This year started out with many varied experiences . . . everyone getting used to being a grade higher . . . making new friends and renewing old friendships ... for most there was the excitement of sports whether your sport be football, basketball, track, weight lifting, or volley- ball . . . 4 ... for Juniors there was Western Day, the Junior play and rings . . . for Seniors there was Senior pictures and being the oldest . . . for some a new experience was doing a book report for the first time . . . others learned all about the excitement of initiations. By the end of the year everyone had their fair share of . . . EXPERIENCES. : 5 Homecoming HOMECOMING. The very saying of the word brings to mind Queen Coronation, float contests, and a spirited football game. The week before Homecom- ing was full of spirit. The pep club sold spirit buttons and Homecoming Mums. The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes along with some of the organizations were busy all week working on floats. This year was the first year ever to have a float parade. The theme for Homecoming was the 1920's. Seniors came through with the first prize. Juniors came in second and FHA came in third. Halftime came with the moment everyone had been waiting for- Queen Coronation. This year's candidates were Senior Janiece Wallis escorted by Danny Abbott, Junior Debbie Thomas escorted by Vincent McGuire, and Sophomore Becky Paxton escorted by Tommy Young. The crowning of the 1975 Homecoming Queen, Janiece Wallis, was done by the 1974 Queen Candy Davis and Senior Ricky White. Deedee Mobley carried the flowers for the new queen and Craig Cox carried the football helmet. Besides the rain and mud the only discouraging moment of the night was the score. The Racers lost 42-6 to the Blanchard Lions. Blanchard went on to become second in our conference. TOP: Janiece Wallis, Homecoming Queen. The junior class hard at work while the basketball girls get ready for the season . . . the football team always ready to pose for the cameraman . . . the FFA ready to do any work that needs to be done, and the yearbook staff always around . . . the track team winning medals while the FHA girls gajn experience and the cheerleaders give a good yell for the RACERS . . . EXPERI- ENCES of many of the students this year were . . . foosball, disecting, pep assemblies, twenty's days, math, and a lazy day on the O.U. cam- pus. 10 n Typing II is a challenge for Nancy. Bruce enjoys accounting. Virginia acts like shorthand is hard. BUSINESS EDUCATION is one of the most emphasized areas in the Newcastle High School curriculum. Many improvements have been made in the Business department, which has expanded to include an Accounting class as well as first and second year Typing and the recently established Shorthand and General Business classes. Students in these classes take an initial step into the business world and begin building a foundation that may be useful in future years. Typing I is a class in which students learn the basic skills in using a typewriter. This class is useful especially to those who plan to attend college. Most students do not go further than Typing I, but a few dedicated business students work on perfecting their typing skills in Typing II. General Business is a popular class that teaches the basic laws of business. Students enrolled in either of the two General Business classes learn how to manage their own business affairs. A few students who may plan to pursue secretarial work enroll in Shorthand. Before a student completes this course, he is well-trained in taking dictations. In it's first year at Newcastle High School, Accounting has already become a fairly popular class. Students learn to manage large-scale business affairs in this class. Students that wish to receive further vocational training than what is offered here at NHS ride a bus to Mid- America Vo-Tech School. These students receive more advanced education into the vocational field of their choice. Linda and Donna study General Dale does his best in Typing I. Students board the Vo-Tech bus. Business. 12 Experience Needed After Graduation Was Received in the Classroom and in the Shop. Vocations include many films. Frank shows talent in WWin. Tony Glenn make use of the table saw. Ricky Frankie face problems in WWII Knowledge that is helpful long after leaving New- castle High School was attained by a large number of students in agriculture, woodwork, and vocations class. Students in these classes learn by watching, working, and listening, Mrs. Brush taught a vocations class that proved to be beneficial to almost every student that took the class and Mr. Holman shared the knowledge that he has accumulated with his agriculture students in order to develop skills that could possibly support our nation in future years. Under the direction of Mr. Mobley, our woodwork department has rapidly expanded and high school boys have an even greater opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals of an interesting craft. 