,.., 5.1 , o A SHORT HISTORY OF NEWARK VALLEY SCHOOL When the f1rst pxoneers f1ltered across the borders of New England to settle rn the Boston Purchase wh1ch xncluded the land 1n the present county o f Txoga they lost llttle tlme 1n l1v1ng up to thelr Puritan ideals of educatxon Small schools began sprmgmg up wherever there were chxldren to attend them By 1796 Elisha Wllson the flrst settler w1th1n the llmxts of what was to become Newark Valley Township was conductlng classes ln a bark covered shanty on hrs property The shanty was followed m quxck successxon by a shoe shop and a barn both of whxch were soon d1scarded As the need for more and better fac111t1es grew llttle log school houses were bullt In 1812 the state dlvlded the towns of Newark Valley Berkshxre and Rxchford 1nto 12 school d1str1cts Thls d1v1s1on spl1t the town of Newark Valley 1n half and shortly thereafter our town had w1th1n xts l1m1ts not one but two state supported schools Numerous attempts were made to umte these two dxstrlcts slnce the people correctly belleved that the state a1d would be more benef1c1a1 11' lt were directed toward one lnstead of two objectxves Mr Royal W Clxnton a loyal and wealthy Cltlzen of our vxllage put an end to the controversy when he volunteered to erect and donate to the consolldated dxstrxct a new school burldmg Agreement came rapldly and rn 1887 Newark Valley became the proud possessor ofafme two story brxck buxldmg overlook1ng the vnllage green In only a few years even th1s great structure became the v1ct1m of an ever xncreasmg populatxon and once more the search for new school fac1l1t1es was on At thrs pomt the state stepped ln and suggested an ent1rely new ldea xf some of the dlstrxcts could be centralized xt would be possxble to construct a smgle buxldmg for everyone rn the area Centrallzatnonl Almost overnxght lt became the rnaxn toplc of conversatlon There were many heated arguments pro and con Would lt really be benef1cxal Do we want our chxldren to have to go so far to school? But the xncreased state a1d and the better eqtupment avaxlable because of the axd fmally convmced the people and 1n 1930 the move was approved by a 4 to 1 vote for centrahzatlon In less than a year we had our new school abeautxful edrhce whxch ever sxnce has beena source of przde and Joy to all of 1ts alumm whom It has served so well In less than a decade xt was dxscovered that the number of st xdents agaxn exceeded the space rn whxch to accomodate them The result was the leas1ng and eventual purchase of the pr1vate homes bordermg the school on the north and south to use for addxtxonal classrooms Thls solved the problem mn Newark Valley temporar1ly but the ele mentary schools xn the outlyxng dxstrxcts were also becomxng over populated and no such solutxon was possxble for them Agam the state mtervened and suggested the consohdatxon of the small schools mtoa sxngle buzldlng for all Committees were organxzed and prospectlve sxtes were chosen After a number of attempts the better Judgment of the people won out and an area on the mam hxghway between Newark Valley and Berk shxre was approved by publlc vote By thls trme however the hlgh school xn Newark Valley was feelmg the old famllxar symptoms of over crowdlng and the plans for an addltxon to the present buxldmg were approved at the same vote Constructxon on these two projects w1ll begin dur1ng the summer of 1954 So once agaxn the sounds of construction w1ll rmg out 1n the valley and whxle we know the changes w1ll result rn an even fxner buxldxng w o the Class of 54w1ll always remember you N V C S as we knew you perhaps not the most elaborate school but our own Alma Mater and as such beyond reproach 6
