McKniff and M. lonesj i? i The 1974-75 Basketball Season opened up with a new coach, Ken Barone, a new offense t1-43, a new style tfast breakingl, and a new finish- the Semi-finals of the C.I.F. playoffs! With only three returning lettermen, Captain Mark Schroeder, Thaddeus Francis, and Lyle Dybwadpmany felt that the Panthers were in for a rebuilding year, though both Mark and Thad had been starters for the past two years. Coach Barone then inserted juniors Russ Zabel and leff Wellington into the starting line-up and the Panthers were off and running. Outstanding reserves were led by Ted Broadway, Kevin McKniff, Chuck Blat, and Ron Miner at the center and forward spots, along with Bob Svendsen, and Rick Oldenkamp at the back-up guard spots. After an opening Marmonte League win over Royal, the Panthers were stalked by both Camarillo and Oxnard. Coach Barone then brought up Kent Keyser, a freshman, and Steve Apperson, a junior, from the l.V. team to add dept to his squad. The Panthers went on to finish 3rd in the Mar- monte League with a 6-4 record including a big win over then number two C.I.F. ranked Camarillo. Invited to the playoffs, Newbury Park quickly showed the experts we deserved to be there by soundly defeating Mount Carmel tSanta Fe League Champs! 82-61. Next number two rated Los Amigos tGarden Grove Champsl was stalked and defeated by the Panthers 54-52. Onto the 3rd round and Lynwood tSan Gabriel Valley Champs! met defeat at the hands of the Panthers 69-65. The Panthers finally lost against the Mission Valley Champions and number three rated San Gabriel Matadors 58- 49 in the Semi-Final game. The team has much to be proud of, we finished higher than any other team in our short history. Coach Barone is looking towards next year for another winning season. The remaining members worked together to pull off a good season. A lot of people were surprised at how well we did after losing our two best players. This was the best j.V. team N.P. has ever seen! commented Coach Cummings. The leading scorer was Matt Broadway, 9.7. The leading rebounders were Matt Broadway and Dave Styka. The team came in 2nd place with an 18-6 overall season and 8-2 in league. l.V.