13 Brian, Jimmie, Mark, and Lonnie, Newcomers in AG. FHA gives members the opportunity to im- prove their personal, family, and community living and gives them a look at home economics jobs and careers. FHA members join with others to meet concerns of today. The big project for the year was working with disad- vantaged children. 15 The English department offers four years for the student whether he plans to go to college or not. These courses give the students a solid foundation of literature and composition. What do you mean you couldn't find the brake, could have been the words spoken by Mr. Burnett, the drivers Ed. teacher, as his student driver did not stop for a stop sign. We might go faster if you'd release the emergency brake! Watch out for the curb! was sometimes said a second too late as a student driver ran over the curb and into someone's lawn. Spanish class proved to be a very popular class this year. Because of the near proximity of the United States to Mexico and other Spanish- speaking countries, these students have great opportunities to use the skills they have learned. 16 NHS Students Involve Themselves and Gain Experience All students graduating from Newcastle High School are required to take a designated amount of HISTORY, MATH, and SCIENCE. To meet the growth of the student body NHS has expanded and improved it's classes in these three departments. Newcastle students recieved a much needed back- ground in Junior High history. Later these students were required to take Oklahoma and American History. They learned the history of our state and country through class work that was usually enjoyed by everyone. World History is not required but a considerable number of students took it to learn more about the history of our earth. Students at NHS are required to take less Math than History, but the high school curriculum offered a large variety of Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. The mathematics department will con- tinue to grow at NHS to expand the students' opportunities. The Science department at NHS has seemingly become more attractive every year. The General Science and Biology classes were filled. General Science is a required class to freshmen at Newcastle, and several students decided to dig deeper into life science through a difficult Biology class. Bobby Williams (TOP) studies a map in history class. Chris Mason (MIDDLE LEFT) enjoys a good math class. Cindy Turner (MIDDLE RIGHT) learns about creatures that inhabit our world. Neil Shores and Rick McClain (LEFT) develop basic skills of dissection. 17 On My Hitchin' Day-Parson: Does you take this hyar female to be yore lawful wedded wife? The Newcastle Junior High Racers had a very good season as they brought home for the second year straight the Conference Championship trophy. Even though their over all record wasn't clean when conference play came around they were hard to beat. Finishing up with an over all record of 4-2-1. The 7th and 8th grade team were also very tough, despite the lack of experience they had. But with the fight they gave on the field the Junior High will be tough again next year. 23 High School Girls Basketball Sitting- L. Crawford, V. Trumbly, L. Crawford, L. Babb, S. Brown, A. They held meetings for planning activities and making signs to enhance school spirit. United We Stand and Divided We Fall was the club motto. To raise money for the many activities, the Pep Club sold spirit ribbons. The Pep Club stimulated spirit in the pep rallies that were held prior to each home game. They proved to be a hard-working crew throughout the school year and accomplished goals which they established the first week of school. The Football Homecoming was the highlight of the Pep Club's year with each member playing an active role in the queen corona- tion. A few members were also involved in selling mums. The Pep Club can look back on the year with pride. Mrs. Cox was Pep Club Sponsor. Tisha Carter Becky Paxton Sandra Long 37 Behind every successful ball team is a great pep club. The JUNIOR HIGH PEP CLUB cheered the NJH Racers to a conference championship this year. With a total of sixty-five members, the girls created a loud voice to urge their team on. Students have a chance to develop their talents through an excellent music program both in high school and junior high. The JUNIOR HIGH MUSIC class was somewhat smaller this year, but the quality didn't change. Under the able leadership of Mr. Pruett they worked hard and did a fine job in their public performances. Freshmen are taught by Mrs. Cornett, who teaches ninth through twelfth grade music. ABOVE: Members of the Freshman Quartet. Tim Underwood, Carol Doke, Mark Shaw, and Gina Steffes. The