Their support has come in many ways, but each time has seen us through to the ultimate success of whatever activity was then at hand. THE ANNUAL STAFF MESSAGE Ax -. , .44-Q Dear Seniors: I am sure that this has been a memorable year in the history of our schools. The rapid and continuous growth of our community has brought many new students into our schools during every week of the school year. I want to thank our oId students for their cordial and democratic acceptance of the new students and I want to tell the new students that they are very welcome here. Our school will probably never be quite the same again but the new growth will bring new responsibilities and opportunities. It is my sincere hope that we grow in quality as we grow in quantity, that we maintain a well balanced, friendly and efficient school. To our first oiI boom graduatesg the class of 1954, I extend my warmest personal regards and wish you unlimited success in its finest sense. Cordially, J. E. CROUCH SUPERINTENDENT S PRINCIPAL'S ' MESSAGE OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL NEWCASTLE HIGH SCHOOL NEWCASTLE, WYOMING Seniors of 1954: My message to you is one of continuing thanks for the cooperative spirit in which you have spent your high school career. In the years to come, I hope you will remember many of the problems we all faced as a group-those of overcrowded building and classes, and the resulting ever-changing curriculum. That these problems were sur- mounted with little real difficulty is a tribute to the cooperation of all concerned, but especially to the student body. It is my wish and my hope that each of you will find happiness and prosperity in the life you enter after graduation. CLASS HISTORY We of the Senior class of 1954, after completing our high school years, have com- piled this history of the '54 graduating class to better remember the events and activities of this period of our lives. We entered our first year of high school in the fall of 1950, full of the usual enthusiasm and ambition generally attributed to freshmen. The class was then composed of 72 members. The feeling of importance which was given us as high school students was dampened considerably by the process of initiation to which we were subiected. Our tormentors were the graduating class of 1953, then sophomores. The whole process was good-natured, however, and initiation day was enioyed by both initiated and the initiators. Our officers this year were: Noble Richards, President, Betty Updike, Vice President, Colleen Cool, Secretary, Bob Minter, Treasurer. Delegates to the Student Council, which was organized this year, were Pat Pool and Noble Richards. The task of sponsoring us was taken by Mr. Ratigan and Mr. Walker. One of the bright spots in our eventful freshman year, was the Carnival, spon- sored by the graduating classes of 1951 and 1952. The highlight of the Carnival was the crowning of Dan Hansen and Kathryn Craig, the freshman candidates, as King and Queen of the Carnival. This was accomplished by our class selling the greatest number of cake tickets in the annual Carnival cake raffle. As freshmen, we contributed our part to the annual Homecoming festivities by white-washing the N in the traditional manner. The freshman year was brought to a successful finish with our class picnic. The school year of 1951-1952 saw us back, wiser and more seasoned in the ways of high school, but undaunted in spirit and enthusiasm. The class was now composed of 70 members. Our officers this year were: Bob Slenker, President, Neal Purcelli, Vice President, Mauy .lo Hagius, Secretary, Robert Scott, Treasurer. Betty Jo Updike and Bob Slenker were delegates to the Student Council. Sponsor- ship of the class was assumed by Mr. Ratigan and Mr. Jahrman. As sophomores, we enioyed our position as freshman initiators, and planned elaborate initiation and kangaroo court ceremonies. The sophomore year brought with it the added responsibility of preparing a float for the Homecoming parade, which took the efforts of most of the class at 6 a.m. on the day of the celebration. The float, however, was deemed a success. The annual Carnival put forth its challenge again this year, and we nominated Bob Davis and Molly Monahan as candidates for Carnival King and Queen. We rose to meet the task of selling cake tickets, and again emerged victorious, with our candidates being crowned. The school year was once more brought to a close by our class picnic, and we were at the middle of our high school days, ready to become upperclassmen. This annual event was enioyed by all. Sponsored by the classes of 1954, the carnival consisted of the fair, where confetti, toy horns, games and fortune telling booths kept folks busy till floor-show time. The floor show with Bob Slenker as Master of Ceremonies, demonstrated high school talent. It contained several musical numbers by the triple trio and girls' trio, an old time mellerdrama play presented by the public speaking class, a record pantomime of I Know a Secret, by Lyle Ackley and Merline Thompson, a short- comedy pantomime, also by the public speaking class, record pantomimes by Myrna McMahon and Karen Peterson, results of the Cuantos Friioles contest sponsored by the Spanish Class, and, of course, the traditional freshman dance. Then came the much awaited climax of the carnival, the announcement of the carnival winners. The candidates for carnival King and Queen were: Senior-John Ellis, Judy Jones, Junior-Dale Moden, Francis Froner, Sophomore-Harry Pur- celli, Mary Hackworth, Freshman-Glen Henry, and Joyce Goff. The Seniors won the carnival raffle for the fourth straight year with a total of S52O.45, which was a record amount earned by any class, throughout the History of our school carnivals. After the crowning of King, John Ellis, and Queen, Judy Jones, a dance was held in the gymnasium for all who were able to attend. During the entire carnival, refreshments were served in the Home Economics room. Sponsored by BLACK HILLS COLD STORAGE and V. C. CHAPTER The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization of girls with a total membership of 367,46O. There are 8,54l chapters, with 54 of these chapters located in Wyoming. F.H.A. contributes to the growth and development of the individual girl as well as to her home and family. Our chapter consists of ninety members, two chapter mothers, Mrs. Dan Evan- der and Mrs. Lewis, two chapter fathers, Mr. Crouch and Mr. Weigher, and our advisor, Mrs. Elma Slenker. Big sister and chapter fathers, which were new proiects last year, were continued this year. The Co-ed Ball was held for the first time in our chapter. The neighbor- ing chapters were invited. Members of the chapters dressed as either a boy or a girl and came in pairs as dates. As state and national projects this year, we celebrated the World Christmas Festival and observed United Nations Day. The country chosen this year for our Christmas gift box was Greece. The World Christmas Festival party was held with Theo Vozakis as our guest speaker. Prizes were awarded for the best Greek costumes. An assembly consisting of a United Nations Day skit, and several musi- cal selections was given forthe students. Our chapter is evaluated through these and other proiects. As each proiect is com- pleted, a block in the outline of a house is filled in. When these blocks are com- pletely filled in, our chapter will be rated as an honor chapter. We are proud to relate that again this year we were an honor chapter.
