This page is sponsored by NEWCOMERSTOWN FLORAL CO. and MOOSE LODGE Trojan Coaches PHILIP BIKLE EUGENE RIFFLE HAROLD PETERS Head Coach Philip Bikle, in his first year as chief mentor, brought us our first Eastern Ohio League football championship with an almost perfect season of eight wins and one loss. The Basketball record was equally outstanding with thirteen victories to five set backs. Coach Bikle also has introduced a fine intramural system inviting stiff competition between classes in basketball and softball. Assistant Coach Eugene Riffle finishes his fifth season as an assistant coach and his third year as Reserve Basketball coach with eleven wins and seven losses. Under Mr. Riffle's coaching for three years, this junior varsity has come up with many good prospects for the coming years. Assistant Coach Harold Peters completes his second year as assistant football coach and freshman basketball coach. Pete has played a vital part in both departments. His work with the freshmen has shown definite results as has his conditioning of the Trojan football teams with calisthenics. This page is sponsored by OXFORD BANK and L. H. BARNETT CO. Football Season Philip Bikle is the coach, Harold Peters is the assistant, and this is the array of football talent: Little, McFarland, Cunningham, Wolff, Curtiss, Booth, Hanson, Kohler, Gaynor, Leonhard, Hewitt, Harrison, Snyder, and Daughtery— comprising what has turned out to be the first championship team that New-comerstown High School has ever produced—Eastern Ohio League Co-Cham-pions of 1941. In winning eight out of nine games, the Trojans won more games than have ever been won by any Newcomerstown football team. The formation of the Eastern Ohio League in 1940 with our principal, Mr. Tipton, one of the originators and first president of the league, makes this Championship possible. The Trojans record over their four league opponents were victories over Uhrichsville, 12-9; Carrollton, 39-0 (Homecoming game); Cadiz, 19-12; and the lone defeat to Dennison, 25-13. Highlighting the season were the spectacular running jaunts of the two ace senior backs , McFarland and Little, the latter receiving one of the halfback positions on the United Press All Ohio High School Team. The other senior Trojans are: backs Wolff and Gaynor; lineman , Curtiss, Hanson, Cunningham, Snyder, and Harrison. The entire team showed a new brand of tackling for keeps and hard, determined blocking that paid out in full with the first championship. This page is sponsored by JEFFERSONIAN SOUTHEASTERN OHIO'S GREAT HOME DAILY Class Prophecy Barbara Hanson « « Bob’s Dream I suppose you know all about high school and high school students, you have lived it, slept it, breathed it, and eaten it, until it has become your very existence, and mine. I suppose that a condensed list of your ideas about the mysterious future that is in store for all of us when we leave this happy camping ground is something each and every one of us would like to know. Interesting events and happening follow one another so closely that we cease to marvel at every day occurrences. Even the course of our graduation comes under the list of regulations, but when Bob Gaynor fell asleep in Miss Brewer's study hall, the high school, students, teachers and all, moved mysteriously into the future. The room was comparatively quiet, there was only on occasional whisper accompanied by the scratching of many pencils, which soon mysteriously changed into a gentle sound as wind rustling through the trees. But soon the wind blew stronger and stronger, until it finally entered the room as a roaring gale. At that moment Bob began to keep pace with the wind and was carried out through space into an era of time in the future. Passing over these years into the happenings of 1950, he felt that he was dreaming. He had a strange floating sensation. Puzzled, he did the usual thing people do when they want to be sure they are awake. He pinched himself! He was awake! He felt it and it hurt! He rubbed his pinched arm and stood on his feet. Oh sit down, the floor show is just coming on! Bob turned to see who had spoken to him. Things seemed strange, yet natural, for he knew that he owned this night club and the voice was Wallace Curtiss', his pal from high school days. Wally'', now the owner of International Streamliners Railway, Incorporated, was sight seeing in Hollywood. For this was Hollywood! Everybody comes here sooner or later, to visit or to stay. Bob sat down. I'm sure glad to see you, 'Curt', it's almost like being back in school. Why only last week Doris Wilkin dropped in with her wealthy playwright husband, and of course you heard that Ann Russell's new picture has just been released. All her hair styles were the creation of Helen Bliss, who is now Mademoiselle d'Coiffure. Bob Cohran, the colossal producer, director and usher of The Unrevealing Picture Corp., was also her publicity agent. Of course you've noticed the gorgeous atmosphere inside my night club. I must tell you that it is all due to the magnificent work of Lura Lee McPeek, who is quite well known for her interior decorations. You should have been here last week, ’Curt', we held a party for my