Every year, a group of dedicated people are willing to volunteer their time and effort to make that year’s yearbook the best they can. These people make up the yearbook staff. With the help of our advisor, Mr. Doyle, the yearbook staff was able to come up with a theme. After a considerable amount of thought, the yearbook staff decided upon the theme “gameboards” for the 1986-87 ARCADIAN. As a result, a gameboard was assigned to the cover and each section for unification. This year we tried a new idea to design a cover. Both the front and back of the cover were used for uniqueness. A special thanks to our artist Chris Kelley who designed and drew the cover. The yearbook staff hopes that this year’s ARCADIAN will be the best possible. ENJOY! Tcllicr The Class of 1987 would like to dedicate this year’s Arcadian to a teacher who is truly dedicated to the Senior classes of Newark Senior High School. This teacher is Eileen Healy. Mrs. Healy has been leaching at Newark Senior High for ten years. She teaches business courses which include Typing, Business Management and Marketing. She not only spends time helping to run the school store but is also a very valuable asset and friend to every member of the Senior class. She is the advisor to the Senior Advisory Council; helps organize magazine sales, plans for the Senior Trip, the Senior Dinner Dance, and Graduation. Mrs. Healy enjoys all sports and has coached cheerleading and tennis teams in previous years. She attended Bolivar High School in Bolivar, New York. Then went on to Alfred Tech for two years and finished her education at SUNY Albany in 1977. Mrs. Healy is not only a fine teacher, but a friend to every senior class member at Newark. Many students look forward to their senior year and Mrs. Healy makes it all the more special. Thank you Mrs. Healy for making our Senior year the best year of High School. Yvonne M. Always with many friends by her side. She made it through the times of pain — Leaving us with many memories that will always remain. Memories of her smiles, laughter, and her clownin’ around — In Cheryl, confidence and joy could always be found. Each of us has been touched by her kindness. She brought smiles to each and every one of us. It seems like there should be so much more for us to offer because she did so much for us. She was one we depended on and could always trust. Without her, things have changed, but our friend would not want us to continue our sorrow. Just remember Cheryl with a smile today — and tomorrow. For now let’s take a few moments for her by bowing our heads: Cheryl, This is one of the many moments in which you are thought of. We all hope you have found happiness in the world up above. You are greatly missed — for you have touched us all in a special way. Without you things aren’t the same, but memories of you will always remain. by, Camala Lindner 8 Another year almost over! Now as the year comes to a close, we must move on, but not without memories. In September of 1983 we started our high school days led by our officers; Shawn DeCook. Heather Simpson, and Kim Straubing. We replaced the traditional Slave A Day with Rent-A-Freshman Day. Our sophomore year we elected Shawn DeCook, Heather Simpson, and Sue Torrell to represent our class. We survived, yet, another year. Our junior year arrived and we were finally upperclassmen. Our officers that year were Tim Crowley, Jennifer Jaquin, and Sue Torrell. We had a successful fruit sale. The theme of the 1986 prom was “In The Air Tonight” and it was quite an evening. Lauri Stevens was crowned Prom Princess. All these events made the year of PSAT's, SAT’s, and ACT's bearable. Finally . . . our senior year arrived. To lead our profitable magazine sales were our officers; Andy Crowe, Jennifer Jaquin, Tara Lemmon, and Gladys Rojas. Wendy Lannon was selected Homecoming Queen 1986. In January we held a Senior Snowball at the Country Club, the senior trip is May. Then ... at last, we will graduate on June 19, 1987. As we leave NHS and go into the world, we will always have memories of the best days of our lives. £ ST MICHAEL SCHOOL Newark, N Y. 1974-1975 Sr. Joyce, Principal Mrs. Rooker-Mrs. Lauster-Mrs. Priebe Kdg.-l BRB F v, r? I’m living with the Bryant family. They have been very nice to me and I'm very thankful to them. America is quite different from what I thought before I came over here. I’ve found many things that are different and strange, but I’m surprised how much the same we are. This has been a year full of experiences of all kinds and I will never forget it. Love Ann-Elisabeth Hi everybody. I’m Pauline Hofhuis and I’m from Holland. I’m spending my year here in Newark with the Roberts, and, of course. I’m going to N.H.S. I want to thank all of my friends here, in and out, of school. I have enjoyed learning about the American culture, it was very different than I expected it to be. I hope some of you will be able to experience a different culture loo, by visiting Europe. Thanks again, everybody, and I hope to see all of you again. Love Pauline Hi. My name is Jesper Skjellerup. 