The English department offers four years for the student whether he plans to go to college or not. These courses give the students a solid foundation of literature and composition. What do you mean you couldn't find the brake, could have been the words spoken by Mr. Burnett, the drivers Ed. teacher, as his student driver did not stop for a stop sign. We might go faster if you'd release the emergency brake! Watch out for the curb! was sometimes said a second too late as a student driver ran over the curb and into someone's lawn. Spanish class proved to be a very popular class this year. Because of the near proximity of the United States to Mexico and other Spanish- speaking countries, these students have great opportunities to use the skills they have learned. 16 NHS Students Involve Themselves and Gain Experience

All students graduating from Newcastle High School are required to take a designated amount of HISTORY, MATH, and SCIENCE. To meet the growth of the student body NHS has expanded and improved it's classes in these three departments. Newcastle students recieved a much needed back- ground in Junior High history. Later these students were required to take Oklahoma and American History. They learned the history of our state and country through class work that was usually enjoyed by everyone. World History is not required but a considerable number of students took it to learn more about the history of our earth. Students at NHS are required to take less Math than History, but the high school curriculum offered a large variety of Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. The mathematics department will con- tinue to grow at NHS to expand the students' opportunities. The Science department at NHS has seemingly become more attractive every year. The General Science and Biology classes were filled. General Science is a required class to freshmen at Newcastle, and several students decided to dig deeper into life science through a difficult Biology class. Bobby Williams (TOP) studies a map in history class. Chris Mason (MIDDLE LEFT) enjoys a good math class. Cindy Turner (MIDDLE RIGHT) learns about creatures that inhabit our world. Neil Shores and Rick McClain (LEFT) develop basic skills of dissection. 17
