MX ls Leslie Besst Dr. C. A. Hanson Earl Titus Otto Beiter John Atkinson Frank Powell What the citizens of the next generation will be, the schools of today will largely determine, and what the schools are, school boards largely determine. In every state the legislature of the state and the people of the local communities have delegated the school boards the responsibility of seeing that the schools are adminisered efficiently and according to the laws of the state. It can be truth- fully said that there is no more important work than serving as a school board member, and there is no work which requires greater wisdom, more patience, more common sense, and greater devotion to a cause. School boards have under their directin the most important, the most technical, and the most diffi- cult public business. Besides, more money is spent on the schools, more people are employed in them, and more people are affected by them than by any other local and public undertaking. Superintendent of Schools D. B. BOEDER The superintendent of schools is the chief executive of the school system. He makes recommendations to the Board of Education on the adopting of school policies when formulated by the board of education. He directs and assigns teachers and other employees of the schools under his supervision. He assigns pupils of the schools under his jurisdiction to the proper grades. He acts as purchasing agent in conjunction with the Board of Education in the securing of all school supplies. He furnishes educational and financial leadership to the Board of Education and the community. He appraises the work of the teachers and keeps the Board of Education informed regarding the work of the schools. SEVEN I 5 Sian i . fi Gi. if ?acultq X 4? if xt. You remember the class of '47? But of course you do! Last evening, in the New York Herald, edited by Jeanne Byrd, I read that the class of 1947 had passed away, that is the class as a whole, not the students. The funeral, which was held in the New York Cathedral, was most beautiful, but most sad. The ceremony began with the girls' choir of Wittenburg College singing Nearer, my God, to Thee , under the direction of Miss Susan Sal- ring the solo Open the Door, Richard was then sung by the Metropolitan Opera star, Miss Jean Besst. Throughout the ceremony the organ was played by Miss Betty Atha, Director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The scripture was read by Lt. Robert Hannahs, of the U. S. Army Medical Corps. He arrived from Fresno, California, by plane. During his trip East he met an old shoolmate, Miss Betty Mason, who is an air hostess on the Erwin-Fivecoat airline. Rev. C. W. Gates of Des Moines, Iowa, officiated during the service. Rev. Gates and his wife, Mrs. Norma Beall Gates, who recently resigned her position as supervisor of the Dr. Brown Laboratory Technician School in Columbus, Ohio, are spending a few days at the Long Island home of Miss Mary Kay Powell, who is Professor of Dramatics at MacMurray. The pallbearers at the funeral were: Congressman Kenneth Duha- mel, Representative of the 16th District of Ohio, Mr. Wayne Egler, Manager of the Doughy Goods Bakery in Peoli, Kansas, Mr. Gerald Liggett, owner of the Hop In and Go Taxi Company in St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Richard Emler, a driver for the Greyhound Bus lines, Mr. John Taylor, editor of the Poultry Journal in Kimbolton, Kentucky, and Mr. Gene Whyde, district manager of the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. The funeral was conducted under the supervision of I-Iaver's Morbid Morgue Company. Mr. Dean Neal, assistant to Mr. Haver, drove the hearse on its eighteen mile procession to the Tumble In cemetery. Mr. John Irwin, vault manufacturer for the Welcome Cemetery, contributed the vault. The ceremony was broadcast over radio station WLW CWiller, Lindell, Wolff J. Miss Jean Nay announced the ceremony in her usual kind and sympathetic voice. As the procession moved on to the last resting place of this illustrious class, photographs were taken by the Thompson Studios. TWENTY-TWO Those attending from out of town were as follows: Misses Rhea Lou Evans and Evelyn DeRing, instructors at the Scribble Art School in Chi- cago, accompanied by Miss Geraldine Dansby, a very promising student of modern art, Misses Betty Hayward and Shirley Curby, owners of the Pull In and Fill Up restaurant in Hollow-Skull Canyon, Nevada, Mrs. Mary Jurin and husband from Montreal, Canada, who are spending a few weeks with relatives in Brooklyn, Misses Charlotte Conrad, Norma Chaney, and Grace Chapman, owners of the C. C. C. CCome, Curl, Cutel Beauty Parlor. Others present were: Misses Marie Norman and Josephine Gal- braith, proprietors of the Family Night Theater in Seattle, Mr. Jim Schlarb, who recently bought the famous Stork Club , Miss Mae John, a newly discovered star in the new production Gone With John which was produced by MGM CMason, Grey, Medleyl under the direction of Miss Novella Dennis, Mr. Duane Smith, renouned veterinary surgeon of Animals' Repair Shop , Nashville, Tennessee, accompanied by Miss Jean James who is his assistant in charge of the Poodle-Doodle Ward, Miss Beverly Dorsey, a hostess at the luxurious Hotel Marlatt of Buffalo, Coach Edwin Ray of West Point, Misses Bonnie Addy and Dolores Loveless, super- visors of the University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and Miss Gloria Loder, owner of the Load-her-Gun Factory. Also attending the service were: Mr. R. J . Roe, Superintendent of McKinley High School and Misses Betty Hughes and Betty Covic, teachers of Physical Education at McKinley, Miss