class worked hard throughout the year to improve the quality of an already impressive sound. Under the leadership of Mrs. Cornett the large Chorus put together two major public concerts. These were the Christmas and Spring Concerts. They were labeled as being very successful and were praised by a very gracious audience. The entire class was involved in these 40 Better Than Ever concerts; however, only the Honors Chorus participated in the state-sponsored spring contests. The Honors Chorus worked hard in preparation for contests with hopes of winning the trophy for a superior concert in state contest for the fourth straight year. In order to use the large amount of talent in our music department, Mrs. Cornett chose several special groups and ensembles. These included the Freshman Girls Ensemble, High School Girls En- semble, the High School Boys Ensemble, the Freshman Mixed Chorus, High School Girls Trio, and the foremost of all special groups, the Madrigal Singers. Several distinguished students sang solos in one or more of the major concerts. These were Raylene Adams, Pam Askins, Amy McNeilly, Carol Doke, Terie Williams, Paula Osborn, Brinda McEwin, Bunnie Travis, Bryon Coats, Bryan Doke, Barry Askins, Jay Jones, Danny Ogle, Mark Shaw, Tim Underwood, and Thom Wood. Not only was there the ex- citement of getting an instrument and trying to get a sound to come out of the instrument, there was the excitement of walking to and from the Fair Barn every day for band. Through the dangers of crossing the highway and the rougness of the rain, hail, sleet, and snow of the winter, the band students seemed to make it every day to class without any mishaps. At the first of the year, the students from all three bands were busy on a sales project. For weeks the cry around school was, Anybody want to buy some pop- corn? The money was being raised to buy new instru- ments. Mr. Pruett, our new band director, took the differ- ent bands to several concerts around the state over the year. Mr. Pruett had his work cut out for him over the year, coming into a new school with many new faces to learn besides teaching nearly all the students how to even begin to play an instrument. 42 7th and 8th Grade FIRST: D. Kim and Thom work hard to represent NHS. Newcastle High School has always been well represented at the East Central Interscholastic Meet by hard-working students who have proven them- selves in the classroom and this year was no excep- tion. Every year a large number of medals are brought home and this speaks well for the teachers and the students. Preparation for the contest consists of hours of devoted studying, so only the most dedicated stu- dents are chosen to compete. The meet is usually enjoyed by the participants, even though it requires hours of extra bookwork. Representing NHS at the interscholastic meet is an honor, regardless of the outcome of it and NHS can be proud of the fine way that it is represented. Some representatives this year were Thom Wood, Becky Fletcher, Benee Slater, Frankie Hill, Raylene Adams, Suzie Steger, Karen Redout, Teresa Smith, Kim Underwood, Jay Jones, Resa Rawson, Kathy Eades, Paula Anderson, Cindy Turner, Tim Under- wood, Ken Stewart, Lisa Watchous, Kari Barbour, Jimmy Fletcher, Pam Eddy, Paula Wietelman, and Tina Hernandez. Freshmen are ineligible to be members in the Oklahoma Honor Society because the per cent is figured from the two preceeding semesters of high school grades. After years of longing for this year to come, the Seniors found themselves looking forward to graduation with a more reluctant outlook. An entirely different way of life awaited many of the Seniors at the end of this year, but through the sorrow of leaving long-time friends came a voice of hope that led the Seniors onward in an effort to make this a better world to live in. Final pre- parations for stepping into a new world were begun in September and the busy way of life of a high school sen- ior was adopted by seventy-two people. Not long after school started this year, the Seniors ordered graduation announcements. Almost everyone was satisfied with his senior pictures which were taken late in September. In their final election of class officers, the Seniors elected Benny Burnett as president, Janice Wallis as vice-presi- dent, Marshah O'Donley as secretary-treasurer, and Amy McNeilly as reporter. Homecoming was a big time of the year for the Seniors. They won the Homecoming Spirit Stick and received the first place award for having the best homecoming float. All four of the NHS Queens for the 74-75 school year were Seniors, Raylene Adams was elected Music Queen, Janiece Wallis was elected Homecoming Queen, Lisa Babb was elected Yearbook Queen, and Lynda Crawford was elected All-Sports Queen. The Senior Play entitled Hobgoblin House , was performed in April to raise money for the Senior Trip at the end of the year. Over-all, the final year for the Class of '75 was a great one; one that will be remem- bered for many years to come. This is the eternal question that faced the 1974- 75 Juniors as they prepared for the Jr.