A program was offered at New- bury Park High School to help the students and the mentally retarded at Camarillo State Hospital. The program was referred to as High School Without Walls . The pro- gram consisted of two 17-week series to coincide with the school semesters. Twenty students attend- ed from four schools, making a total of 80 students for each series. In re-- turn they would receive ten credits. The student volunteer would travel to the Hospital and help out with recreation, sports, personal grooming, academics, such as learning names, colors and num- bers. The students worked on a one-to- one basis with the residents under the supervision of Nancy Flowers who was the Supervisor of the Volunteer Services. Students make fire-fighters ' , f J l ' l . w i r . I ' s l Jim Kendricks and Vemon Siren, two students from the successful fire-fighters program, proudly relax by the bright yellow fire engine. One program offered at Newbury Park High School involved work experi- ence. The program presented various types of jobs for a hundred and fifty students. They could work and earn ten credits per semester at the same time. Weekly assignments were required, such as filling out applications, pre- employment test and resumes. The stu- dents also had guidance in selecting a future career after High School. Another Program offered was the Cadette program. This program in- volved twenty senior boys, ten from Newbury Park High School and ten from Thousand Oaks High School. The boys worked at five fire stations in the Conejo Valley. They spent a minimum of ten hours a week and earned five credits per semester. The purpose of i this program was to expose them to fire science and the career of being a fire- man. :'. ' Clubs 45a
