Page Eight Foreword Gften in former days, but more rarely today, guests at parties and dances participated in what was known as the circle-round. A caller would direct couples to join hands and circle-roundf, After a few moments of circling, the boys in one direction and the girls in the opposite, the leader would then call out a number which indicated the number of girls a boy had to pass before he reached his partner. The girl who corresponded to the number called in the circle became the partner of the boy dur- ing the dance. In such a manner many strangers inet and later became friends, for guests were encouraged to mingle. All of this explanation leads straight to our theme for 1947. Here at Newark High School students are urged to participate in activities and to make friends. In short, the school is a glorified circle-round. The di- vision pages of this volume show circles in which ap- pear students who are participating in the various ac- tivities of their school life. The Annual Staff, therefore, presents this Reveille of 1947 in the hope that every- one will circle-round, will make many new acquaint- ances, and will form lasting friendships-friendships which will endure after they will have left the friendly circle at Newark High School.