- Sr. Banquet. With this in mind, many fundraising activities were launched in- cluding a highly successful Western Day, a Junior Play and a guest concert from Ardmore. Even though time was money the Juniors set aside a week to build a beautiful homecoming float that received the trophy tor second place. In spite of all the really important matters like raising money and receiving class rings, the Juniors still found time for such trivial details as English, history, accounting, home economics, etc., and had the pleasure of seeing many classmates chosen for positions of leadership in sports and music. All in all, the year was filled with work and excitement as the Juniors finally completed a fun-filled year and created memories to last a life time. Their class trip in Novemberwas taken to Lake Thungerbird and was highlighted with a bonfire and weiner-marshmellow roast. Their year of being boss in Junior High was celebrated by a second class trip in May. They now look forward to a new experience—that of being Super Sophomores! Courses taken in the seventh grade include, math, English, social studies, science, band, physical education, and choral music. Many of the boys played football, basketball, and baseball and many of the girls played basketball, volley- ball, and track; while others supported their teams as members of the pep club. The focus of one spring activity was the annual Science Fair. Participation in this event called for a lot of research before building the project. The year's activity in the way of a spring trip made for an enjoyable climax. 84 Christmas Time at Newcastle On December 13, 1974, the KINDERGARTEN through FOURTH GRADE presented their annual Christ- mas Program. Each class presented a variety of religious and secular music which was sometimes accompanied with instruments and choreography. Mrs. Sherry Childress and Mrs. Martha Brickell played the piano for this special event and Mrs. Glenn was the very able director of the four choirs. Lori Young, Becky Little, Randy Rhodes, and Shelly McKay (PICTURED ABOVE) performed solo acts in the program. 86 Elementary School December 12, 1974 was an exciting day for the FIFTH and SIXTH GRADERS as they presented their special program entitled Sing Christmas. It was the traditional story about Jesus' birth. Al- most forty young people played the parts of Mary, Joseph, the innkeepers, shep- herds, kings, and travelers. These stu- dents did a wonderful job as they conveyed this heart-warming story. Nine youngsters worked backstage and did a great job in helping produce the play. Aside from the actors and stage crew, a chorus provided ,music to add the finishing touch to a fine performance. Mrs. Glenn directed the program, and Mrs. Juanita Griffith, Mrs. Billie Coats, and Mrs. Dorothy Fletcher did their usually wonderful job in creating and erecting the scenery. As did the younger children's program, Sing Christ- mas helped to make a brighter holiday season for everyone. Joel Thomason (UPPER LEFT) was the narrator for the program. Andrea McNeilly (UPPER RIGHT), played the part of Mary. The Nativity Scene (LOWER LEFT). Sing Christmas (LOWER RIGHT). 87 Sixth Grade This is the first year for the sixth grade to have four different classes. They are individualized in spelling and have a new math series. SITTING: AI Underwood (Superintendent), James Griffith. The School Board had a very successful year this year. One of their major achievements of this year and this school district was the opening of the new grade school. It held the Kindergarten through third grades in twelve class- rooms. Another achievement of the year came in the form of an added department in fifth through twelfth grade curriculum —that of beginning band. Several other achievements were the additions of another Special Education teacher and Home Ec. teacher, a new heating system, the replacement of two old buses, and one new bus was bought. The School Board is very important and has done an out- standing job this year for Newcastle Schools. Mr. Al Underwood (RIGHT) is the Superintendent of schools. He is a well known figure in the halls and at all school functions. 106 I Joe Cox High School Principal A Good Principal Understands His Students The principal is an integral part of every school. It is the principal to whom a teacher turns in time of discipline. But a prin- cipal's job is not all disciplining. He is responsible for seeing that the school is kept running smoothly. He must handle any problems that come up no matter how large or small they may seem. Not only must he handlt these problems, they must be handle quickly and efficiently.