1 am from Denmark and I am here as an exchange student. Denmark is one of the smallest countries in Europe. Denmark is about the same size as New York State and the population is approximately five million. I just want to say thank you to everybody for being so friendly to me when I first came here. I also want to thank the Newark Rotary Club, Frederiva Rotary Club (the rotary club in my hometown) and not to forget my parents who made this Exchange Year possible for me. For all you guys out there, if you ever get the chance to become an Exchange Student, do not hesitate, because it is a chance of a lifetime and I am really enjoying myself. Last summer, I had the opportunity to visit a foreign country and actually become a part of its culture. I spent four weeks in Kassel, West Germany with Andrea Oetzel, the German exchange student that stayed with me in April. While in Germany, I became a member of the Oetzel family — attending school with Andrea, shopping in Kassel, visiting the nearby salt mines, and taking many other sight-seeing trips. I learned first hand about the cultural differences and similarities between our two countries. It was especially startling to realize Kassel’s close proximity to the communist government in East Germany, when we take for granted our good ’ole American democracy here in the United Stales. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Germany and look forward to hosting a German exchange student again this year. It is a speech entitled “Dig Into the World” given by Alan Alda at his daughter’s college graduation. It means a lot to those of us who have been taught by Mrs. Biddle, who read it to us as her gift to our class. The best things said come last. People will talk for hours saying nothing much and then linger at the door with words that come with a rush from the heart. We are all gathered at a doorway today. We linger there with our hand on the knob chattering away like Polonius to Laertes. Now remember, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be . . .” and don’t forget, “This above all: To thine own self by true . . .” But the very best things said often slip out completely unheralded, preceded by, “Oh by the way.” In real life when Polonius had finished giving all that fatherly advice to his son — who probably wasn’t paying much attention anyway — he must have said, “Oh, by the way, if you get into any trouble, don’t forget you can always call me at the office.” As we stand in the doorway today, these are my parting words to my daughter. There are so many things I want to tell you. Eve. The first thing is: don’t be scared. You’re being flung into a world that’s running about as smoothly as a car with square wheels. It’s okay to be uncertain. You’re an adult in a time when the leaders of the world are behaving like children. Where the central image of the day is a terrorist one: humane concerns inhumanely expressed. And the only response to this is impotent fury. If you weren’t a little uncertain. I’d be nervous for you. Adulthood has come upon you and you’re not all that sure you’re ready for it. I think that sometimes I’m not ready for adulthood either — yours or mine. The day before yesterday you were a baby. I was afraid to hold you because you seemed so fragile. Yesterday, all I could feel was helplessness when you broke your nine-year-old arm. Only this morning you were a teenager. As I get older, the only thing that speeds up is time. But if time is a thief, time also leaves something in exchange: experience. And with experience, at least in your own work you will be sure. Love your work. If you always put your heart into everything you do, you really can’t lose. Whether you wind up making a lot of money or not, you will have had a wonderful time, and no one will ever be able to lake that away from you. I want to squeeze things great and small into this lingering goodbye. I want to tell you to keep laughing. You gurgle when you laugh. Be sure to gurgle three times a day for your own well-being. And if you can get other people to join you in your laughter, you may help keep this shaky boat afloat. When people are laughing, they’re generally not killing one another. I have this helpless urge to pass on maxims to you, things that will see you through. But even the Golden Rule doesn’t seem adequate to pass on to a daughter. There should be something added to it. Here’s my Golden Rule for a tarnished age: Be fair with others, but then keep after them until they’re fair with you. It’s a complex world. I hope you’ll learn to make distinctions. A peach is not its fuzz, a toad is not its warts, a person is not his or her crankiness. If we can make distinctions, we can be tolerant, and we can get to the heart of our problems instead of wrestling endlessly with their gross exteriors. Once you make a habit of making distinctions, you’ll begin challenging your own assumptions. Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in. If you challenge your own, you won’t be so quick to accept the unchallenged assumptions of others. You’ll be a lot less likely to be caught up in bias or prejudice, or be influenced by people who ask you to hand over your brains your soul or money because they have everything all figured out for you. Be as smart as you can, but remember that it’s always belter to be wise than to be smart. And don’t be upset that it takes a long, long lime to find wisdom. Like a rare virus, wisdom tends to break out at unexpected times, and it’s mosdy people with compassion and understanding who are susceptible to it. The door is inching a little closer toward the latch and I still haven’t said it. Let me dig a little deeper. Life is absurd and meaningless — unless you bring meaning to it, unless you make something of it. It is up to us to create our own existence. 