S me Zelcwe Resolved: That the President ot the United States should be elected by a direct vote of the people was the nation- al high school debate topic for the year 1953-1954. The debate squad, including the sopho- mores, opened the season on December 5 by attending the Central Ohio Debate Clinic at Ohio State University. On De- cember 12 the debaters won a gold tro- phy for second place at the Columbus North All-Events Tournament. In a practice tournament against Denison Uni- versity, on January 13, the varsity emerged victorious with a record of five wins and one loss. Two days later, how- ever, they met and bowed to Upper Ar- lington in another practice tournament. At the Dayton Fairmont tournament on January 30, Newark won first place in B division. The last regular season tournament was held at Delaware Willis on February 6. Newark placed second at this tournament. Four senior debaters, Frances Radwell, Shirley Orr, James Cushman, and John McDonald won sec- ond place in the district tournament of Peggie Lusk, Kirby Gull, Thomas Hughes John Anderson at Ohio State University on February 27. A high point ot the season came on March 12 and 13 when the Newark A team took second place at the N.F.L. district tournament. This second-place win qualified Newark for the state tournament, which was held on March the Ohio High School Speech League 19 and 20. Seated-Mrs. Barrick. radio The Radio Club, in cooperation with the Radio Committee ot the Student Council, produced and presented the weekly radio program it's High Time over WCLT. Programs were heard every Thursday at four o'clock in the afternoon. At the first meeting of the year seventy- five members reported. The group met every Wednesday at 3:15 to plan and rehearse radio shows. At this time, also, club members heard discussions con- cerning radio by members. On several occasions members of the staff ot radio station WCLT addressed the group. John McDonald was presidentg Patricia Deenis, secretary. James Cushman was student announcer. During the first se- mester Mrs. Eleanor Barrick and Miss Dorothy McCord were advisers. Mr. T. Edwyn Dickerson replaced Mrs. Barrick at the beginning of the second semester. Row l-JoAnn Hayes. Standing-David Oder, Nancy Smith, Frances Rad- well, Patricia Deenis, Jared Eshelman, James Cushman, Shirley Orr, Betty Oatman, John McDonald, Judith Linebaugh. seven wins and one loss lost a run-off debate for first place to Dayton Fairmont at the N.F.L. The climax of the season came when the team of Orr, Radwell, Cushman, and McDonald won the Ohio High School Class A Debate Championship at the Ohio State University on March 20. In the final rounds Newark defeated Jack- son, Massilon, and Middletown high schools to win the championship. This team will now represent Newark High School and the State of Ohio at the Na- tional Speech Tournament to be held at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, from June 22 through 25. During the year the debaters pre- sented two radio programs on It's High Time. Patricia Deenis, Judith Linebaugh, John McDonald, and James Cushman presented the senior debate assembly on February 6. McDonald and Cushman both appeared on the television pro- gram Youth Has lts Say over WTVN during the year. Mrs. Eleanor Barrick was coach the first semester, Mr. T. Edwyn Dickerson, the second.
