CHORUS CONCERT On the evening of May 4, 1954, the Newark High School chorus presented its fourteenth annual concert un- der the direction of Wendell M. Jones. The first group sung by the choir was Al- mighty God of Our Fathers, James, and Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light, Bach. The second group con- sisted of Let the Words of My Mouth, Hyde, Lead Kindly Light, Purday, and Great God ot Wonders, Newton. Next Ruth Bieber- bach played a piano selec- tion. Virginia Meriwether and Barbara Hartman each sang solos. Mrs. Dwight Gibson, the former Martha Shimel of the Class or 1942, sang three se- i lections. A trio ot girls at one piano rendered a popu- lar Beethoven number. They were Ruth Bieberbach, Jean Lees, and Mary Carter. The choir then sang Jacob's Ladder, Wilson, Arise, O God, and Show Thy Might, Morgan, and Jesus Our Lord We Adore Thee, James. The last selections sung by the chorus were Cindy, Wilson, Song of the Flea, Moussorgsky- Lorenz, The Skaters, Waldteutel- Riegger, and Benediction, Lutkin, and Amen, Stainer. The program was then concluded with the Crimson and the White. The mistress of ceremonies was Rose Ann Ours. A SUGAR MAPLE IS PLANTED ON SCHOOL LAWN MAY 12, 1954. MEN FROM ALBYNS SET IT IN PLACE.

SENIOR CLASS PLAY On Friday, May 14, 1954, the senior class presented its play The late Christopher Bean, by Sidney Howard. It was staged in the school auditorium at 8:15 in the evening, Miss Dorothy K. McCord, faculty director, chose as her student assistant, Carol I I Knerr. The cast was as follows: Larry Green, Doctor Haggett, James Wince, Warren Creamer, John McDonald, Tallant, Frank lmhoff, Davenport, Jerry Bishop, Rosen, Lois Riggs, Ada Haggett, Fran- ces Radwell, Susan l-laggett, Sal- ly Willey, Mrs. Haggett, and ROSS Ann OUVS, Abbey. left to right: Rose Ann Ours, Lois Riggs, Sally Willey, Larry Green BACCALAUREATE The annual baccalaureate service was held in the high school auditorium on May 30, 1954, at two-thirty in the afternoon. The graduating class was escorted to reserved seats in the center section by Nancy Dantord and Carol Hornby while the Newark High School Instrumental En- semble, under the direction otMyron Pearce, played Huldigunsmarsch, Grieg. The Reverend Howard E. Dyer ot the Christian Apostolic Church gave the invocation. Selected members of the high school chorus, under the direction ot Wendell M. Jones, then sang How Lovely Are the Messengers, Men- delssohn. Men Against the Stars was the subiect of the ad- dress presented by the Rev- erend Dr. Hoyt Kerr, of the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Kerr reminded the candidates for graduation that the only people who were truly inter- ested in them were in the au- ditorium at that moment. Fol- lowing the address, the choir sang Break Forth O Beaute- ous Heavenly Light, Bach. Mr. Dyer pronounced the benediction and the seniors filed from the room to the ac- companiment ot the Grieg march. Ushers were James Bair, Joseph Cunningham, David Bowden, John Jacobs, Paul Orr, Robert McGaughey, and Neal O'Brien. 17
