% . « . • V • - r ' • ,r ' • ? - ' ■ - , ' - ‘ MEMORIES Racer Memories of 1976-77 Another year gone by, the last for some, the beginning for many. All of us will remember it. The 140-page book you hold in your hands, a book of pictures and their story, is the contri- bution of the yearbook staff to your memories of Newcastle School. The staff has tried to capture a small portion of the memories each student has in his heart. All the moments—the good, the bad, the exhilarating, the disappointing—are now part of our lives. Hopefully, the year has been a full one for you; maybe there are some times you would like to forget; but we have felt a super year, one that we cherish. A yearbook is just a reflection of time, in which we see ourselves as we were and as we are now. Tomorrow depends on what we have learned in the past. As we grow older, we learn from our mistakes and profit from our accomplishments. The contents of this yearbook are our memories of the past and hopes for the future. It should mean even more to those of you who had a part in the actual production—all the people at Newcastle High School during the 76-77 school year. Now turn the pages and ... remember... The 1976-77 school year was a busy one for the high school chorus. The first con- cert presented in October was a success. The chorus traveled to various schools to present their Rock’n Roll music of the 50’s. The Madrigal Singers were selected to perform at the State Teachers Meeting in Tulsa. They performed at banquets, assemblies and other programs. The spring was filled with contests, State festivals, the musical at Ard- more and many trips. t ACCOMPANISTS: B. Coats, Drums; J. The editors are Jan Schaapveld and Sandy Upton. In addition to being responsible for the Pacesetter, the students were also responsible for news to go in the Blanchard paper. As the first semester came to a close Mrs. Thomason resigned, and Mrs. Bailey took over the second semester. The following students from the original class joined Mrs. Burnett for the class: Tisha Carter, Regina Moore, Teresa Lynn, Sandy Upton, Jan Schaapveld, and Tommy Gage. Due to the pressing yearbook deadlines one of Mrs. Burnett’s last year students, Lauri Crawford, was called in to help out. Working during the Christmas vacation, on teachers meetings, and after school was very hectic, but the staff finally got the yearbook sent in on time. We hope this yearbook helps all the students of New- castle High School to remember all the important memories of the school year 1976-77. Teresa Lynn, junior, was the editor of the “Racer Memories of 1976” yearbook. Mrs. Burnett, advisor of the yearbook, working to meet the March 11 deadline. The Stu- dent Council found itself with the responsibility of the homecoming parade and activities. The council planned several of the assemblies for the school, year, including the welcoming assembly at the first of the school year, movies, and the Christmas assembly. The council has sixteen members representing three classes and five school organ- izations. The Student Council is proud to be representing the Racer student body. FIRST ROW: M. Dougall-Sponsor, M. Instead of performing separate plays, Junior and Senior plays, the drama classes presented all the plays. The drama classes took quite a few trips this year. The first trip was to the Oklahoma Theatre Center—a three act performance by professional actors, “The Corn is Green.” The next trip was to Danny’s Day, a live television show. The drama classes were his guests. The last was to the Oklahoma University Drama Workshop. They saw the play “Our Town.” College students portrayed all the parts with the exception of one. The movie actor, Lew Ayers, was the narrator. The drama classes presented two three act plays, “Rest Assured,” and “Me and my Shadow.” They also put on six one act plays, “Sweet Sixteen,” “Bond Between,” “If Girls Ask Boys for Dates,” “Suzie was a Vampire,” “Oh Baby,” and “Shock of His Life.” Proceeds from the three act plays were divided between the Juniors and Seniors. Proceeds from the one act plays went to the Drama Department. I am your master!!!!!!!!!!” And she says don’t peek out the curtains!!!!!!!!!!” 30 Now, it saya here!!!!!!!!!! Friends, Romans, Countrymen!!!!!!!! Let me be the teacher for the day!!! This year the speech classes were taught by Mrs. Dougall. The first speeches were short and about them- selves. But as time went on they grew more accustomed to speaking in front of people, so Mrs. Dougall had them doing all kinds of speeches. The classes did pantomines, research speeches, and oral interpretation. They also did demonstrations. The demonstrations could be over almost anything the students wished. They had to do extemporaneous speeches and visual aid speeches. The students really enjoyed giving them after they realized it wasn’t so hard after all. Reading children stories! At first it seemed kind of silly to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. But after they got started, they really enjoyed getting down to a child’s level again. All in all speech class was a great experience for the stu dents. Do you think she will ask this question? Speech Class 31 I OE-New Course for NHS Mrs. Lane Sandy, Sharon, and Pam cooking in their 3rd hour Home Ec. class. The Home Economics classes were as busy as ever this year. The classes did everything from cooking and sewing to studying prenatal care. The classes also enjoyed working on their arts and crafts. Competing for a job is never a small task. However, high unemployment rates, coupled with the lack of qualified applicants, makes getting a good job a challenge. A new course, Vocational Office Education, is designed to help students better meet this challenge in the area of office occupations. Approximately forty juniors and seniors, one-fourth of them young men, enrolled in the morning and afternoon sections of the two-hour blocks, filling them to capacity. Equipment, books, and supplies were ordered; and students eagerly awaited the arrival of the IBM Selectrics, Dicta- phones, and electronic printing calculators and the reality of a “room of their own.” By mid-October, everything had arrived except the desks, which finally were delivered at the end of the first semester. Overnight the Typing I classes were moved to the room next door, and Room 2 became the VOE room. Interest areas were set up, and students were grouped accordingly. They worked for six-week periods on filing, machine transcription, calculators, 10-keys, duplicating, accounting, record keeping, and shorthand, progressing at their own rates. In addition everyone studied units in business English, spelling, postal and telegraph services, receptioning, telephoning, and office procedures. Students learned how to compile data sheets and portfolios, write application letters, and prepare for job interviews. Cooking and Sewitg in Home Ec. Traceye, and Debbie working on their VOE typing lesson. VOE group work is a challenge for the students. 