Suzanne Lyons, psychology teacher from Boston University, and Miss Betty Ogle, founder of the Tire- some Rest Home in Akron. , The majority of those attending spent the week at the home of the fabulously rich widow Mrs. Doris Fillman Vanderbilt on Park Avenue. Doris and her friend Miss Joy Clough, a well known dress designer, plan to leave soon to spend a few weeks in Paris. Well, Hubert, this is the man part of the article. There was also the statement that the Class Will would be published in the next issue. I will write and tell you about it in my next letter. I cannot ind words to express my feelings at this sorrowful occur- rence. I know you will feel the same as I do about losing such a wonderful class. Although the Senior Class has passed on, the spirit of '47 will live on forever. That's just the way the N. H. S. football season opened with a smashing victory over Mt. Vernon. The final score being 39-0. Every- thing worked perfectly under the Single Wing and T formations. Our opening victory spurred our team on to the ever hoped for goal of becoming county champs. The determination resulted in the second victory of the season when our foes from Barnesville were downed by a score of 18-0. Carr, Jurin and Warren got their share of the touchdowns, as usual, along with excellent blocking by the line. With these two victories chalked-up, we now began the task of preparing for the game against Uhrichsville. Every boy worked hard be- cause we wanted to avenge the defeat suffered at the hands of the Tigers last year. It was a hard fought game all the way through, the Trojans gaining 167 yards and the Tigers 145 yards from scrimmage. The Trojans finally bowed to the Yellow and Black to the tune of 39-6. Slightly disappointed, but not down-hearted about the Uhrichsville game, we started right into our nightly drills preparing for the Dresden game. The Trojans came out on top by 41-6, The Dads were introduced as part of the half-time program. Having chalked-up three wins and one loss, we plunged into our half- way season game by downing Bellaire St. Johns 60-0, avenging the game played at Bellaire in '45, All reserves saw action in this game. SIXTY ED RAY, JIM SCHLA LMAR MARLATT, KENNETH WOLFF, JOHN IRWIN DON WARREN, A MCKAY, DEAN NEAL, DON WALTERS, DICK JURIN sfg 0 Having passed the mid-season mark we got down to serious busi- ness preparing for our annual Homecoming game with Millersburg. At the end of the turf party the Orange and Black came out well ahead by 52-0. Touchdown-bound Trojans marred the annual Carrollton high homecoming by overwhelming a Black and White eleven 45-O. Jurin and Warren set the pace in the touchdown parade. Having racked up six victories and one loss, we then journeyed to meet the once defeated Cardinals of Cadiz. The Trojans showed a marked superiority in statistics, making 11 first downs to Cadiz 6, but Cadiz played alert ball in the pay off department winning 19-6. Then we trained hard for the traditional game with Dennison. The N. H. S. Trojans ran into luck as dismal as the weather in our final football game of the 1946 season when Dennison's Railroaders nosed us out 21-19. We have six Seniors who leave us this year. They are as follows: Eddie Ray, center, John Irwin, right guard, Delmar Marlatt, centerg Jim Schlarb, right tackle Kenneth Wolff, endg Dean Neal, left tackleg and Senior Cheerleaders: Charles Gates, Dolores Loveless, and Novella Dennis. The 1946 team rates as one of the best elevens ever to play for N. H. S., and with better breaks their record would have been even more impressive. The season ended 6 wins and 3 losses, placing the Trojans on top with the best record in the county. On the basis of past personal performances the outlook for the season could be termed at best only mediocre. However, from the start of the first ball game the teamwork, the speed, and the passing ability of this group of Trojans con- founded, astounded, and bewildered their opponents. The victory string reached an unheard of total of ten straight and the Trojan record began to draw attention from all corners of the state. All good things come to an end sooner or later and the Trojans bowed in defeat to Uhrichsville. Their efforts here and in the remaining games were dogged by that 'ole 'debbil' Ilu. However, they did manage to compile the greatest record for a Trojan basketball team in the history of the school. Their record, when the books were finally closed on the season, showed 16 games won and four lost, a feat we proud of and we feel will leave a very high mark for future Tro clubs to aim to equal or to break. Jr. Hifi: Semen 0 1946-194 7 The J -V season in basketball was characterized by the fact that one could expect the unexpected. Their play over the course of a season ranged from superb to very disappointing. They somehow managed to knock off the big ones and then get themselves tramped into the dust by the little ones. The cause we can not label satisfactorily. However, over the course of the season we have noticed the improvement of Phil Mardis, Sonny Williams, Bill Whyde, Harry Little, and Eddie Carr. We earnestly feel they will have something to contribute to future Trojan victories with thc adidfed year of growth and experience gained under the coaching of Mr. Ri le. xg, FIRSTROW: Don Kohl, Raymond Williams, Eddie Carr, Harry Little, Phillip Mardis. Truthfully it can be said we have enjoyed the present Jr. High season. It was marked by the development of boys who have been known for a long time in athletics. The many handicaps they had to face and surmount can and will aid them to future Wins on a high school ball club.