180 No mailer how loving or loved we are, it eventually occurs to most of us that deep down inside, we’re all alone. When the moment comes for you to wrestle with that cold loneliness, which is every person's private monster, I want you to face the damn thing. I want you to see it for what it is and win. When I was in college, 25 years ago, the philosophy of existentialism was very popular. We all talked about nothingness; but we move into a world of effort and endeavor. Now no one talks about nothingness; but the world itself is filled with it. Whenever that sense of absurdity hits you, I want you to be ready. It will have a hard time getting hold of you if you’re already in motion. You can use the skills of your profession and other skills you have learned here, dig into the world and push it into better shape. For one thing, you can try to clean the air and water. Or you can try to make the justice system work, too. You can bring the day a little closer when the rich and privileged have to live by the same standards as the poor and the outcast. You can try to put an end to organized crime — that happy family whose main objective is to convince us they don’t exist while they destroy a generation with drugs and suck the life from our economy. You can try to find out why people of every country and religion have at one time or another found it so easy to make other people suffer. (If you really want to grapple with absurdity, try understanding how people can be capable of both nurture and torture; can worry and fret about a little girl caught in a mine shaft, yet destroy a village and everyone in it with hardly the blink of an eye.) You can try to stop the next war now, before it starts, to keep old men from sending children away to die. And while you’re doing all of that, remember that every right you have as a woman was won for you by women fighting hard. There are little girls being bom right now who won’t have the same rights as you do unless you act to maintain and extend the range of equality. The nourishing stew of civilized life doesn’t keep bubbling on its own. Put something back in the pot for the people in line behind you. There’s plenty to keep you busy for the rest of your life. I can’t promise this will ever completely reduce that sense of absurdity, but it may get it down to a manageable level. It will allow you once in a while to bask in the feeling that, all in all, things do seem to be moving forward. I can see your brow knitting in that way that I love. That crinkle between your eyebrows that signals your doubt and skepticism. Why — on a day of such excitement and hope — should I be talking of absurdity and nothingness? Because I want you to focus that hope and level that excitement into coherent rays that will strike like a laser at the targets of our discontent. I want you to be potent; to do good when you can, and to hold your wit and your intelligence like a shield against other people’s wantonness. And above all, to laugh and enjoy yourself in a life of your own choosing and in a world of your own making. I want you to be strong and aggressive and tough and resilient and full of feeling. I want you to be everything that’s you, deep at the center of your being. I want you to have chutzpah. Nothing important was every accomplished without chutzpah. Columbus had chutzpah. The signers of the Declaration of Independence had chutzpah. Laugh at yourself, but don’t ever aim your doubt at yourself. Be bold. When you embark for strange places, don’t leave any of yourself safely on shore. Have the nerve to go into unexplored territory. Be brave enough to live life creatively. The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can’t get there by bus, only by hard work and risk and by not quite knowing what you’re doing. What you’ll discover will be yourself. Well, those are my parting words as today’s door closes softly between us. So long, be happy . . . Oh, by the way, I love you. 181 ; SMO-BJklalii Good-bye to the mornings of seeing maroon and grey. The future holds life in a brand new way. Paths diverge, new people to meet. New territory to discover, no more cruisin’ Main Street. All these years the CLASS OF ’87’ has waited. So long each and every one of us has anticipated. The time for all of our dreams to come true. We are also beginning our independence too. Even though we are leaving Newark Sr. High behind. We will always remember NHS is one of a kind. It’s where we grew up and learned so much. Without it we might feel a little out of touch. Although this is a great moment it is very sad. We’re parting after all those good times we had. Selling fruit and magazines weren’t exactly the best. But who will forget the parties and all the rest? So, as we say good-bye. Hug one another and even cry, For it may be a while before we see one another, As we separate and look to find what there is to discover. — CAMALA — ‘87’ 184
