Burt Manhoff has completed a successful first year as a member of the Physical Education Depart' ment at NCRU. Manhoff took over the leadership of the wrestling and fencing squads nd both teams turned in commendable performan es. Born and raised in Newark, Manhoif won le ers in football and track at Weequahic High School. An Army veteran with two years in the European theatre, he then went to Rutgers N.B. where h earned varsity letters in football and track and play d on the Scarf let Lacrosse team. He competed in wrestling at Montclair Teachers before the war. He earned his Master of Education degree from Rutgers in June, 1948, and is currently studying for his doctorate. FE CIG In a year which produced as many varied scores as possible, the NCRU fencing squad ended the scheduled sea' son with three triumphs, a tie and two lo ses. The foilsmen opened with a Sfl rulaway triumph over Pratt Institute, and paradoxically closed with a 7f2 drubbing at the hands of Drew University. Betwe an these two about face meets were sandwiched a victory arid a tie with Mont' clair State Teachers, a loss to NCE a d a win over the Montclair YMCA. The tie with MST was disappointing since the NCRU squad held a 7f2 edge a, one time. Fencing for Newark were Anthony Villane, Paul Argiriou, Mel Strauss, A1 Bromfield nd Lee Bernstein. U psala wlm TL1 G Although the NCRU wrestling squad ended the 1949f 50 season with a record of one win and four defeats including a loss to the Newark Y in an exhibition match, they made a good showing considering the caliber of their opposition. In their opening match of the season the Bombers were defeated 3.8f5 by Brooklyn Polytec, one of the best teams in the Metropolitan Area. Agressive Tony Villane scored NCRU's lone five points by pinning his opponent. The second meet was a 27f12 loss to Adelphia. Freshman'Dave Hess and veteran, Sol jarmell, scored pins for NCRU and Charley Colmenero fought to a draw to account for the 12 points for Rutgers. The next week NCRU fell victim to a 38fO shutout at the hands of the Long Island Agricultural College. An exhibition match against the Newark Y resulted in a 21f3 loss for the Newark squad. John Zoppi scored only 3 points by a decision over his opponent. In the final match of the season a very improved wrestling squad scored their Hrst win by defeating Upsala 3Of1O. Tony Villane 120, Sol Jarmell 155, and john Zoppi 155, were the leading men on the squad. Other members were Charley Colmenero 128, Sandy Pearlman 135, Ed Rollins 135, Dave Hess 145, Bob Halsay 165, Art Kogan 175, Sandy Morton 175, and heavy weights Mal Cohen, KNEELING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Larry Wolfe, Dave Hess, Sandy Perlman, Tony Villane, Charlie Colmenero, Bob Ventura, John Zoppi, Sandy Morton.
