FINAL ASSEMBLY OF 1954 At one oclock on June 4 1954 the fnnal assembly of the school year 1953 1954 was held Proceedungs started wth a pledge to the flag Mr Multon Shearer then read passages from the Eplstles of St Peter after which he led the assem blage rn the Lords Prayer From this lnsplratlonal launching the program arrlved at the perlod of presenta tnon of awards A new award glven by the Veterans of Forelgn Wars was pre sented by Commander Paul Gales to Geof frey Ertksen for outstandlng sportsmanship on the fleld It was a magnlfucent trophy Next a years subscription to Reader's Digest was given Bev erly Chase as a re ward for her hnghest scholarshup percent age In the class A book award for ex cellence ID American h s ory g 1 v e n y John Fleek was pre sented t Thomas Hughes Followvng these presentations Garry Wharton gave a check from the senror class to Mr Dlckerson for use by the debate squad at the natlonal debate tournament un Greenborough Penn M Boyd Wharton presented from the nuor c sx c oc s W h a rto n then thanked M Bo un behalf of the class for has great contrnbutuon to wards theur educatnon and added that Mr Boyd was a fune prnncnpal Mr Boyd next called Tom Gaunder to the stage and pre sented hum wnth a gnft nn recognltton of hu excellent work as stage manager Mr Duckerson followed wlth the Reese Debate award gnven by Everett Reese to an outstandnng sophomore debater H presented the award to John Anderson And then came the presentatuon of let ters Mr Harlow began the proceednngs wnth has customary lokes He Introduced Mr Allen who presented letters to thnrteen members of the 1954 baseball team Cap tam Phll Wnlkuns an turn presented to Mr Boyd and the school the dnstruct Class A baseball trophy Mr Douglas next handed out the golf letters Dan Evans un turn pre sented Mr Boyd the COL golf trophy M Boyd commented that he belueved thus was the fnrst golf trophy to come to Newark Hugh Mr Harlow next Introduced has 880 relay team and mule relay team each of whlch took fourth In the state meet and presented letters to the track team I turn Geoffrey Enksen presented Mr Boyd the COL fleld and track trophy and Rob ert Cam presented the New Concord trophy Mr Harlow then showed the stu dent body the cake he had purchased for the COL wunnung golf team and track team whnch was to be con sumed nn the home economlcs room by the golfers and track sters after the lssu uance of report cards 1We wonder whether nn some anstances ap petltes were as keenl Callmg Mnss Myer to the stage Mr Harlow lauded her and her cheerleaders Saundra Culp then stepped forward and present ed Mlss Myer a guft from the cheerlead ers Nancy smlth fol lowed with the pre sentatuon of letters to gurls athletnc assocl atnon wunners Bo d Douglas and Mr Harlow all pralsed th the sensor class for nts superior characteristics Mr Boyd remarked that nt was one of the ftnest In hrs memory H then called for the student body to express In applause nts apprecnatlon of teachers and advusers of clubs whuch never get any recognntuon The response could be com pared somewhat to a fure suddenly an nonnted wlth a soaked blanket The assembly drew to a close wrth the presentatnon by James Cushman outgolng presndent of the gavel of the Student Coun cal to James Barr Incoming prexy The alma mater was not entoned Students sllthered to home rooms to get those fate ful luttle cardboard folders , . . . , , .
