The 1941 NEWCOSEAN A DAY AT N. H S NEWCOMERSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL NEWCOMERSTOWN, OHIO FOREWORD A day at N. H. S. begins with the raising of the flag. Students come early to attend club meetings and later for classes. Meetings of the faculty, Board of Education, basketball, and footb dl games keep everyone busy and interested. Each day spent leaves some happy memory of friendships and activities together. ? To Mildred Miller who spends her day at N. H. S. checking typing papers, giving dictation, and timing speed tests. With her wonderful sense of humor and heart of gold, she is a favorite of teachers and pupils alike. 3 Annua I Staff Natalie Bean Charles Smith -Twilva Black Mella Miller -Pauline Schlarb Joseph Taylor -Frank Sapp Miss Macmillan - - Editor-in-Chief - Business Manager - - Literary Editor - - - Senior Editor - Photograph Editor - - Athletic Editor - - Sales Manager - - - - Advisor 305 State Street NEWCOMERSTOWN, OHIO E I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Courtesy of Scholastic.. This alarming report spread like wildfire through the country on the morning of May 31, 1956. In the office of Max Smith, managing editor of the New York Times everything was in a turmoil because of preparations for a trip to Newcomerstown, Ohio, where a disasterous earthquake had almost demolished the city. Pat Hinds and Harold Swigert, special Times reporters, were busily making reservations with the American Air Lines for a chartered plane. They were being accompanied by Dr. Lores McAllister, noted archeologist, and his assistant, Eileen Dillehay. On their arrival at the airport, much to their surprise, they were met by their air hostess, Mella Miller who informed them that their pilot is none other than an old classmate—Earl Oaklief. After several hours, they were forced to land at the Pittsburgh Airport because of engine trouble. While mechanics Edson Cramlet and Harold Medley repaired the engine, the party enjoyed lunch in the airport tearoom being graciously received by Jeannette Stewart, the manager. Members of her staff were Carol Steffen, head cook, Betty Milligan and Marjorie Sharrock, waitresses. After the brief visit with these friends, Pilot Oaklief announced that the piane was ready to continue the trip. As they climbed out of the plan at the airport in New Philadelphia, Ohio, they had difficulty in obtaining transportation to Newcomerstown. As they were discussing their plight, a shiny red Cadillac convertible drove into the parking space. None other than Mr. and Mrs. John Barcroft (Janie Best) alighted from the car. They had come to meet Mr. Walter Ralph and his confidential secretary, Miss Dorothy Asher who were home on a visit from government service in South America. After a happy reunion, the entire group decided to go down to Newcomerstown together. Upon arriving there, they were met by State Patrolmen Walter DeLong and Robert Bond who gave them a hearty welcome. Little did the old home town look like it had a few years before. Many new buildings that had been erected were now in ruins. As they walked down Main Street, the first thing to attract their attention was the ruins of what was formerly a beauty parlor operated by Betty Davidson and Pauline Schlarb. The building was owned by Robert Gray, a local banker. The next sight of serious damage was the DeLuxe Department Store owned and operated by Carl Schlarb. His ladies' buyer was Betty Lehman while the buyer for men's clothing was Robert Edwards. The bookkeeper was capable Hope Johns. On Park Hill, overlooking the town was a beautiful new hospital recently completed by the Charles F. Hill Construction Company. Being away from the main section of damage, it was being used to care for the injured. Dr. Charles Smith was head of the staff of physicians with Victor Lenzo and Max Cooley resident doctors. The staff of nurses included Evelyn Emler, superintendent, Ruth Rector and Kathleen Buck. One of the most seriously injured persons was Joseph Taylor, local dairyman who was driving down Main Street at the time of the accident. Anxious to see their old high school (which was not damaged at all) they 40 SOME TIME Senior Class Prophecy arrived at the building just in time for a special assembly. Principal John Robe addressed the group on the subject of Why We Do What We Do When We Do It. Following the address, Judy Cross, talented daughter of the Wayne Crosses, sang a solo entitled “O Where Is Spring? Miss Edith Smith, dramatics teacher announced that Junior Play rehearsal would follow the assembly. She also mentioned the fact that the play was written by Betty Lou Conrad, a former student of N. H. S. After the assembly, the group visited the Home Economics laboratory where Miss Betty Burdette was instructor. Upon leaving the building, they waved to Ralph Little, janitor. The last place they visited was the Twyman Tool Manufacturing Company where they met Robert Twyman, President of the firm. He told them that Thelma Gross, his private secretary was spending her vacation in California. Frank Sapp was doing a splendid job as general manager. The head of the office force was Mary Scott while her staff consisted of Ruth Ott, Betty Woods, Wilma Bliss, Florence Best, and Martha Hill. Road salesmen for the company were Bill Hannahs, Gerald Norman, John Postel, and Eugene Hoffman. Having visited these many places of interest, they were almost exhausted and decided to return to New Philadelphia to have dinner. While driving down Grand Boulevard, the Barcrofts pointed out a beautiful home saying that Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ramsey (Mildred Hill) lived there. They also said that Mrs. Ruby (Lillian) spends her spare time telling stories in the kindergarten department of the Children's Home. A new city market was being opened by Lorin Schworm, Marvin Lindell, Clarence Miller, and Thomas Orr. Grace Ross was presenting carnations to the ladies while Kenneth Porcher graciously served samples of cake from the T ry-It-Once-Bakery. After dinner, the group said their farewells and parted. Harold bought an issue of Every Day News to read on the return trip to New York. It turned out to be much more interesting than he had expected. On page four bold letters announced the big hit of the week— Don't Keep Me Wondering starring Dorothea Wilkin as Connie. Just for fun, he decided to read the personals. Again he saw familiar names Elizabeth Barthalow, Cathryn Booth, and Wilma Hootman who are employed with the Century Finance Company, spent the week-end in Cleveland, Ohio with Mr. and Mrs. William Bodenhimer (Alice Mae Lindell). Other items of interest included the announcement of a local girl, Miss Jean Cunningham being received as a member of the New York Symphony Orchestra. On the society page a number of lovely dresses were designed for the June bride, the drawings being made by Delores Westphal. In sports he became very much interested to learn that Jim Brooks, all-time football hero was spending his fortune to sponsor a basketball team coached by the famous Kenny Miller. At last, they were again in New York. Their story of the damage suffered by Newcomerstown had been wired hours before and was being printed. They were tired but happy because they had seen so many friends from the class of 1941. 41 —Natalie Bean, Twilva Black. 9:10 a. m.