night club's third anniversary, and it turned out to be a regular 'old home week'. Virginia Laughlin, Jo Ann Trees and Phyllis Neal dropped in after a tour of Unrevealing Studios. Jo Ann is private secretary to Baldy, Baldy, Baldy and Fuzzy Hair Tonic, Inc., and she and Virginia have been offered screen contracts. Phyllis has prospered greatly in her work as technician in Dr. Willie Belch's office, Columbus, Ohio. Norma Miller, who was chosen Miss America, 1945, was also present at the party. Packy McFarland, head coach at University of Solid-aize, arrived with Suzy Gainor, teacher at Cheater High. Their engagement was publicly announced last month . At this moment in walked Clarice Britton, recent widow of a multi-millionaire. She was swathed in lovely furs, which she informed us came from Gordon DeMarco's Odoriferous Skunk Farm in the East. Clairce was in the company of Chester Hanson, who had obtained fame as the Ace of all Hearts in the U. S. Army Air Corps. Whizz—What was that? Bob seemed to be slowly drifting away. Where was his beautiful night club, and why was he on a transport plane? Oh, Yes! Of course it was all right now—he was taking a trip to New York. That was funny, he thought sure he knew the pilot of the plane. Oh yes, it's Francis This page is sponsored by TICKHILL SERVICE STATION and DENNISON COCA COLA Moore. For goodness sake, will you look at the stewardess? It's Gloria Norris, registered nurse, who graduated from Colorful U. Hello, Bob, I haven't seen you since we graduated. This was Charles Cunningham, who explained that he was taking a vacation from this farm in central Ohio. Bob arrived at Low Gap Air Terminal a little later and who should be there to meet him but Max Swigert, New York Patrolman, who took him safely to his hotel. Upon entering his room, he was confronted with a room full of people. One was Jack West. After an explanation, he proved to be a very determined Auto Salesman. And because Bob was in town without a car he offered to sell him one of his Super Machineless Mobiles. Then Bob conferred with Paul Harstine, who consented to deliver a quart of super-vitamized grade A to Z milk each day from his large dairy farm at Cheesy Acres. The door bell rang after his visitors had left and in stepped Ted Fletcher, prominent contractor and retractor. I just found out that you were here, Bob, so I dropped over to tell you all that's going on in New York. Did you read the paper this morning? There was a big write-up about Lloyd Craigo, who did a fine electrical engineering job on the reconstruction of Smoulder Dam. I came especially to ask you to attend the basketball game at the Gardens with me tonight. The Star players are Lee Hootman and Don Wolff. Soon Bob found Ted and himself riding horseback through the streets of New York. Somehow this, too, seemed natural, but he couldn't remember leaving his hotel. They came to Central park and a large building loomed up in front of them. The sign on the building read: The four-legged Healer, Animals Welcome. Veterinary Service. Inside was Bill Cochran frantically working his head off trying to save Mrs. Pandra Pancake's panda. Bill's office secretary, Eleanor Booth, was just ready to leave. At the telephone switchboard was Iris Lee Fowler. Across the hall was a door on which was written Arthur Twyman, Office Electrician. Service available when lights go out. Suddenly Bob found himself walking along in a large crowd toward a tent marked American Farmers Convention . When inside whom should he meet but Norman Baker, famous for his overgrown puckerless persimmons. Junior Clark and Merle Opphile, who have farms in central Ohio, were there with Glenn Gray, who encountered world fame for his suggestions about the Farm of Tomorrow . At this moment our dreamer felt the pangs of hunger and immediately found himself being served a delicious meal by Winifred Walters, curb service waitress at the Still-all-Inn . Martha Ellwood, it was disclosed, was head wait-tress at the Inn. After he had eaten, it seemed that force drove him to look in the window of the little Beauty Shoppe across the street. There was Elizabeth Wilson, the owner, waving the hair of her best customer, Eleanor Schworm. Things seemed to be moving faster now—poor Bob was jumping from one place to another. He had never seen this building before, and look at that sign on the doorl J. R. McFadden, Lawyer Supreme: Councilor for guiltless criminals. Now where was he? Oh yes, in a night club owned by Pat Fletcher, Martha Mae Neal and Evastine Rice. Pat occasionally entertained her own guests with a song, while Martha sometimes acted as M. C. But what was going on in the other room? Goodness, A Housewives convention! There was Anna Margaret Gamble, who recently married an Ohio Farmer, and with her was Mrs. Harold Thompson (Frances Smith). In the corner of the room discussing something with Mrs. Fred Booth (Nova Baker) were Mrs. Carl Milligan (Phyllis Lower) and the recent brides Eileen Gross and Rhea Moore. Flash! Anne Heller, American writer, recently won world-wide acclaim for her best seller “The Inside Dope'. Bob's head was going around. He was now walking down the street. He bumped into some