We deeply apprec- iate and thank Mrs. Young for her help and understanding. Mrs. Young and the annual class. J! “HAPPINESS Happiness has different meanings to each individual. For a child in grade school who has had very little experience with life, it may be only a simple recess. As he grows older, his ideals change; happiness may be the big game, raising money for a banquet, or ordering his class ring. When he nears the end of his Senior year, he finds a totally new meaning. It is not just the thought of finally finishing school, but the thought of all the memories to be forever cherished. This year has been a year for many of us to remember. We, the Annual Staff, hope that RACER 1971 will always keep fresh in your memory the many activities you have enjoyed. 3 BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. James Griffith (President), Mr. Gene Smith (Clerk), Mr. Eugene Garrett (Vice President), Mr. Everett Little (Member), Mr. Carl Fancher (Member). “SCHOOL BOARD HAPPY WITH STUDENT A ND PLANT INCREASE” Mr. Eugene Garrett, local dairy- man and housing developer, is serving his fifth year on the Board. Here he is relaxing in the teachers' lounge. 6 Mr. Cox, Mrs. Curtis, and Mr. Tan- nery stand in front of the office be- fore school. It's Christmas time, and Mr. Cox seems to have the Christmas Spirit. Mr. Young thinks Where are those fruit cakes? Craig Shaw, Lonnie Robertson, and Marcie Mays were nominated as Out- standing Teenagers of America. Four seniors were voted favorites of the high school student body; they were Dianne Carr, Lonnie Robertson, Sharlotte Stan- ford, and Craig Shaw. Dianne was also elected as FFA Sweetheart, and Lonnie was elected as FHA Beau. Five seniors have won medals at the interscholastic meet in Ada. Ten of the seniors have attended Newcastle School all 12 years. The class has given two plays, one in their junior year entitled Room No. 13, and one in their senior year entitled Auntie's Money. Baccalaureate was scheduled for May 16 with Commencement on May 18. The class trip was May 14. “HAPPINESS IS .. BEING A SENIOR’’ PEANUTS drawings by student artist with apologies to Charles M. The high point of the season came when the Racers handed Wayne their only conference loss of the year, 58-52, at Wayne. This victory marked the first time that Newcastle had beaten the much taller Bulldogs in three years. The Racers placed two seniors on the All-Con- ference team, Lonnie Robertson and Craig Shaw. In the county play-offs played at Newcastle on September 10, the Racers pounded out 15 hits on the way to a 13 to 2 rout of Dibble. The game was spiced by the steady pitching of Tommy Baker, who also added two homeruns to aid his own cause. New- castle played host to Amer-Pocassett on September 16 to determine the District Championship. Fall baseball for 1970 ended for the Newcastle Racers on September 25 when they met Granite in the Regionals and were defeated 10-2. The tourna- ment, hosted by Binger, included four teams: New- castle, Binger, Sentinel, and Granite, all winners of their respective districts. In the opening round of the tourney, Binger defeated Sentinel, and Granite knocked off the Racers. The following day Granite won the two-day tournament from Binger 1-0 and therefore won a berth in the state tournament where they made it to the finals only to be shut out by Asher 6-0. At the end of the season the win-loss record was 3-3 with one tie. Next year we are hoping to start a high school B team, in which we will have a 10-game schedule. Coach Terry Homan, who was head football and track coach at Hinton before coming to Newcastle, has done very much toward helping our boys start an important and successful team. His assistant coach, Mr. Dick Tannery, has also been a great help to the team. The team is looking forward to 1971-72 when Mr. Homan will become the high school coach and will try to lead the boys to an even better season.
