He spends hours every day before and after school giving of himself in order to make his teams the finest possi- ble. His name is Chris Sawyer. When Coach Sawyer took over as coach of the New- bury Park swimming team seven years ago, he led a rookie team to a 4th place finish. Since then he has finished no lower than frst in Marmonte League Swim- ming. If winning ever came easy to anyone it seems to for Coach Sawyer with his remarkable record. He has won 49 consecutive league meets and this season they went on to win C.l.F. overwhelmingly. Due to his nation-wide acclaim he was chosen to coach the United States International High School Team in France. ln that meet, he led the U.S. to a world cham- pionship. ln 7 years as Swimming coach, Chris Sawyer has been fortunate in that he has never been without talent. He has produced 14 all-Americans, one of whom was Mike Hayes who set two world records at the World Meet in France. l Coach Sawyer has also been coaching Water Polo for 6 years. Although he says his Water Polo career isn't as impressive as hissswimming, they still have done very well. They finished 'lst three years and have two unde- feated seasons to their credit. Coach Chris Sawyer has a very special talent in that he motivates people to win. He has done an excellent job in the past years and we wish him the best of luck in the years to come. Swimming 197

DI ERS HELP WIN CIF he Newbury Park diving team consist- ed of only three divers, Russell Martineau, Richard Mantor, Ron jackson all of whom had fine seasons. Russell Martineau led the Panthers this year by setting a CIF re- cord in the preliminaries. Russell might possibly be in the 1980 Olympic Games.
