Mr. Whitmer Mr. Roeder The students and teachers have been equally proud of the part our school has played in the bond drive sponsored by the Treasury Department. Bob wos noted for his ability to break up line ploys. Herbert Bundy Center Herbie played in oil but two minutes the entire season, thus making him the iron man of football. He was very good on defense. Earl Hewitt Right Guard Because of Bud's grand playing on either offense or defense he will be hard to replace. Lorin Hannahs Right End Lorin had only one year of varsity football but his ability as a blocker made him invaluable. Harold Schlarb Right Half Though this was Schlar-bie's first year he was an expert passer and runner. Marvin Lawver Left End With his sticky fingers and good sense, few plays went around Marvin. Jack De Long Left Guard This was Jack's first year in football, but he was always in there backing the center of the iine. Bob Leonhard Quarterback Called plays, and could be depended on to do a good job in passing or punting. This Page Sponsored by HELLER BROTHERS CO. J'iqhL —J'iqkL! Bill Bean Left Half Though Bill played only one year of football he got his N, and made plenty of yardage. Leslie Early Right Half Les was known for his trick running and his punting. Incidentally he wos the smallest boy on the team. Harold Hannahs Fullback Scrub was out of many games because of injuries, but when he was in there his tackling, running, and blocking were worth watching. Bob Laughlin Left End This wos Bob's first year in football, but he accounted for many Trojan points. A good man on defense. Tom Daugherty Left Halfback Tom is a sophomore but has earned two letters. He was known for his long runs. Tom can be properly called a triple threat man. Dale Rice Right Half Another sophomore who made good. His running always caused a headache on the opposing team. Where do these sophomores get their strength? Our managers, Cy Hoot-man and Jim Booth, were the little men who were always there. While their work doesn't bring glory, what would the team have done without them? 1 1 This Page Sponsored by HELLER BROTHERS CO. Owl J cuvl 0 0 0 The Newcomerstown Trojans were a green team this year. The cause was lack of experience and the loss of the usual spring practice. Even with these setbacks they started the season with a great showing. However when the teams became tougher they felt their drawbacks. At the end of the year the opponents tallied 1 84 points; N.H.S. trailed with a total of 58 points. FIRST ROW. We were lucky in getting Coach Angus Wilson to instruct our teams this year. Mr. Wilson will long be remembered for his actions at football games; He always trotted up and down the sidelines, tearing his hair and beating his breast when things did not go our way. His friendly manner made him one of the most popular teachers in the school. (JaAAih YL . . . FIRST ROW: Bob Laughlin, Jim Booth, Bob Kohler, Dick Wilkin, Harold Hannahs, Bob Haver. Glancing over them quickly, I glimpse a familiar postmark and dropping the others, I open it and find an invitation to the annual N. H. S. alumni banquet—the first to be held since the war. I must make arrangements to attend. Ten years since we graduated—a short time it seems, but much has happened and I wonder how many will be there. I hear infrequently from severdl of my old classmates. The Grays (Lucille Hughes) are happily married and are living in Washington, D. C. In my last letter from Esther Treasure she was in California where she and her husband are spending the winter. Nella Rose Budd, after graduating from the Cleveland Art School, has been employed as head designer in a New York fashion salon. Marjorie Norman models at the same establishment. Joanne Lieser is also located in New York as teacher of the violin in the Juilliard School of Music. Glancing over the New York Times last week I read an editorial written by Les Early on This Operatic World. It seems as though Alice Davis has proved a great sensation in the operas. Her brother, Mitchell, is American consul to Spain. Graduating as we did during the war, the armed forces took several of our class; Bob Deeslie joined the Navy and since the war is commander of a Mosquito boat. Harold Schlarb joined the air force and now is a commercial pilot. Marvin Lawver, also a pilot, has chosen to remain in the army and is stationed in the Philippines where Bob Richmond has just opened a night club with Martha Covic as his jitterbug dancer. The three musketeers of our class, Lester Swigert, Jack Jurin, and Gene Hootman joined the Marines. They liked the service so well that they re-enlisted and are now part of the new world police force and are stationed in Europe. Earl Hewitt, who worried so much about the rubber problem in the war, is now manager of the new Dandelion Rubber factory in England. His