Whether it is the angle of a rebound on the court or a right triangle on the blackboard, Morton! Hellman, coach of the tennis' team is right at home. Although he is a full time instructor of mathematics, Mr. Hellman has found time each Spring to give lessons to the NCRU netmen. Coach Hellman has been acquainted with the court game for a long time. He began as a high school player. Later, while attending the City Col' lege of New York, competition against spirited opposition provided additional experience for him. This past season at NCRU was the fourth for the ,genial mathematician. I47- NN I With four of last year's regulars gone, the Tennis Team faced the problem of rebuilding for the 1950 season as the Encore went to press. Cal Hurd, Sid Schneider, and Walt Perry, were the only proven netmen to return from the 1949 squad. The eightfmatch schedule begins on April 11th at St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia and will close against NCE on May 12th. TENNIS SCHEDULE - 1950 April 11 ............................. The jayvees had an overall record of 7 wins and 10 first 9 encounters but a 4 game winning streak near the end of the schedule made it a more respectable season. KNEELING, LEFT TO R I G H T : Howard Hollander, Lou Azaroif, Jack Connell, Joe Crisali, Alex Beatrice, Walter. Silver. STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: William D e C a rl o, Bernie Cohen, Joe Ferguson, Leo Wallerius, Robert Viventi, Dick Scrib-' ner, Burt Kaplan, Richard Dodenhoif, Coach George Cukro. This past season was one of Coach George Cukro's most successful since coming to NCRU three years ago. After developing a promising CrossfCountry squad in the fall, he took up his duties as J.V. Basketball coach and directed the squad to a highly satisfying season. After graduation from'Mount Union College, where he starred in football, Cukro attended Columbia University where he received his MA degree. He acquired his coaching experience at the Quantico Marine Post School, Columbia University, and Georgia Teachers' College. BA KETBALL A bright future looms ahead for future NCRU varsity teams if this year's jayvee record can be used as an Coach George Cukro's jayvee squad consisted almost entirely of freshman. Sophomore Leo Wallerius was the only upper classman on the 14 man squad. This factor alone has varsity Coach Hank Bodner looking to the jayvees for 31 ..... losses for the 49 '50 season, but a further look into the 49 record book proves dehnitely that the little Bombers were 49 much better than their record indicated. Of their 10 losses, 34 the jayvees lost 6 of them by 5 points or less with a 66f65 56 defeat by Panzer victory the closest. 55 The jayvees got off to a slow start by losing 7 of their 65 55 The abilities of the jayvee mainstays was proven in 63 the latter part of the season when Tex Ferguson, topfscorer 50 Joe Crisoii 1178 pointsj, Richard Scribner and Lew Azaroff 49 , , , moved up to the Varsity for three big games and each gave 36, . . . a good account of himself. , 50 . . .