people. Well! Winona Porter and Audry Stalter, they had married wealthy brothers and were shopping in New York. There was Doro- This page is sponsored by SEIDEL-FARRIS, INC., ENGRAVERS FOR NEWCOSEAN thy Krebs, personal secretary to Jeanne Stewart, of movie fame. He soon found himself reading a sign in front of the Broadway Theater; Ruth J. Smith, starring in All Feet Behind . Bob felt the urge to start back to Hollywood, but he knew he must make the rounds of New York first. Stepping into a taxi, he was suprised to find that the driver was Arthur Vierheller. Stopping at a gas station, he found the attendant to be Kenneth Martin, and the mechanic at the station was Frank Barthalow. Leaving the station he was driven to the door of New York Designers, Inc., and he soon found himself inside where Francis Gunn was sitting at the president's desk. In the outer office were his private secretary, Audra McClary, and his office stenographer, June Jaynes. Next Bob found himself being whisked to Radio City Music Hall where the famous precision dancers, the Skyrockets, were dancing. Mercy! One of the dancers tripped. He recognized her to be none other than Barbara Hanson. There sitting beside Bob were Geraldine Mackey and Ruth Haver, brides of 1945. Bob was suddenly at the airport again and found he was talking to Roberta McLaughlin, who was about to leave for her home in the South, and Ruth Cordry, taking a vacation from her job as a private secretary. Also at the airport were Earl Gibson, a machinist, and Bob Bundy, one of the pilots. Harold Haver was there talking to Herb Moore, recently chosen stage manager of the Whirligig chorus. Telephone operator at the airport wasArthella Rice. Boarding the plane, Bob found Betty Budd and Joan Webb, registered nurses, who were returning to work at the Merciless Hospital. He was about to speak to them when suddenly the plane lunged downward. Crash!! Help! Get me out of here. We'll all be killed. Bob, for goodness sake get up from the floor. You should know better than to sleep in study hall. It served you right.” Gee, Miss Brewer, I had a wonderful dream, was Bob's only reply, as he turned sheepishbly to his studies. SS Will We, the Senior Class of 1942, being of questionable soundness of mind do hereby bequeath to the classes that will follow in our faltering footsteps the following: The seniors leave Miss West in a stew. Chester Hanson wills a perfect bridge hand to anyone who is interested. Bob Gaynor gives up his doughnut cutter to the Home Ec. Class. Martha Mae Neal leaves her wisecracks to Bill Palmer. Packy relinquishes his appetite to Bob Leonhard. The Seniors leave all their unfailing energy to the under-classmen. Clarice Britton bequeaths that wide awake look to someone who goes to bed earlier. Bob McFadden leaves his scholastic record to Bob Dieslie. Virginia Laughlin joyously leaves her aversion to red to Mary Lou Murphy. Frances Smith wills her good looks to Marian Watson. Wallace Curtiss leaves that innocent look to Johnny McPherson. Suzy Gainor relinquishes her ability to get her man to anyone who needs it. Lloyd Craigo leaves Miss West. Lee Hootman gives his basketball ability to Lorin Hannahs. Barbara Hanson leaves all of her sophistication to Nella Rose Budd. Evastine Rice bequeaths her strut to Peggy Gainor. Bill Cochran passes his eye for horses on to Martha Reynolds. Room 102 leaves Mr. Peters heaving a sigh of relief. AND CONFECTIONARY School Days of the Past With the graduating of the class of 1942 the Newcomerstown Alumni Association adds the sixtieth class to its roll. The first class was graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1880 with five students receiving diplomas from a two-year teacher's course. The next class was graduated in 1882 after completing three years of high school. From that time on classes were graduated each year with the exception of 1895, when the high school course was changed from three years to four. Three buildings have housed the high school in the sixty-two years of its existence. The first was the Union School, on College Street, built in 1856. One room on the second floor of the building was used for high school classes until a second building was erected directly behind it in 1900. The old building was then moved from the lot and high school classes were held on the second floor of the new building. In 1924 the Newcomerstown High School building was erected on the corner of State Street and River Street. An addition was added to this building in 1936. C. T. Emerson served the schools as the first superintendent. He was followed by Christian Forney, Rev. H. Bickel, H. H. Porter, Rev. U. I. Knisely, R. W. Search, Joseph Rey, J. T. Duff, C. W. Elliott, C. A. Bagnell, J. T. Duff, E. E. Smock, B. R. McClelland, J. W. Jones, W. C. Cope, C. J. Foster, E. E. Smock, R. M. Marlowe, W. B. Hayes, and C. L. McMahan. It is believed that the first Alumni banquet was held in 1887 in the Town Hall, and a second banquet the following year. From this time until 1911 there was no definite Alumni Association. Since 1911 there have been annual meetings of the Alumni of N. H. S. Union School showing tower of new building being built behind it.
