HOFFER On May 18, 1957, Evan W. Hoffer, a member of the sophomore class, , met with a tragic death on the curving road north of the Waterworks bridge near Hornis Hill. The car in which he was riding turned end over end. ,gg Evan had attended a drive-in theater with his brother Terry and a friend, john Wiley, driver of the car. They had decided to go out the road to see a former residence of one of the boys where the accident occurred. Evan was thrown from the car as was Wiley. However, neither Wiley nor Terry Hoffer A were injured. Evan died of crushed lungs and a skull fracture. if -I i i iz, . Hoffer and resided at 12 Kreig Street. He was an excllent student. He attended Newark Township School and Roosevelt junior High School before coming to Newark High. CHARLES DAVID RILEY Around 7:30 in the morning of Saturday, june 29, 1957, Charles David Riley was fatally injured in an automobile accident on Route 18 north of St. Louisville at the south end of Coadis Curve. He died in Newark City Hospital at 10:30 while undergoing surgery to correct internal injuries received in the mishap. Riley and two companions were heading home from a fishing trip when they collided head-on with a north-bound tractor which was not pulling a trailer. According to the driver of the tractor, Riley, who was driving the car, came across the center line of the highway as he was approaching the curve. The auto left a skid mark on the highway for a distance of approximately 90 feet on the east side of the center line prior to the impact. Cary Williams and Ronald Francis, Rileyis companions, were hospital- ized for injuries and lacerations. Riley had been a member of the sophomore class during the school year 1956-57.

lable Miss FLORENCE EDNA BOYD retired from the Newark High School in June of 1957. She began her teaching in the Newark elementary schools in 1914 but came to the high school in September of 1986. While here she taught history. MR. FLORN WVASHBURN SMITH began teaching at the Newark Senior High School in September of 1918. Here he taught chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Mr. Smith retired in june of 1957. MR. 1'IARRY CHANIBERS ST. CLAIR began his teaching career in Muskingum County in 1905. He came to the Newark Senior High School in September of 1941. From the autumn of 1944 until the re- turn of Mr. Lester B. Cox during the school year of 1945-1946 Mr. St. Clair served as principal of Central junior High School. He re- turned to the high school and taught commercial subjects until his retirement in june of 1957. At present Mr. St. Clair is serving as school treasurer. He is in his office each morning during the school week. 12
