.Qefhes . . Mr. Roy Hammond, cus- todian of Newark High School, retired in October of 1955. He had been at Newark High since l946. Mr. Hammond was a MR- ROY HAMMOND man who did not let the pressures and obsessions of modern like bother him. He had the happy faculty of getting things done without driving himself to the point of exhaus- tion. He retained that ability to live easily that so many moderns have lost, much to their dis- comfort. And along with his duties he always had a smile or a hearty laugh for the individual who could spend a moment between pressing engagements. We shall all miss seeing Mr. Hammond walking across Main Street to McLean's for his morning or afternoon cup of coffee. And we wish him a long life of happiness and many cups of coffee.

g'2efi'zes . . . One of the most popular teachers in the language department in recent years was Sarah S. Krieg, teach' er of French, German, and Spanish. Mrs. Krieg came to Newark High School in autumn of 1933, having taught a year at Lincoln Junior High School. Known by her many students and friends as Mrs. Sarah Schif- feler, she taught until the spring of 1940 after which she left the teaching pro- fession to become Mrs. Lawrence Krieg. When World War II erupted and James Passman, who had taken over part of Mrs. Krieg's work at the high 1 school, left for military duty, Mrs. Krieg returned r to teach German and Span- ish. Here she remained un- til the spring of 1954. In MRS' SARAH KRIEG the fall of 1954 she ob- tained a leave because of indisposition and did not return to school. In her classes during her teaching tenure she emphasized culture as well as linguistic proficiency. During the summer of 1955 Mrs. Krieg retired from the teaching profession. Previous to teaching at NHS Mrs. Krieg followed music as a career. She received a degree of Bachelor of Music from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She taught violoncello and piano at Wooster College. Later she lived in Europe where she studied and did concert work in violoncello literature with which she was quite successful. At the same time Mr. Shiffeler was engaged in operatic work, both study and performance. Mrs. Krieg received her A.B. degree from Denison University and her M.A. degree from The Ohio State University. Mrs. Krieg was one of those types of people that others like to know. Her conversation was charged with fun and zest. Her friends were many and her students loyal. Those who took instruction from her entered college classes with confidence in the knowledge that they had been well prepared. To Sarah Krieg her old friends in the faculty of NHS wish her many years of happiness and a full and long life in her retirement. Her many students scattered about the globe express their sincere appreciation for what she did for them.
