On this day the Student Council President assumes the responsibilities of the Principal, and the Vice-President, those of the Vice-Principal. Other students chosen by the Junior and Senior High teachers, with Student Council approval, take over the duties of the High School teachers. This is an event which everyone anticipates, for few if any other schools in this vicinity have such an annual event. Though much pleasure and enjoyment come to us from participating in this activity, it is felt that there are certain benefits gained from it: teaching experience, responsibility and poise. 6 5. u 0 a ffl, - 1 'Y' 0 9 . , , - 1. To the members of the Class of '53 Congratulations on your success as graduates of our Newark Valley Central School. May you go from here better equipped with the knowledge that you have at- tained. Your yearbook theme, We like our school, is a good one, for by it you show that you have enjoyed your years here and that you appreciated them as well. Appreciation is part of your growing up. Thirteen years, five days a week, forty weeks a year is a long time to spend in school. What an opportunity you had to appre- ciate, but did you? Let,s see: what did you do each day to make your teachers' job easier? How well did you prepare those assignments? Consider the time and thought given by those who serve. By giving serious con- sideration to these ideas, may you all go forth with that appreciation to serve and to build a life that will make this a better and safer world in which to live. Donlt be discouraged or disheartened by the hardships you may encounter during your life, as these may be stepping stones to a greater life of service. The easy road may lead to a life of ruin and misery rather than to a life of appreciation. May God richly bless each one of your lives. YV. H. STIMMING 8 lQLf!,.1,w.zfwaL W. L. President, Dorothy Yaple, Vice-President, Myrna Barret. Secretary: Virginia Snow. Treasurer: Dorothie Crispell, Student Council Representative for 1 year: Edwin Hilliard, Student Council for 2 years. It was about the middle of October before things really started rolling. It was then that our stationery campaign got under way. Two teams were organized, the girls vs. the boys. Who won? The girls were the lucky ones. Anyway. the important thing was the profit we made. Washington. here we come! Another important event of the month occurred when we found that the Juniors were to have exclusive control of the roller skating activities during the year. Things were going smoothly when the Seniors discovered that they had sufficient funds for their trip and turned over to us the job of first selling candy and pop at the games and second selling pies. All of these rewarded us with a big return each week. The next large project was that of the Junior play. It took a lot of time and work but we knew it would be a huge success. The one thing most Juniors looked forward to more than anything else was the selection of their class rings. Kfarch was awaited with much anxiety because that was the month in which the rings were purchased. Another big event of the year occurred in June when we sponsored the annual Junior Prom. This was an activity which was enjoyed by everyone who liked to dance. YN'ell. despite the fait that this year cost every Junior 35.00 iclass duesj it was a pretty profitable year. one which brings us just that much closer to good old XN'ashington. LSO Row 1: M. The posts were held by Barbara Crispcll, President, Betty Belokur, Vice-President, Bill Stoughton. Secretary, Doris Gray. Treasurer, Janet Smith, new Student Council Representative and Gerald Hover, who was elected Student Council Representative in 1951. Our First project was that of making paper megaphones and pom poms which were sold at the football games. As chairman of the committee, Sandra Prentice was instrumental in our achieving a small amount of profit with this project. When football season ended we decided to continue selling megaphones at the basketball games, a decision which did not turn out well since we failed to sell very many. At the advent of the Christmas holidays we decided to carry on the traditional project of making evergreen decorational pieces. The hard work and cooperation of the students made this project a success. A secondary project was holding dances after the Friday night basketball games, with records donated by class members providing the music. Under the direction of Betty Belokur and Shirley Adamek we held dances on january 16 and 23, and February 6 and 13. We appreciated being Sophopores, but anxiously anticipate the coming Washington trip. 31 f-Ma Me FRESHMAN CLASS The Freshmen started off the year in September with a bang, the scramble in the halls, the fight for lockers and meeting new people. Mr. Barrett and Miss Solwoski were our advisors. We all dreaded initiation day, although the kids really looked eute in their duds. There was the usual scramble to get away from the Seniors but all through the day the Freshmen lost the fight. Night was when the slaughter started, though they all said it wasn't too bad after all. The eleetion of ofheers resulted in this slate: Bradley Piekert, President, Jean Ambrose. Vice-Presidentg Doris Marshall, Treasurer, Alan YVagner, Seeretary: Curtis Taylor and Sandra Hubbs, Student Council Representatives. XVe all worked hard at our booths at the Student Council Car- nival after Easter. YN'e had the balloon shaving, Cotton transfer and snapshot Concessions and though our prohts weren't as large as we'd hoped, we all had fun. The Freshmen didn't fare too well in sports their first year in high school. But we are all proud of Joe Lusk for his magniheent job on our varsity football, basketball and baseball teams. 