Smiling faces mean friendship, whether at the start of a day or the close of a year. A smile may be preparing to get your picture taken, or enjoying lunch at the love seats, even having to sing during initiation week, or being caught by surprise, or looking to the ceiling for the answer. At the close of the senior year a smile means the start of a completely new life. Throughout this book, we, the Staff, hope that Smiling Faces will help you to recall the happy times and many friends of the 1971-72 school year. 3 Active Leaders It’s the Real Thing Attention, Attention Hurray! 3:25 School Board Smiles on the Development of Our School The best place to find James Griffith on a Saturday morning is in his kitchen enjoying a second cup of coffee. Newcastle community can be proud of the representation of Newcastle students in activities. Our main objective is to help create an atmosphere that will permit to think for them- selves. A democracy must depend upon the ability of its citizens to make intelligent decisions. The growth of Newcastle Schools is a challenge to all people concerned. I extend my appreciation and con- gratulations to the Board of Education for insight in planning for the future. We wish to compliment the people of Newcastle for being progressive in supporting their school. Cooperation in the days ahead will help make a suc- cessful school. CLASSES A Closer Step to Future Real Spirit Mission Almost Impossible Class R ings A Time to Remember “SENIORS” OF 1972 The Seniors take pride in their class sponsors, Mrs. Cornett and Mr. Young. Mrs. Cornett has co- sponsored the class for the past two years, and Mr. Young has been a co-sponsor since the class's freshman year. Being a member of the Senior Class always brings a feeling of honor and prestige. This year's class has many accomplishments of which they are proud, and one of them is the fact that they are the largest graduating class in the history of Newcastle School. The Seniors are proud also of their academic achievements. Three Seniors, Patsy Downs, Carol Elkins, and Debbie Fulton, made the first-semester honor roll with a straight-A average. Fifteen other class members had a B average or above. Valedictorian is Carol Elkins, and Salutatorian is Kathy Wyant. Steven Slater was given honorable mention on the National Merit Scholarship test. The Seniors are proud of their leadership contribu- tion to our school. Rickey Crawford is FFA President, Connie Simmons is FHA President, Sandy McClain is Yearbook Editor, Larry Mason and James Clay are football co-captains. DaShenna Keller and Connie Simmons are co-editors of the school paper; James Clay is president of the Lettermen's Club. During their high school years, the Seniors have been involved in many class activities both for fun and profit. During the past two years they have had a number of projects designed primarily to raise funds. They also have had a group party each semester, the biggest and best of which was the Senior Class trip to a state park on May 5. The last activities at which the Seniors appeared as a class were Baccalaureate on May 7 and graduation on May 11. But the Racers were not to be denied their first victory in 43 years when they defeated the Minco Bulldogs 8-6 in the second game of the season. They then reeled off two straight victories by blanking Stratford 14-0 and Blanchard 21- 0. The Racers tangled next with Putnam City B and were beaten 14-6 by one of the best teams en- countered during the season. Newcastle then played the Tuttle Tigers and were beaten 42-0, but they rallied the following week to stun Bethany 21-6. The Racers next clashed with the Mustang Bronchos and were defeated 18-0 and were also defeated 22- 8 by Noble. In the last game of the season New- castle ran past Western Heights 20-6 in one of the best-played games of the season. This was the first year for Newcastle to partici- pate in football since 1928, and it was a successful year with a 5-5 season record. The Newcastle Racers, after getting off to a slow tart due to first-year participation in football, fin- ished the 1971-72 season with a 5-14 record. The Racers relied heavily on fierce desire and hustle throughout the season, as they were usually much shorter in size than most of their opponents. Although the won-lost record of the Racers was not the best in the Canadian Valley Conference, it is certainly not indicative of the ability of the boys as they played all buc live ballgames close enough to win. The high point of the Racer season was the Washington game in which the Racers found them- selves starting the final quarter 14 points behind and pulled together to come out on top 71-70 in double overtime. The Racers placed two squad members on tne Canadian Valley All-Conference team. They were senior forward Tommy Baker and junior guard Eddy Canary. Honorable mention went to senior guard Rodney Shaw. The team competed and worked hard all season to learn new skills and techniques and to gain experi- ence which will help them in the future. Everyone did a good job this year with a few of the boys showing excellent results in all aspects of the game. The junior high manager, Larry Simpson, also did a noteworthy job. The team has enjoyed this past season and is look- ing forward to the challenge of next year Starting for this year's team were Steve Wilson and Dwight Wariner at guard, Davie Owens and Randy Moore at forward, and Scott Stone at center. Also seeing quite a bit of action were James Kilby, Bill Sprague, and Mike Perry. An important part of basket- ball is practice. EDITOR’S NOTE The 1971-1972 yearbook had finally been com- pleted. It hasn't been all fun and games. There have been many hours of hard work spent in order to bring back golden memories of the school year 1971-1972. I would like to give special thanks to our sponsor, Mrs. Linda Young, staff members, and to all people who have supported us along the way. With the sup- port we have had, we were able to add eight extra pages for extra pictures and broader coverage of every aspect of school life. I have had playmates, I have nad com- panions, In my days of childhood, in my joyful school-days— All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. Charles Lamb Old Familiar Faces We look back now at the many difficult decisions and long hours of work and, in our opinion, every minute was worthwhile. We hope that in the future the faces pictured on the pages of this annual will serve as a reminder of the many happy times of the 1971-1972 school year. Through twelve years of instruction and guidance, we seniors are now trained, designed, and organized for the opportunity which lies before us. As Editor I wish all SENIORS happiness and success.
