Hashman, well known hair stylists at N.C.T. Movie Studios, Los Angeles, California. Doris and Audrey flew east on the Marlatt-Meek Airlines. The crew were none other than Joanne McCune, pilot, Martha Ott, co-pilot, and Wanda Kamban, hostess. On the same plane were Jeanne Murphy, Professor of Dramatics and Marie Murphy, Professor of Music, at Southern California University. As the soft dreamy music of Kenny Patterson's world famous orchestra drifts through the Club '48 we slowly wind our way through the Club meeting old friends. Pausing at the first table we talk to Ruth Burdette, Virginia Taylor and Beatrice Hughes, co-owners of Burtahu Drive-In, Gary Phillips, President of the J. C. Nickle Company, Bradley Guy, owner of a large chain of G.A.I. Super Markets, and Donald Fenton, owner of the famous resort and dude ranch, The Valley of the Sun, near Laramie, Wyoming. Coming across the dance floor are Beryl Kopes, who was voted model house-wife of the year, with Norma Patterson, wife of the internationally known orchestra leader. They report that Julia Maloy an outstanding mis- sionary in China, is unable to attend the alumni party because of her duties on the mission field. Seated at the table at our right are Governor Richard E. Tyler, his secre- tary Phyllis Smyth, and Norma Shurtz, secretary to the proprietors of the Club '4-9, who are also seated at the table. Bill is telling his wife, Hilma, about TWENTY THREE the telephone call just received by operator Betty Carney from Jack Beiter and Dale Maloy. These two Foreign Diplomats in the country of Wolffe, which is ruled by George Waller, had missed the U.S.S. Newcomer, and cabled their regards to the Class of '49. This steamship line, with offices in New York City, is owned by Sue Barnett, Norma Mason, and Betty Wilson. We notice other classmates atithe table to our left. They are Joan Neal Cunningham, Beverly Foraker Maurer, Doris Haning Foreman, with their husbands. They tell us they all enjoy living within a block of eath other in Detroit, Michigan. Bill Raach and Bob 4'Butch,, Bay, bartenders at the Club '49, pause to talk to June Addy, make-up artist at N.C.T. Movie Studios. June is telling them how well Carole Neal and JoAnn Couts have done in the office of Liggett and Lehman, as accountants. Liggett and Lehman are owners of a new chain of self service gas stations extending from Los Angeles to Newcomerstown. The lights dim as Bob Zeigler, Master of Ceremonies, starts the evening's entertainment with the announcement of the first performance, a breathtaking exhibition of human skill in which Don Kohl hurls 12 knives simultaneously at his attractive partner, Marjorie Bates. The spot light reveals the beauty and precision of their act. These two have thrilled all Europe with their per- formances and have returned tonight to be with the grand old Class of 194-9. The knife act is over and the lights come on again. As the orchestra starts playing soft music we recognize among the players the talented musicians, Jack Hampton, Bill Evans, and Larry Patton. Now the M. C. is announcing that Margaret Dayton, soloist with the orchestra, will sing Hlt Had To Be You . She steps into the spotlight, lovely in her black strapless gown. There is a shriek in the audience. As we make our way through the crowd we see what has happened. James Nay, heavy-weight champion of the world, has just passed out at the sight of her. Zeigler interrupts the program to read us three telegrams of regret. The first one is from Edna Stonebrook and Clyde Carruthers, co-owners of the largest truck farm in Argentina, South America. Their truckers are on a strike and the owners have had to do their own work for the past week. From the jungles comes the second telegram. Hunting in Africa has kept Bill Whyde, famous game hunter, and his guide, LaVerne Plants, from our festivities. They are tracking down a prehistoric Brontosaurus 65 feet long and 12 feet high. We all wish them success. Foreign correspondents, Bill Sayre, John Shaw and Dean Tedrick cable that they have been detailed in Russia collecting phases of the average Russian's life for their paper the Newcomerstown Tribune owned by James Dorsey. The last on the program of the evening's entertainment is the great Merto- politan Opera Soprano, Maxine Julien, accompanied by the famous violinist, Herman Horn, and the orchestra. The evening draws to a close. The memories of N.H.S. have been recalled, and with a feeling of joy mingled with sadness we all rise to join our voices in singing our Alma Mater song L'Loyalty . H. S. COACHES IN CONFERENCE Robert McCracken, Football Coach: Eugene Riffle, Junior High Coach: Donald Wolff, Assistant Coach: William Durtschi, Basketball Coach. The thermometer stood at 96 degrees when Newcomerstown Trojan football candidates reported to Coach Robert McCracken for practice in August of 1948. Although the sun beat down unmercifully on the perspiring gridmen, they went through their limbering up paces with enthusiasm. Fifty candidates showed up for the first session. This number increased when school started. Coach McCracken, assistants William Durtschi and Don Wolff, and the players faced one of the most difficult schedules in the history of the school. The Trojans rated high in weight, height, and heart, but they were short in experience. Only six lettermen were available: Dar- rel Beiter, halfback, Dick Hannahs, end, Harold Bootiei' Moore, tackle, Jim Nay, center, and Bill Whyde and Jerry Stokes, guards. In the opening game the Trojans scored first but lost 6-2 to Boys Industrial School of Lancaster. When B. I. S. attempted to punt during the third quarter, Stokes blocked the kick to give N. H. S. a safety. , The Trojans played one of their best games of the year in the second half of the Mans- field Madison contest. Madison took an early 13-0 lead. In the third quarter N. H. S. opened up with a touchdown drive from their own 17. Beiter carried the ball over for the score. The game ended: Madison 15, Newcomerstown 6. Uhrichsville turned back the Trojans 20-0 when they invaded the Tigers' lair. The fol- lowing week Newcomerstown lost to the Ohio School for the Deaf, 18-12. Carr and Beiter scored the N. H. S. touchdowns. The Trojans lost the homecoming game at Circleville 32-0, and the following Friday night dropped a 48-6 decision to Canton South. Beiter passed to Lehman for the N. H. S. touch- down in the second period. Although the Trojans gained eight first downs to Carrollton's five, they lost to Car- rollton 19-0. Three N. H. S. scoring threats were stopped near the goal line. The Cadiz game was a thriller in which the Trojans got their first taste of victory, 13-12. Cadiz scored twice in the first quarter. In the second, Newcomerstown recovered a fumble on the 30 and drove to a touchdown, Beiter making the six-pointer. With less than two minutes left in the game, Stokes recovered another fumble on the Cadiz 8. Beiter made the touchdown and Nay plunged for the game-winning extra point. .E Two thousand spectators crowded into FOOTBALL MANAGERS IN Athletic Field .for the season's finale with Den- EQUIPMENT ROOM fl1SO1'1: The Ra1lTO8dCTS VVOT1 S. had Gail Rice, Bob Ray, Harold Hoffman five first downs and Dennison had seven.