32 Row 1: W. Johnson, D. Jordan, D Budney, S. Wilcox, R. Cart- land, A. Dingman, J. All of our activities were supervised by Mr. Van Deusen, Mr. Schoonmaker and Mr. Gil- martin. Since this was also an election year for the President of the United States, Mr. Gilmartin's section made posters and displayed them at the football ganie, November 4, as a get out and vote cam- paign. To start our funds, we sponsored a roller skating party to which we invited girls and boys of grades six through nine. The two fifth grades Combined their work in Social Studies, English, Arithmetic, Art, and Music. In February we presented an assembly program to which we invited fourth and fifth grades and our parents. In Miss Rockwell's room we planted a cotton plant in September. We enjoyed watching it grow. YVe also made Indian masks and decorated our room to go with our work and holidays. IVe enjoyed having duties to keep our room neat. For an English project we wrote to pen pals in other parts of the world. INe made a barometer and tried to forecast the weather. In Mrs. Ardell's room we saw an interesting Christmas program, The Littlest Angel. The little Angcl's gift to the Lord Jesus was selected as the best. In art we made clay animals and baked and glazed them. Both fifth grades enjoyed the high school assemblies, especially the snake show and the deep-sea diver. lVe also enjoyed going to the library and reading different types of books. We feel that we did a lot of work and had a good time too. Row 1: K. Okrepkie, J. Ru- pert, L. Mathews, B. Bendick, D. Post, D. Geerken, L. VVicks, J. Daniels, N. Orch- ard. Row 2: D. Walters, A. At Hallo- ween time we made Jack O'Lanterns. We also had a party and Could see all the costumes. This was great fun. At Christmas we had a very pretty tree. This was liked by all of us because there were so many different things on the tree. We all liked to play on the playground. The slides, swings, merry-go-rounds, and teeters gave us mueh to do in our reeesses. The Valentine Party was so much fun because we had ice cream and many, many Valentines in our mail boxes. Some of the other things we liked to do were to draw pictures after we went on a trip, hiking to the woods for Christmas greens, playing with the puzzles, blocks, clay, and dolls. lVe also liked to sing songs and read stories. The number games were fun, too. A All in all our kindergarten year was fun and we are looking forward to going to the big school next year. The Club's activity throughout the year consisted mainly of much discussion concerning the set-up of the book. Several times Mr. Barrett had a few of the members down at his home where they stayed until the wee hours of the morning simply dis- cussing the plan for the book. The real action began one week in February, when the photographers came to take pictures for the Yearbook. It was formed to give students, who had been study- ing instrumental lessons for only a short time some experience in playing in ensemble, with emphasis on blend, balance, and tone. The Junior Band participated in the Annual Spring Concert held in May. Row 1: L. Koroluck, R. Rick, F. Thomas, C. Tyler, C. Dalola, L. Hines, S. Legge, G. Brooks, M. Prentice, J. Daniels, D. Geerken. The season was off to a breathtaking start when the Cardinals subdued a lighter, but nearly as aggressive Troy eleven in the opening game under the lights. Four more victories followed in rapid succession, two of them being on more even terms with the Valley emerging victorious by less substantial margins. Defeat was first tasted at the hands of Sherburne by a seore of 13 to 6. The visitors overcame a one touchdown lead to edge us out in the closing minutes of play. Beaten but not dis- couraged, the Cardinals eonfronted Owego, our arch rival, in a game that brought every spectator to his feet. Behind by two touchdowns in the second half, we fought back bravely but in vain, for the Indians sealped us, 12 to 7. In the season's finale, Valley easily won over Homer on a rainsoaked and muddy field. Speetator attendanee increased noticeably this year. We are sure that the development of winning teams has had much to do with the increased enthusiasm of the townspeople. We hope that this enthusiasm will not die when the team does not have a winning combination. Thus, football was the major sport at Newark Valley this year. Some of the credit for much-improved sehool spirit must be given to the varsity cheerleaders who gave their best for the game in the form of victory yells. Team play was emphasized. so no one can claim a position as star. XVe were very proud of our team this year and will be out rooting for an even better one next season. 57 O Kneeling: M. Wesler. D. VARS ITY BAS KETBALL Unfortunately. our basketball team was unable to eompile an impressive reeord this year. having won only 3 out of 19 games. However, most of the play- ers as well as the eoaeh will agree that mueh valuable experienee has been gained through partieipation in the sport. As the seorebook will show, there were a few teams that aetually had nothing to worry about when they faced N.V. The majority of Val1ev's losses were by less than 10 points. Of these, nine were lost by less than 6 points. The laek of experienee and height plaved a major role in our defeats. lklanv teams the Cardinals faeed averaged inehes taller per man. However. manv good things ean also be said for eaeh member of the team. Hin or lose. in every game. eaeh boy gave his best. ln nearly every game his hopes were dashed. but always before game time arrived again. his spirits were revived. and he was ready to give his all li the alma mater. flffi 'f 1 ' 7- ..i...7 ,.s-, U I ' D.
