But the xncreased state a1d and the better eqtupment avaxlable because of the axd fmally convmced the people and 1n 1930 the move was approved by a 4 to 1 vote for centrahzatlon In less than a year we had our new school abeautxful edrhce whxch ever sxnce has beena source of przde and Joy to all of 1ts alumm whom It has served so well In less than a decade xt was dxscovered that the number of st xdents agaxn exceeded the space rn whxch to accomodate them The result was the leas1ng and eventual purchase of the pr1vate homes bordermg the school on the north and south to use for addxtxonal classrooms Thls solved the problem mn Newark Valley temporar1ly but the ele mentary schools xn the outlyxng dxstrxcts were also becomxng over populated and no such solutxon was possxble for them Agam the state mtervened and suggested the consohdatxon of the small schools mtoa sxngle buzldlng for all Committees were organxzed and prospectlve sxtes were chosen After a number of attempts the better Judgment of the people won out and an area on the mam hxghway between Newark Valley and Berk shxre was approved by publlc vote By thls trme however the hlgh school xn Newark Valley was feelmg the old famllxar symptoms of over crowdlng and the plans for an addltxon to the present buxldmg were approved at the same vote Constructxon on these two projects w1ll begin dur1ng the summer of 1954 So once agaxn the sounds of construction w1ll rmg out 1n the valley and whxle we know the changes w1ll result rn an even fxner buxldxng w o the Class of 54w1ll always remember you N V C S as we knew you perhaps not the most elaborate school but our own Alma Mater and as such beyond reproach 6 Qahzwz Dwlwvl Here we have Genev1eve as tue student and Chazz as her bespectacled teacher complete wxth pomter They are 1n front of our you recognize as the present post off1ce G5 Nr 9 O 9 old schoo1, which we hope 5 cx Q Nl X X 7 X BOARD Or EDUCATION 'Ns Row 1 Mr Henderson, Mr Nickerson, Mr' Biggie, Mr Bushnell Miss Kinyonfclerkl Row 2 Mr Stimmingfpresidentl, Mr Harper, Mr Hall Mr' Ryther, Mr Hyatt, Mr L'Amor'eaux 1strat1on the faculty the cafeterla workers andthe bus drlvers and Jamtors we the Class of 54, shall be eternally thankful Whether lt was a gentle push m the rmght d1rect1on by a member of the admxmstratxon those extra hours long after school was dxsmlssed wh1ch were contributed to helpmg us xn an expeclally d1ff1cult asslgnment a s-1-U kmd heated cafeter1a staff member who agreed t trust us to pay for our lunch later a Janltor who walt ed far 1nto the mght to clean up a mess created by one of our projects or just the frxendly smlle and pat Eb on the back wh1ch we encountered everywhere xt matters not nf- The xmportant pomt xs that whenever our memory chances to fall upon these mstances and countless others coupled wlth them w1ll be our feelmg of ex treme gratxtude for all that the persons contamed on these pages have done to prepare us for lxfe P f6 , s Q ' ' 5 g , , J.. i si ' 1' . , I . . . . , To these persons. the board members, the admin- . , . , ' - ' o 19 lk ' B V . l . x.. The first duty at the beginning of school was to elect the fO110w1ng class officers: rnresident, Barbara Qrisrellf vice-president, John Albrecht, secretary, Betty Belokur. and treasurer, Doris Gray. Our class had several different activities to raise money. selling refreshments at foot- ball games, selling statione ry and piRSj sponsornig dances after Friday night home basketball games, sponsoring roller skating once a month in the gym. We also had the fun house, baseball throw, and movies at the annual carnival. This year, as Juniors, we had two new activities considered honors by all Juniors: the annual Junior play and the only formal dance of the year, the Junior Prom. We have acc omplished much this year by working together for the benefit of the class I 4 ow 1 Klossner, S Vilcox, J Quick L Atwood,V Johnson, N Lyon, W Hartvell D Jordon Row 2 S Howland, S Patterson, Mr Wren, S Hubba, B Harvey, J Lusk, D LaPoma, Miss Salwoeki, S Chaffee, J Cole ow I Austin, D Marshall, S Armitage, A Dingman, D Budney, F Thomas, R Ambrose S Eetep, R Austin, W Gormel, F Mott Row 1+ P Mulke, F Bailey, R Cartland, S Legge, D Brewer, E Morris K Card, J Lan J Holden, T Hammond Row 5 B Pickert, R Stuhlmiller, D whlttaker, A L'Amoreaux, C Stoughton, D Blehl, D Mock, R Wakeman, N Matson, R Smith The year began with election of class officers Creighton Lusk president Donald LaPoma vice president Betty Ha rve y secretary and Sandra H ubb s treasurer Our class advisors were Miss Salwoski and Mr. Wren. Our first project was selling Christ- mas ribbon. The profit was approximately 5170. From our carnival booths we re- ceived a good profit Since we still have two years to earn money for our senior trip we decided to do something for someone something which would give us satisfaction Asa result we hope to support achild in foreign orphanage through the Christian Chi1dren's fund.
