The 1948 Prize Awards During the amiual commencement at VVhite Field Stadium on the eve- ning of June 3, 1948, the traditional custom of presenting awards to out- standing students in the senior class was repeated. Amy Louise Henzy was the recipi- ent of four awards. She received the Wfilliarn E. and Annie S. Miller Prize in English, an award of twenty-five dollars in cash, the French Prize, a gift of French classics, the Soroptim- ist Award, a prize of twenty-five dol- lars and a gold pin, and a scholarship to Capital University. Sarah Jane Beck received five awards. She obtained the Latin Medal, awarded by Zeta Chapter, Denison University, of Eta Sigma Phi, the Theodore Roosevelt History Prize, the Leland Baxter, Ir., Award fo r outstanding achievement in journalism, a gift of tvventy-five dol- lars, the Harris Scholarship, tuition for one year to Miami University, and a scholarship to Capital University. Richard Eugene Retherford re- ceived the Athletic Award for out- standing performance in athletics and the Roger Sedgwick Award for ex- cellence in basketball. A new award for the boy ranking highest in the industrial arts program -selection being determined by the boyls attitude, personality, scholarship, high moral character, and leadership- -was given to Benton Clay Hitchcock Twenty-Eight by the Licking County Twins Club. The Charles H. Spencer Scholarship Award was presented to David Eu- gene Chaney and Donald Merle Rob- erts. This scholarship entitles each boy to one thousand dollars over a four-year period, the money to be distributed in allotments of two hun- dred and fifty dollars each year. The award is based up o n scholarly achievement and good moral char- acter. lt is to be given every four years. David Eugene Chaney also was presented the Harvard History Prize, a book gift. F lorangela Del Cecato and Beatrice Louise Mclnturf received the Com- mercial Award, a gift in cash of 'ten dollars to each. Letha Jean Dyer was awarded the Florence M. King Trophy for excel- lence in dramatics. A scholarship to Miami University which bestows upon the winner tui- tion for three years was presented to Kenneth Vernon McCreary. John Cerald Crillith Il was awarded the Harvard Cup, which entitles the winner to partial tuition to Harvard University. National Forensic Awards were giv- en to Donald Merle Roberts, Emo- gene Lou Shomaker, David Eugene Chaney, Ruth La Verne Dowler, Har- ry Martin Butler, Ir., and James Her- bert Armbruster. A seventh award, one for excellence in radio announc- ing, was given to Kenneth Vernon Mc- Creary. Scholarships to Capital University, which give one-fourth tuition each of four years of normal college, were presented to Amy Louise Henzy, Flor- angela Del Cecato, Donald Merle Roberts, Ila Suzanne Rivitz, Wilma El- len Richards, Sarah Iane Beck, Cor- nelia Ruth jones, and Joan Irwin Busby.