32 Becky busy sewing in class NHS Trained Students in Skills The Sophomores really enjoy their Typing I class. Anita Wesnidge Gala, Rusty, and Jim work to finish their typing. General Business students enjoy watching a film. In the Business Department this year Typing I and General Business were the main classes offered other than VOE. These two business courses are designed to help a stu- dent when he gets out on his own while choosing a profession for himself. If taken advantage, these classes could prove to be helpful to a student later in life. Seems like book work is a must???? Lee Elrod working in General Business??? Cris Mason works on his macrame!!!! Jimmy and Frankie help each other out in Family Living. Mrs. Truitt I Tim works on his macrame, trying to finish!!!!!! Family Living this year was an experience to all who took the class. The class cooked main dishes and breakfasts. They also learned the basic fundamentals of macrame. The class had a career day which consisted of the students going to work with one of their parents or relatives. 33 Knowledge Was Explored Through Field Trips in Different Classes For Newcastle students, English, Science and Math is a must. Starting this next year students will have to have 20 credits toward graduation. Two classes will have to be taken of both Science and Math. New courses were offered this year to widen one’s Math knowledge- ment. English is taken by every student every year. Many things are covered in English class, things we all need to know. TOP RIGHT: Seniors enjoy a good hour of English. TOP LEFT: Juniors are really taking a tough test. RIGHT CENTER: Mrs. Taylor shows some students different types of wood. Newcastle had thirteen Seniors which proved that thirteen is not an unlucky number. Each Senior played a part in putting Newcastle in the Top 10 for one week and finished the season in the Top 20. Helping out the Seniors were 12 Juniors and 18 Sophomores. The younger players saw a lot of action in the varsity games. There were 5 Junior Varsity games. It was the Seniors last chance to play for Newcastle High. We had lineman playing as backs and backs playing as lineman, but they proved nothing is impossible if everyone works together. Newcastle football team will miss the Seniors of 1977. Their presence at practice and in games helped bring about the first winning season for Newcastle High School and Bi-District. Coach Claborn says as football coach he is proud to have been associated with thirteen of the finest young men in America. First Row: R. Young, T. Burris, J. Wilson, B. Thomas, G. Mooney, C. Bryan Thomas—Senior Cris Mason—Senior Seniors: Billy Wilson, Greg Ferguson, Mike McEwin. Dowd James—Senior Mike Tennell—Senior Assistant Coach: Bob Sperry Head Coach: Greg Pierson After two very successful seasons, 46 wins and 20 losses, Coach Greg Pierson faces a new challenge with the 1977 edition of the Racer High School Baseball Team. The 1977 season brings together a blend of experienced personnel and untried talent. In the two preceding seasons the Racers have finished first in four tournaments, including a District Championship in 1976, second in one tournament, and third in another. Gone from this year’s squad are such standouts as Kevin Hixson, now the starting third baseman for the Oklahoma Christian College Eagles, shortstop Tommy Young, and pitcher Clarence Shoumaker. The Racers have been rated among the top ten teams in Class 2A the past two seasons. The task of staying at that level has fallen into the capable hands of such people as senior hurler Dowd James, who has twice been selected to the Oklahoma City Times Little-All City Team, senior centerfielder Mike Tennell, who led the club in hitting with .412 average and homeruns with 8 his sophomore year. All-Conference leftfielder Bryan Thomas who led the club in stolen bases and the steady sure-handed second baseman Cris Mason round out the returning seniors. Other seniors that will play a major role in determining the success of the season are Greg Ferguson, shortstop, Billy Wilson, pitcher first baseman, and Mike McEwin, first baseman. Junior Mike Baldwin will be taking over the reins at the third base when not pitching. Mark Shaw returns to his position in rightfield. With Shaw, Tennell, and Thomas in the outfield, the Racers are blessed with one of the finest outfield trios in high school baseball. Junior Eddy Little- john will share the third base duties with Mike Baldwin. The catching chores will fall in the hands of sophomore Darren James. The Racers will also benefit from such capable players as sophomore Randy Young, who can play almost any position, pitcher Jeff McClain, infielders Larry Littlejohn and Larry Beckett. Taking the ACT test, getting measured for caps and gowns and order- ing announcements made the end seem nearer. Achieve- ment in sports and activities was overwhelming. Lack of concentration was evident during study hours. Some seniors made plans to attend college while others chose a vocation. The faces of the graduates showed confused emotions. Goodbyes to old friends were displayed by tears. Nervous smiles showed the anticipation of a new life beyond the walls of New- castle High School. The year 1977 will rapidly become almost indistin guishable from all that have gone before and will follow but what time erases, this book will preserve as a memon of our days in the Newcastle Schools. What began in the latter part of the month of Augus became a full cycle with the line of commencement. In the classroom as well as on the court, students me victory and defeat. As a group, we huddled together to fac the new opportunities of tomorrow. As individuals, we kep our goals set high and plodded on to the future. For som this was a first year of initiation; for others a last year o preparation. 1976-77 was a game . . . friends . . . teachers ... th past . . . hope . . . fear ... a memory .. . pointing oi toward the future. It is not today that we will appreciate the Racer Tomorrow, when it is not so easy to think back on 1977 we will treasure the memories this book has stored for u We have tried our best to present the best annual Newcastl has ever had, but only time will teli how well we have don this.