chief chemist is none other than Jimmie Williams. In Yugoslavia are Norma Ray, Thelma Rector, Florence Hogue, and Edna Shalosky. These girls are teachers in a school for war orphans. Thelma Pappas is a nurse with the American Red Cross in Russia. I hear she likes her work very well. Maxine Peoples married an English planter and now lives in India. Another student to be proud of is Jack DeLong who is now ambassador to Mexico. Not all are abroad. Some have chosen to make their marks in their own community. Earl Carruthers has gained fame as the breeder of Angus cattle, and Max Robinson has one of the largest dairy farms in Tuscarawas county. Bill Bean is manager of the Baltimore, and has Lorin Hannahs as assistant manager. Mary Van Syoc is buyer in the women's department while Ida Mae Hudson has charge of the children's department. I hear Newcomerstown is called upon often by a Swift and Co. salesman who is none other than Bill Palmer. The new Kroger store is being managed by Roger Bliss who has hired as his clerk, Helen Simmerman. If you see a redheaded policeman, he will be Earl Stoffer—he has been elected chief of the police force under mayor Ralph Tilton. In the latest college bulletins I see that Jean Marshall is Dean of Women at Smith, and Jean Palmer is music instructor at Oberlin. Another guy whom we know as Cy Hootman has a large laboratory in California. Helen Maxwell and Norma Craigo both had their school day wishes come true. Helen is superintendent of nurses at St. Lukes; Norma is at White Cross hospital in Columbus. Geraldine De Marco, who showed marked executive ability in high school, has just been appointed to the Supreme Court as the first woman judge in our history. I guess Bob Kohler is the leading citizen of Jacktown, and its only undertaker. Herb Bundy is the town's most prominent doctor and lives across the street from Bob. I hear they are running a race to see who gets the most business. 39 Just yesterday I saw Jim Booth's name in the sports column; he is the greatest coach Ohio State has ever had. His team is to play the great Notre Dame team which is coached by Sharkey Yanai. Another sports item told of Bob Leonhard's appointment as director of the National Sports program. In case some of you haven't read the latest edition of the Gush and Slush magazine edited by Lois Floyd, you should do so immediately. In it is an advertisement of Victor Medley's escort bureau for women. I hear that Mary Lou Murphy is his secretary. If you want to have a good time see the Ringling Brothers Circus managed by Sonny Scott. Selling tickets will be Louise Black. Esther Wilson will be playing her clarinet in the band, and Claribel Robe will be the bareback rider; Mary Mollenkop will appear as the young woman on the flying trapeze. Another rider who does marvelous stunts is Ellis Booth. I suppose you all know Jean Ames is Dale Baker's secretary; Dale is head of the C.I.O. Norma Robinson, Irene Morris, and Doris Norman are working in a beauty parlor in Chicago which is owned by Martha Buck. I got a thrill the other day, when turning on my television set, to see and hear the Bethel twins on the Rinso show, Guess Which. Raymond Hill is their announcer. Even though there were complaints about the WAACS and WAVES, they are still popular. Lieut. Dorothy Elliott is an instructor at Des Moines and Ensign Adeline Beahm is at Pautucket. When taking a friend of mine to the station the other day I saw Charles Ames and Jesse Hunt engineering the New York Ltd. Carol Adams was also on the train—she is touring the country making speeches about 4-H clubs; sitting across the aisle was Gene Goodall, inspector of the Frenzy Wenzy chain stores. Anne Rothenstein has a new interior decorating shop on Fifth Avenue. Gladys Dorsey is Dick Wilkin's secretary since Dick has become head of the Lumpy-Dumpy coal company. Dick Folkert, Ermil Gadd and Willard Grewell own a cattle ranch in Texas. Remembering my classmates like this has made me doubly sure that I will attend the banquet. 40 —Roberta Shurtz CLoaa. U)ilL We the seniors of the class of 1943, not being of sound mind or body do solemnly leave the following— Louis Hootman leaves his A's to anyone who is lucky enough to get them. The three musketeers, Bob Leonhard, Bob Kohler, Henry Yanai, leave Miss Thompson breathing a sigh of relief. Mary Lou Murphy and Norma Craigo leave their school spirit to Helen Lower and Jerry Wilkin. The Senior Class gives Uncle Sam the boys in our class—but only for the duration. Lucille Hughes leaves her beauty to Gloria Hilderbrand. The 1943 Newcosean staff leaves next year's staff well-supplied with aspirin. From the class treasury we leave Miss Miller money for a pair of sound proof ear muffs. And of course we shall leave the gum on the seats in Study Hall, although there is a shortage.
